  ONTARIO BLUE SURVIVES LATE SCARE, WINS BRONZE

  HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – With 3:07 to play in the third period, Ontario Blue had a three-goal lead and looked well on its way to winning the bronze medal at the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

  With 1:27 to play that lead was down to one and a celebratory mood among the partisan crowd had suddenly turned tense.

  But over a frenzied final minute that included the team hitting the post of an empty British Columbia net, Ontario Blue hung on to win its first bronze medal in tournament history.

  Victoria Klimek (Orangeville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL), Meaghan Hector (Georgetown, Ont./Oakville, PWHL), Celine Frappier (Tecumseh, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) and Brianna Gaffney (Tamworth, Ont./Kingston, PWHL) scored the Ontario Blue goals.

  Nicole Cece (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) made 20 saves in the win.

  Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, BCMAAA) scored twice for British Columbia, with Alexandra Rempe (Penticton, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) adding the third.

  Alex Gulstene (North Vancouver, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) started in net, facing 15 shots before being replaced by Morgan Skinner (Victoria, B.C./Pacific, JWHL) with about nine minutes to go in the third.

  Klimek opened the scoring with one of the prettiest goals the tournament saw this week. She intercepted the puck along the side boards, skated along the bottom of the face-off circle and roofed a backhand far side over the goalie’s blocker.

  Ontario Blue looked like it would have the early momentum in the second period with a power play only 51 seconds in. Instead, Potomak gained control of puck in the B.C. zone, skated out from her own blue line, deked a defender in the Ontario Blue high slot and slid the puck beneath Cece.

  Two goals 2:30 apart in the latter half of the period gave Ontario Blue the momentum back.  First, Hector’s wrist shot from the point cleanly beat Gulstene. Then, Frappier intercepted a pass in the offensive zone, took a few strides into the low slot and shot high glove side.

  When Gaffney redirected in a shot by Cynthia Cavanagh (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto Leaside, PWHL) midway through the third, the story seemed to be written.

  But B.C. wasn’t going down without a fight. Skinner was first pulled with 5:21 to go. An Ontario Blue penalty let B.C. play six-on-four. Potomak snuck in behind everyone to the front of the crease, where she was free to put a rebound into an open net. Rempe emerged from bodies of chaos in front to score from the low slot 1:40 later.

  From there, Ontario Blue hunkered down and never let British Columbia seriously threaten in the offensive zone again.

  ONTARIO BLEU A EU CHAUD EN FIN DE MATCH, MAIS REMPORTE LE BRONZE

  HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Alors qu’il restait 3 min 7 s à la troisième période, Ontario Bleu profitait d’une avance de trois buts et semblait sur le point de remporter la médaille de bronze au Championnat national féminin des moins de 18 ans 2015.

  Lorsqu’il restait 1 min 27 s au chronomètre, cette avance avait été réduite à un seul but et l’ambiance festive qui régnait dans les gradins s’est soudainement estompée.

  Au cours d’une dernière minute endiablée, où l’équipe a heurté un poteau du filet désert de la Colombie-Britannique, Ontario Bleu a tenu bon pour remporter sa première médaille de bronze de l’histoire du tournoi.

  Alex Gulstene (North Vancouver, C.-B./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) a amorcé le match devant le filet britannocolombien, affrontant 15 tirs avant d’être remplacée par Morgan Skinner (Victoria, C.-B./Pacific, JWHL) à environ neuf minutes de la fin du temps réglementaire.  

  Klimek a ouvert la marque au moyen d’un des plus beaux buts de la semaine. Elle a intercepté la rondelle le long de la bande, a contourné le bas du cercle de mise au jeu et a décoché un tir du revers du côté éloigné, par-dessus le bloqueur de la gardienne.  

  Ontario Bleu aurait bien aimé se donner un élan pendant une supériorité numérique survenue après seulement 51 secondes de jeu en deuxième période, mais Potomak a pris le contrôle de la rondelle dans la zone de la Colombie-Britannique, s’est avancée en zone adverse, a déjoué une joueuse à la défensive dans le haut de la zone privilégiée et a glissé la rondelle sous Cece.

  Deux buts à 2 min 30 s d’intervalle au cours de la deuxième moitié de la période médiane ont redonné l’avance à Ontario Bleu. Hector a d’abord fait mouche d’un tir du poignet de la pointe qui a trompé la vigilance de Gulstene et ensuite, Frappier a intercepté une passe en zone offensive avant de s’avancer dans le bas de la zone privilégiée et de décocher un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet du côté de la mitaine. 

  Lorsque Gaffney a compté en déviant un tir de Cynthia Cavanagh (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto Leaside, PWHL) au milieu du dernier tiers, l’issue du match semblait scellée.

  Mais la Colombie-Britannique n’avait nullement l’intention de baisser les bras. Skinner a été retirée pour la première fois alors qu’il restait 5 min 21 s à jouer. Une punition imposée à Ontario Bleu a permis à la Colombie-Britannique de jouer à six contre quatre. Potomak s’est faufilée derrière l’adversaire jusqu’à l’avant de l’enceinte où elle a pu s’emparer d’un rebond et loger la rondelle dans l’espace béant. Rempe s’est ensuite extirpée d’une mêlée devant le filet pour faire mouche d’un tir bas 1 min 40 s plus tard.   

  Après cela, Ontario Bleu a resserré son jeu défensif sans jamais laisser la Colombie-Britannique développer une menace sérieuse en zone offensive.
