  CZECHS SCORE TWICE IN THREE SECONDS, BEAT SWISS FOR FIFTH PLACE

  COBOURG, Ont. – Lukas Doudera and Pavel Kousal scored just three seconds apart midway through the first period – setting a new tournament record – to help lead the Czech Republic past Switzerland 5-3 on Friday night in the fifth-place game at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge.

  It’s the second fifth-place finish in the last two appearances for the Czechs; they finished fifth in 2013 in Yarmouth, N.S., after sixth-place results in 2011 (Langley, B.C.) and 2012 (Yarmouth).

  Outshot 21-5 in the first period, the Swiss took an early lead when Axel Simic took a pass in the slot and snapped a quick shot past Czech goaltender Dominik Groh at the seven-minute mark.

  Doudera tied the game at 10:44, beating Swiss netminder Philip Wüthrich under the arm from the point, and Kousal took the puck off the ensuing face-off, cut to the net and beat Wüthrich to the far side at 10:47, giving the Czechs the lead for good, and making a little history.

  The goals comfortably bested the old mark of nine seconds between goals, set by Martin Filo and Ondrej Rusnak in Slovakia’s 8-2 quarter-final win over Belarus on Nov. 9, 2006.

  Tomas Smerha added a third goal in the opening frame, tipping in a Daniel Novak point shot at 18:21 to send the Czechs to the intermission with a two-goal advantage.

  The Swiss turned the tables in the second period, outshooting the Czechs 10-4, but Petr Kodytek scored shorthanded just past the 13-minute mark to push the Czech lead to 4-1.

  Lee Roberts got that one back for the Swiss in the final minute of the middle frame, capitalizing on a turnover behind the Czech net and beating Wüthrich through the five-hole to make it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes.

  Switzerland made things interesting late in the third; a centering pass from Kaj Suter deflected off a Czech skate in front and got behind Wüthrich with 6:48 to go, making it a one-goal game.

  But Jiri Karafiat hit the empty net at 18:10, clinching the win for the Czechs.

  After reaching the semifinals in their first three appearances, the Swiss have played in the fifth-place game in consecutive years, and the sixth-place finish is their worst ever at the tournament.

  COBOURG, Ont. – Lukas Doudera et Pavel Kousal ont marqué à seulement trois secondes d’intervalle à mi-chemin au premier tiers, établissant un record du tournoi, pour aider la République tchèque à vaincre la Suisse 5-3 vendredi soir, au match pour la cinquième place du Défi mondial junior A 2015.

  C’est la deuxième fois de suite que les Tchèques terminent à ce rang, ayant fait de même en 2013 à Yarmouth, N.-É., après une sixième position en 2011 (Langley, C.-B.) et en 2012 (Yarmouth).

  Dominés 21-5 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, les Suisses ont pris une avance tôt dans le match quand Axel Simic a accepté une passe dans l’enclave pour décocher un tir vif derrière le cerbère tchèque Dominik Groh à la septième minute.

  Doudera a nivelé la marque à 10 min 44 s, ayant le dessus sur le portier suisse Philip Wüthrich d’un tir de la pointe qui s’est faufilé sous son bras, puis Kousal a saisi la rondelle à la mise au jeu suivante, coupant au filet pour battre Wüthrich du côté éloigné, à 10 min 47 s, permettant aux Tchèques d’établir un record et de ne plus jamais regarder derrière par la suite.

  Cette marque a facilement battu l’ancienne, alors que Martin Filo et Ondrej Rusnak avaient fait vibrer les cordages à neuf secondes d’intervalle dans un gain de 8-2 de la Slovaquie en quart de finale contre le Bélarus, le 9 novembre 2006.

  Tomas Smerha a inscrit un troisième filet dans cette première période, faisant dévier un tir de la pointe de Daniel Novak à 18 min 21 s, permettant aux Tchèques de retraiter au vestiaire avec une priorité de deux buts.

  La Suisse a fait virer le vent de côté au deuxième tiers, bombardant les Tchèques de 10 tirs contre 4, mais Petr Kodytek a marqué en désavantage numérique à la 13e minute de jeu pour pousser l’avance des Tchèques à 4-1.

  Lee Roberts a fait mouche pour les Suisses lors de la dernière minute de la période, profitant d’un revirement derrière le filet adverse pour battre Wüthrich entre les jambières, portant le compte à 4-2 après 40 minutes.  

  La Suisse a rendu les choses intéressantes en fin de match; une passe centrée de Kaj Suter a dévié sur un patin tchèque devant le filet pour se retrouver derrière Wüthrich avec 6 min 48 s à écouler, réduisant l’écart à un but.

  Toutefois, Jiri Karafiat a marqué dans une cage abandonnée à 18 min 10 s, confirmant le gain des Tchèques.

  Après avoir atteint les demi-finales à leurs trois premières présences, les Suisses ont participé au match pour la cinquième place deux fois de suite. Cette sixième position est leur pire résultat à vie au tournoi.
