  RUSSIA SKATES THROUGH TO U17 SEMIS WITH ROMP OVER CZECHS

  DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Alexey Lipanov and Yaroslav Alekseev each scored a pair of goals and Andrei Svechnikov picked up two assists for Russia as it rolled to a 6-1 win over the Czech Republic in quarter-final action Thursday at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  The Russians will head back to Fort. St. John to face Canada Red in the first semifinal on Friday night (6 p.m. MT). The Canadians had the edge in the preliminary round meeting, winning 4-3 in overtime.

  The Czechs seemed to be a step behind from the first drop of the puck, they continued to struggle with the man advantage and had their share of bad luck, with two goals waved off.

  Lipanov netted the Russians’ first goal at 6:43, picking up a loose puck in the middle of the ice before beating Czech netminder Jakub Skarek with an unassisted effort.

  The Czechs replied three minutes later when Filip Zadina set up Martin Necas for a one-timer that beat Russian goaltender Maxim Zhukov, but Alekseev, off a feed from Svechnikov, restored the Russians’ lead a mere 14 seconds later.

  Both teams had their chances in a first period that included 19 shots on goal – 11-8 in favour of the Czechs.

  A close-checking second period included just a single goal, off the stick of Lipanov; the Russian carried the puck up the left side before snapping a wrist shot past Skarek to double the lead.

  Dmitri Samorukov got a lucky bounce when his shot hit the glass behind Skarek before bouncing off the Czech goaltender and in, pushing the advantage to 4-1 just 5:49 into the third period.

  The Russians added two more in the final minutes; Ivan Chekhovich had a tap-in at the side of the Czech net after Skarek stopped Aleksander Alexeev, and Alekseev buried a Svechnikov rebound just 35 seconds after that to provide the final margin of victory.

  Russia finished with a 33-26 advantage in shots on goal.

  The loss, coupled with losses by the United States and Finland, means the Czechs will play for seventh place on Friday afternoon; they’ll be back on the ice in Dawson Creek to take on Canada Black (2:30 p.m. MT).

  DAWSON CREEK, C.-B. – Alexey Lipanov et Yaroslav Alekseev ont inscrit deux buts chacun, Andrei Svechnikov a obtenu deux aides, et les Russes ont écrasé la République tchèque 6-1 en quart de finale jeudi au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015.

  Les Russes retourneront à Fort. St. John pour se mesurer à Canada Rouges dans la première demi-finale vendredi soir (18 h HR). Les Canadiens ont eu l’avantage dans leur affrontement en ronde préliminaire, l’emportant 4-3 en prolongation.

  Les Tchèques ont semblé manquer de rythme dès la première mise au jeu. Leurs difficultés se sont poursuivies en avantage numérique, et ils ont joué de malchance en se voyant refuser deux buts.

  Lipanov a ouvert la marque pour les Russes à 6 min 43 s lorsqu’il a récupéré une rondelle libre au centre de la glace, pour ensuite battre le gardien de but tchèque Jakub Skarek à l’aide d’un bel effort individuel.

  Les Tchèques ont répliqué trois minutes plus tard lorsque Filip Zadina a permis à Martin Necas de décocher un tir sur réception qui a échappé au gardien de but russe Maxim Zhukov, mais Alekseev a redonné l’avance aux Russes sur une passe de Svechnikov seulement 14 secondes plus tard.

  Les deux équipes ont obtenu des chances de marquer en première période. Elles ont totalisé 19 tirs au but – soit 11-8 en faveur des Tchèques.

  Une période médiane où les équipes se sont surveillées de près n’a donné lieu qu’à un seul but, inscrit par Lipanov. Le Russe a transporté la rondelle du côté gauche avant de décocher un tir du poignet battant Skarek pour doubler l’avance de son équipe.

  Dmitri Samorukov a profité d’un bond chanceux lorsque son tir a frappé la baie vitrée derrière Skarek avant de rebondir sur le gardien tchèque et de terminer sa course dans le filet, portant la marque à 4-1 à 5 min 49 s seulement de la troisième période.

  Les Russes ont ajouté deux autres buts pendant les dernières minutes. Ivan Chekhovich n’a eu qu’à pousser la rondelle dans le filet après que Skarek ait arrêté un tir d’Aleksander Alexeev, et Alekseev a saisi le retour du lancer de Svechnikov seulement 35 secondes plus tard pour creuser une dernière fois l’écart assurant la victoire aux Russes.

  Au total, la Russie a dominé 33-26 au chapitre des tirs au but.

  Pour les Tchèques, cette défaite, combinée à celles contre les États-Unis et la Finlande, signifie qu’ils joueront pour la septième position vendredi après-midi. Ils seront de retour à l’aréna de Dawson Creek pour affronter Canada Noirs (14 h 30 HR).
