  BROOK’S LATE WINNER SENDS CANADA RED TO U17 SEMIFINALS

  FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Josh Brook (Roblin, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) hammered in a point shot for the game-winning goal with just 2:03 to go, leading Canada Red to a 3-2 quarter-final win over Canada Black and a spot in the semifinals.

  After Canadian teams were shut out of the semifinals last year in the debut of the six-team format, Red will be part of the final four; it’ll meet the winner of the Czech Republic-Russia quarter-final on Friday.

  With the teams playing four-on-four in the late stages of the third period, Brook took a feed from Maxime Comtois (Ste-Martine, Que./Victoriaville, QMJHL) and got his hard shot through traffic and past Black goaltender Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael’s, OJHL).

  Joël Teasdale (Beloeil, Que./Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) and Jack Studnicka (Tecumseh, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) also scored for Red.

  It was Black who came out with jump, taking an early lead when Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Halifax, QMJHL) beat Red goaltender Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) along the ice after a pretty cross-ice feed from Joseph Veleno (Kirkland, Que./Saint John, QMJHL) just 8:15 in.

  That goal would stand up through the first 40 minutes thanks to DiPietro and McGrath, who weren’t busy – shots were just 15-12 Red after two periods – but made the big saves when called upon.

  Red needed seven minutes of the third to pull even; Teasdale drove the puck hard to the net off the right wing and slipped the puck through the legs of McGrath to tie the game and excite what was a pro-Red crowd at North Peace Arena.

  Studnicka gave Red its first lead just 2:42 after the Teasdale goal, roofing the rebound of a Comtois shot, but Veleno snapped a quick shot off the far post and past DiPietro to tie the game less than four minutes later.

  Red carried the play in the third period and outshot Black 11-5 in the decisive final frame. Overall, Red held a 26-17 advantage.

  The loss means Black will play in the seventh-place game on Friday; the time, location and opponent for that game will be decided after the two late quarter-finals are played on Thursday night.

  LE BUT GAGNANT DE BROOK EN FIN DE MATCH ENVOIE CANADA ROUGES EN DEMI-FINALE DU DÉFI MONDIAL

  FORT ST. JOHN, C.-B. – Le tir de la pointe foudroyant de Josh Brook (Roblin, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) avec 2 min 3 s à jouer s’est avéré le but gagnant, donnant à Canada Rouges la victoire 3-2 en quart de finale contre Canada Noirs et un billet pour la demi-finale.

  Après avoir vu les équipes canadiennes être exclues des demi-finales l’année dernière au lancement de la formule à six équipes, Canada Rouges fera partie des quatre équipes finalistes. Vendredi, l’équipe affrontera la gagnante du quart de finale entre la République tchèque et la Russie.

  Tandis que les équipes évoluaient à quatre contre quatre en fin de troisième période, Brook a accepté une remise de Maxime Comtois (Ste-Martine, Qc/Victoriaville, LHJMQ), et son tir puissant a traversé la mêlée et trompé la vigilance du gardien de but Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael’s, OJHL).

  Joël Teasdale (Belœil, Qc/Blainville-Boisbriand, LHJMQ) et Jack Studnicka (Tecumseh, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) ont marqué les autres buts de Canada Rouges.

  Canada Noirs a amorcé le match en force, prenant rapidement l’avance lorsqu’Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Qc/Halifax, LHJMQ) a battu le gardien de but de Canada Rouges Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) au ras de la glace à la suite d’une belle passe transversale de Joseph Veleno (Kirkland, Qc/Saint John, LHJMQ) après seulement 8 min 15 s de jeu.

  Ce but a été le seul à être inscrit au cours des 40 premières minutes de jeu en raison du travail de DiPietro et de McGrath, qui ont été peu sollicités – les tirs au but étaient de 15-12 en faveur de Canada Rouges après deux périodes –, mais qui ont su faire les arrêts clés.

  Canada Rouges a mis sept minutes en troisième période pour créer l’égalité. Teasdale a foncé au filet avec la rondelle depuis l’aile droite et a glissé celle-ci entre les jambières de McGrath pour niveler la marque et soulever la foule qui était favorable à la cause de Canada Rouges à l’aréna North Peace.

  Studnicka a donné une première avance à Canada Rouges seulement 2 min 42 s après le but de Teasdale lorsqu’il a placé la rondelle dans la lucarne sur le retour du lancer de Comtois, mais, moins de quatre minutes plus tard, Veleno a décoché un tir rapide qui a frappé le poteau du côté éloigné avant de terminer sa course derrière DiPietro pour ramener les équipes à la case départ.

  Canada Rouges a imposé le rythme en troisième période et a dominé Canada Noirs 11-5 au chapitre des tirs au but pendant ce dernier engagement. Au total, Canada Rouges a eu l’avantage avec 26 tirs au but contre 17 pour l’équipe perdante.

  La défaite de Canada Noirs signifie que l’équipe disputera le match pour la septième position vendredi. L’heure, le lieu et l’adversaire seront déterminés après les deux derniers quarts de finale qui seront joués en soirée jeudi.
