  CANADA INTO SPENGLER CUP FINAL AFTER WILD SEMIFINAL WIN OVER HOSTS

  DAVOS, Switzerland – Matt Ellison (Duncan, B.C./Dinamo Minsk, KHL) scored twice before setting up Cory Conacher (Burlington, Ont./SC Bern, SUI) for the winner with 3:29 left, sending Canada’s National Men’s Team to the championship game at the 2015 Spengler Cup after a 6-5 semifinal victory over HC Davos on Wednesday.

  Ellison flipped a saucer pass ahead to Conacher, who snapped a quick shot past the blocker of Davos goaltender Leonardo Genoni to put the cap on a back-and-forth game between the long-time rivals.

  It’s the 20th time Canada has advanced to the final since its first appearance in 1984, and the first since winning the tournament in 2012; it had lost in the semifinals to Genève-Servette HC the last two years.

  The Canadians will face HC Lugano or Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, who meet in the second semifinal later Wednesday, in the championship game Thursday (6 a.m. ET/3 a.m. PT on TSN).

  The teams met Monday in the preliminary round finale, a 2-0 win for Canada, but their second meeting in three days, and 39th in tournament history, was much different.

  The hosts jumped out to a quick two-goal lead; Gregory Sciaroni opened the scoring on a Davos power play at 6:16, and Sven Ryder snuck a backhand past Canadian netminder Jeff Glass (Calgary, Alta./Dinamo Minsk, KHL) just 23 seconds later.

  Tom Pyatt (Thunder Bay, Ont,/Genève-Servette HC, SUI) got one back for Canada at 9:25, scoring from in close on a Canadian power play, but Alexandre Picard knocked a rebound past Glass late in the opening frame to make it 3-1 after one period.

  Félicien du Bois extended the HC Davos lead at 6:43 of the second period, blasting a point shot past a screened Glass and chasing the goaltender in favour of Matt Climie (Leduc, Alta./Straubing Tigers, GER), who was added to the Canadian roster on Tuesday.

  James Sheppard (Lower Sackville, N.S./Kloten Flyers, SUI) needed just 22 seconds after the du Bois goal to get the comeback started, tapping in the 4-2 marker after hard work by Dan Paille (Welland, Ont./Rockford, AHL), and Ellison scored at 9:33 and 18:37 to bring the Canadians all the way back and send the game to the intermission tied 4-4.

  The hosts took the lead again 7:33 into the third when Perttu Lindgren streaked down the right wing and went far-side on Climie, but Alexandre Giroux (Quebec City, Que./HC Ambri-Piotta, SUI) tied the game for Canada at 15:26, setting up Conacher’s winner just 65 seconds later.

  Canada outshot HC Davos 45-28, including 35-17 in the final 40 minutes.

  DAVOS, Suisse – Matt Ellison (Duncan, C.-B./Dinamo de Minsk, KHL) a marqué deux fois, en plus de préparer le but gagnant de Cory Conacher (Burlington, Ont./SC de Berne, SUI) avec 3 min 29 s à jouer, et l’équipe nationale masculine du Canada ira en finale de la Coupe Spengler 2015 grâce à une victoire de 6-5 contre le HC de Davos en demi-finale mercredi.

  Ellison a dirigé une passe levée vers l’avant à Conacher, dont le tir rapide du côté du bloqueur de Leonardo Genoni, le gardien de but de Davos, s’est avéré le point final d’un match pendant lequel les deux rivaux de longue date se sont constamment donné la riposte.

  Il s’agit de la 20e fois que le Canada passe en finale depuis sa première participation en 1984, et de la première fois qu’il le fait depuis qu’il a remporté le tournoi en 2012. Le Canada s’était incliné en demi-finale face au HC de Genève-Servette les deux dernières années.

  Au moment de la finale jeudi (6 h HE/3 h HP, sur TSN), les Canadiens affronteront le HC de Lugano ou l’Avtomobilist d’Ekaterinbourg, qui disputeront la deuxième demi-finale plus tard mercredi.

  Lundi, le Canada et le HC de Davos avaient disputé le dernier match de la ronde préliminaire, que le Canada avait remporté 2-0, mais leur deuxième rencontre en trois jours, et leur 39e de l’histoire du tournoi, a pris une tournure bien différente.

  Les hôtes ont connu un départ en force qui leur a permis de prendre rapidement les devants par deux buts. Gregory Sciaroni a ouvert la marque pendant un jeu de puissance de Davos à 6 min 16 s, et Sven Ryder a battu le cerbère canadien Jeff Glass (Calgary, Alb./Dinamo de Minsk, KHL) sur un tir du revers seulement 23 secondes plus tard.

  Tom Pyatt (Thunder Bay, Ont,/HC de Genève-Servette, SUI) a permis au Canada de réduire l’écart à 9 min 25 s en marquant tandis qu’il était tout près du filet pendant un avantage numérique de son équipe, mais Alexandre Picard a profité d’un rebond pour placer la rondelle derrière Glass en fin de période et ainsi porter la marque à 3-1 après le premier tiers.

  Félicien du Bois a accru l’avance du HC de Davos à 6 min 43 s de la deuxième période en décochant un tir puissant de la pointe alors que Glass avait la vue voilée, et le gardien a ensuite cédé sa place à Matt Climie (Leduc, Alb./Tigers de Straubing, Allemagne), qui a été ajouté à la formation canadienne mardi.

  James Sheppard (Lower Sackville, N.-É./Flyers de Kloten, SUI) n’a eu besoin que de 22 secondes après le but de du Bois pour amorcer la remontée. Il a porté la marque à 4-2 grâce au travail acharné de Dan Paille (Welland, Ont./Rockford, AHL), puis Ellison a touché la cible à 9 min 33 s et à 18 min 37 s pour confirmer la remontée et créer l’égalité 4-4 après deux périodes de jeu.

  Les hôtes ont repris les devants de nouveau à 7 min 33 s du dernier engagement lorsque Perttu Lindgren a foncé à l’aile droite, optant ensuite pour un tir du côté opposé qui a déjoué Climie, mais Alexandre Giroux (Québec, Qc/HC d’Ambri-Piotta, SUI) a permis au Canada d’égaliser à 15 min 26 s, ce qui a mis la table pour le but gagnant de Conacher seulement 65 secondes plus tard.

  Le Canada a dominé 45-28 au chapitre des tirs au but, effectuant notamment 35 lancers contre 28 pour le HC de Davos dans les 40 dernières minutes de jeu.
