  WESTLAKE’S FIVE POINTS LEAD CANADA TO OPENING WIN IN TURIN

  TURIN, Italy – Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) led the way with five points as Canada’s National Sledge Team opened the International Ice Sledge Hockey Tournament with a bang on Monday, blanking Korea 8-0.

  Westlake gave Canada a 2-0 lead late in the first period, then set up five of the last six goals, including all three from Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.), who had his second hat trick in three days against the Koreans after scoring three times in a 7-1 pre-tournament win on Saturday.

  Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) and Tyler McGregor (Forest, Ont.) added a goal and an assist each for the Canadians, while Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) and Rob Armstrong (Mississauga, Ont.) did the rest of the scoring.

  Armstrong’s goal was his first with the national team, and first point.

  Dominic Larocque (Quebec City, Que.) earned the shutout in the Canadian goal.

  “The game was a complete 15-man effort,” Armstrong said after the game. “As a group I thought we all competed, and that is what you need in your first game of a tournament.”

  Canada was rewarded for its hard work early, with Bridges opening the scoring off a set-up from Dominic Cozzolino (Mississauga, Ont.) with just 52 seconds off the clock.

  Westlake made it a two-goal advantage on the power play at 13:48 from Dixon and McGregor, sending the Canadians to the dressing room up by a pair after the opening 15 minutes.

  "Korea came at us pretty hard in the first period,” said Canadian head coach Ken Babey. “I thought we made great adjustments with the puck that helped us have better second and third periods. It was a good first game for our team."

  Bowden pushed the lead to 3-0 just 1:35 into the second period, and Armstrong and McGregor added goals before the 10-minute mark of the middle frame.

  Canada continued to press offensively in the third, and Bowden finished off his hat trick with a pair of goals, sandwiched around a Dixon marker with five minutes left.

  The Canadians will try for a 2-0 start Tuesday when they face the host Italians at the Palaghiaccio Tazzoli; the puck drops in Turin at 4 a.m. ET/1 a.m. PT on the first meeting between the teams since the 2013 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship.

  TURIN, Italie – Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) a mené son équipe avec cinq points dans le match d’ouverture de l’équipe nationale sur luge du Canada qui a amorcé le Tournoi international de hockey sur glace sur luge en force lundi, blanchissant la Corée 8-0.

  Westlake a donné une avance de 2-0 au Canada tard en fin de première période, pour ensuite préparer cinq des six derniers buts, dont les trois de Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.), qui a inscrit un deuxième tour du chapeau en trois jours contre la Corée après avoir marqué trois fois dans une victoire de 7-1 en match préparatoire samedi.

  Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) et Tyler McGregor (Forest, Ont.) ont ajouté chacun un but et une mention d’aide pour le Canada, tandis que Billy Bridges (Summerside, Î.-P.-É.) et Rob Armstrong (Mississauga, Ont.) ont inscrit les autres buts.

  Le but d’Armstrong était son premier au sein de l’équipe nationale, de même que son premier point.

  Dominic Larocque (Québec, Qc) a obtenu le blanchissage devant le filet canadien.

  « Ce match est le résultat d’un effort complet par 15 joueurs », a affirmé Armstrong après le match. « Comme groupe, je pense que nous avons tous été compétitifs, et c’est ce qu’on recherche dans le premier match d’un tournoi. »

  Le Canada a vite été récompensé pour son travail acharné lorsque Bridges a ouvert la marque grâce au jeu préparé par Dominic Cozzolino (Mississauga, Ont.) seulement 52 secondes après le début de la rencontre.

  Westlake a doublé l’avance en avantage numérique à 13 min 48 s avec l’aide de Dixon et de McGregor pour permettre aux Canadiens de retraiter au vestiaire avec un avantage de deux buts après la période initiale.

  « La Corée a amorcé le match en force en première période », a dit Ken Babey, entraîneur-chef du Canada. « Je pense que nous avons fait d’excellents ajustements avec la rondelle, ce qui nous a permis de mieux jouer en deuxième et en troisième période. C’était un bon premier match pour notre équipe. »

  Bowden a porté l’avance à 3-0 après seulement 1 min 35 s de jeu en deuxième période, puis Armstrong et McGregor ont enchaîné avec un but chacun dans les 10 premières minutes de cette période.

  Le Canada a continué de s’imposer à l’attaque au dernier engagement, et Bowden a complété son tour du chapeau en inscrivant deux buts, séparés par celui de Dixon à cinq minutes de la fin du match.

  Les Canadiens tenteront de poursuivre leur départ avec une fiche de 2-0 mardi lorsqu’ils affronteront l’Italie, l’équipe hôte, au Palaghiaccio Tazzoli Arana. Cet affrontement à Turin qui débute à 4 h HE/1 h HP marque la première rencontre entre les deux équipe depuis le Championnat mondial de hockey sur luge 2013 du CIP.
