  LAC ST-LOUIS FINISHES PERFECT PRELIMS BY BLANKING VITO’S

  QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Mathias Laferriere capped off an impressive preliminary round with a hat trick, helping the Lions du Lac St-Louis shut out the Saint John Vito’s 5-0 on Friday afternoon in the final round-robin game at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

  Laferriere scored in all five games and finished with a tournament-leading 13 points, helping the Lions become the first team since the Winnipeg Thrashers in 2008 to win all five of its preliminary-round games.

  The Lac St-Louis victory means the teams will meet again Saturday night in the second semifinal (6 p.m. AT).

  Lions captain Adam Capannelli added four assists in the win, leaving him one point behind Laferriere in the scoring race with 12, including a tournament-high 10 assists.

  Yaniv Perets earned his second shutout in as many starts, making 20 saves. He stopped all 23 shots he faced when Lac St-Louis blanked the Saskatoon Contacts 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

  Laferriere scored his first on the Lions’ first shot of the game, toe-dragging around a Saint John defenceman and wiring a snap shot off the inside of the far post past Vito’s goaltender Michael Parkhill at 5:47.

  He scored again on a Lac St-Louis power play with 1:59 to go in the first period, going five-hole on Parkhill, and finished his natural hat trick at 2:14 of the second, again in the power play, one-timing a set-up from Capannelli.

  Kevin Pitts played give-and-go with Capannelli just 57 seconds later, scoring to make it a 4-0 game.

  The Lions scored their final goal at 11:56 of the third period when Azzaro Tinling jumped on a turnover in the Saint John zone and roofed a backhand, adding a goal to the two assists he had already earned.

  The Vito’s did well to hold Lac St-Louis only 25 shots – it averaged 41 per game in its first four games – but could only generate 20 of their own, and failed to kill either of the Lions’ power-play opportunities.

  Quebec Region champions have owned the host team in the preliminary round; Quebec teams have won seven in a row against the hosts, dating back to Winnipeg’s win over Laval-Montréal in 2009.

  QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – Mathias Laferrière a mis fin à une ronde préliminaire impressionnante en réussissant un tour du chapeau pour aider les Lions du Lac St-Louis à blanchir les Vito’s de Saint John 5-0, vendredi après-midi, lors du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire de la Coupe TELUS 2016.

  Laferrière a marqué au moins un but dans les cinq matchs des siens pour terminer au sommet des pointeurs du tournoi avec 13 points, aidant les Lions à devenir la première équipe depuis les Thrashers de Winnipeg en 2008 à remporter ses cinq matchs en ronde préliminaire.

  La victoire de Lac St-Louis signifie que les deux formations s’affronteront à nouveau lors de la deuxième demi-finale samedi soir (18 h HA).

  Le capitaine des Lions, Adam Capannelli, a obtenu quatre mentions d’aide dans la victoire pour terminer un point derrière Laferrière au classement des pointeurs avec 12 points, incluant 10 aides, un sommet au tournoi.  

  Yaniv Perets a réussi son deuxième jeu blanc en deux matchs, effectuant 20 arrêts. Il avait repoussé 23 tirs quand Lac St-Louis a blanchi les Contacts de Saskatoon 4-0, mardi après-midi.

  Laferrière a compté son premier but sur le premier tir au but des Lions en traînant la rondelle avec le bout de la lame de son bâton pour contourner un défenseur de Saint John avant de décocher un tir frappé court à l’intérieur du poteau éloigné pour déjouer le gardien de but des Vito’s, Michael Parkhill, à 5 min 47 s.

  Il a marqué de nouveau pendant une supériorité numérique de Lac St-Louis alors qu’il restait 1 min 59 s à jouer en première période, en déjouant Parkhill d’un tir entre les jambières, et il a complété son tour du chapeau naturel pendant un autre avantage numérique, à 2 min 14 s du deuxième tiers, cette fois en tirant sur réception lorsqu’il a capté une passe de Capannelli.

  À la suite d’un passe et va avec Capannelli seulement 57 secondes plus tard, Kevin Pitts a marqué, creusant l’écart à 4-0.

  Les Lions ont marqué leur dernier but à 11 min 56 s du dernier vingt quand Azzaro Tinling a saisi la rondelle lors d’un revirement dans la zone de Saint John et qu’il a décoché un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure du filet, ajoutant ainsi un but à ses deux mentions d’aides dans la rencontre.

  Les Vito’s ont bien fait en limitant Lac St-Louis à seulement 25 tirs au but – l’équipe avait une moyenne de 41 par match à ses quatre premiers matchs –, mais ils n’ont pu en obtenir que 20. De plus, ils n’ont pu tenir le coup lors des deux supériorités numériques des Lions.

  Les champions du Québec ont dominé l’équipe hôte en ronde préliminaire; les équipes du Québec ont remporté sept matchs consécutifs contre leurs hôtes depuis la victoire de Winnipeg sur Laval-Montréal en 2009.
