  VITO’S SHOCK FIRST-PLACE LIONS, ADVANCE TO TELUS CUP FINAL

  QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Anderson MacDonald and Alex Lafreniere scored in the last six minutes, and the Saint John Vito’s upset the unbeaten Lions du Lac St-Louis 2-1 in Saturday’s second semifinal at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

  The Vito’s will face the North York Rangers in the gold medal game on Sunday night (5 p.m. AT on TSN).

  MacDonald tied the game and got the qplex rocking with 5:40 to go, stopping a shot from Ben Reid before spinning at the hashmarks and firing a wrist shot upstairs on Lac St-Louis goaltender Sandro Silvestre.

  Lafreniere – who hadn’t played since Tuesday – netted the game-winner on a Saint John power play just 1:51 after the MacDonald marker, picking up a rebound in the slot and beating Silvestre.

  Saint John is the first host team since the Red Deer Rebels in 2007 to reach the final, and the first Atlantic team to do so since the Sidney Crosby-led Dartmouth Subways in 2002. It’s only the second time in 43 years of Canada’s National Midget Championship that a team from the Atlantic Region will play for gold.

  No host team has won the national title since the 1991 Calgary Northstars, and the Vito’s – who are already guaranteed to be the first New Brunswick team to win a medal – are just the fifth host to reach the gold medal game since then.

  Adam Capannelli had the lone goal for Lac St-Louis, which became the first team to lose in the semifinals after finishing 5-0 in the preliminary round since the 1991 edition of the Lions.

  Just like in their five round-robin games, Lac St-Louis was first on the board; with just over three minutes off the clock, Sébastien Paquette kept the puck in at the offensive blue-line and threw it towards the net, where Capannelli redirected it through the legs of Saint John goaltender Jake Stewart.

  But Stewart closed the door after that, keeping the high-powered Lions at bay with a 42-save performance.

  The Vito’s managed only 13 shots in the first two periods – Lac St-Louis held a 33-13 advantage after 40 minutes – but came out firing in the third, directing 17 shots at Silvestre in what was arguably their best period of the entire season.

  The Lions will play Sunday for the bronze medal, taking on the Lloydminster Bobcats (noon AT), looking to win an eight medal in as many appearances at the national championship.

  QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – Anderson MacDonald et Alex Lafrenière ont marqué au cours des six dernières minutes et les Vito’s de Saint John ont surpris les Lions du Lac St-Louis, invaincus, par la marque de 2-1 lors de la deuxième demi-finale, samedi, à la Coupe TELUS 2016.

  Les Vito’s affronteront les Rangers de North York dans le match pour la médaille d’or dimanche soir (17 h HA sur TSN).

  MacDonald a créé l’égalité et a soulevé la foule au qplex alors qu’il restait 5 min 40 s au match, en bloquant un tir de Ben Reid avant de pivoter aux lignes hachurées et de décocher un tir du poignet dans la partie supérieure du filet pour déjouer le gardien de but du Lac St-Louis, Sandro Silvestre.

  Lafrenière – qui n’avait pas joué depuis mardi – a marqué le but gagnant pendant une supériorité numérique de Saint John seulement 1 min 51 s après le but de MacDonald, en s’emparant d’un rebond et en trompant la vigilance de Silvestre.

  Saint John est la première équipe hôte depuis les Rebels de Red Deer en 2007 à atteindre la finale, et la première équipe de l’Atlantique à réussir l’exploit depuis les Subways de Dartmouth, menés par Sidney Crosby, en 2002. C’est seulement la deuxième fois au cours des 43 ans d’histoire du Championnat national midget du Canada qu’une équipe de la région atlantique jouera pour l’or.

  Aucune équipe hôte n’a remporté le titre national depuis les Northstars de Calgary en 1991 et les Vito’s – qui sont déjà assurés d’être la première équipe du Nouveau-Brunswick à remporter une médaille – sont seulement la cinquième équipe hôte à se qualifier pour le match pour l’or depuis cette année-là.

  Adam Capannelli a compté le seul but des Lions qui deviennent la première équipe à perdre en demi-finale après avoir accumulé une fiche de 5-0 en ronde préliminaire depuis l’édition 1991 des Lions. 

  Tout comme ce fut le cas lors de leurs cinq matchs en ronde préliminaire, les Lions ont ouvert la marque; après un peu plus de trois minutes de jeu, Sébastien Paquette a gardé la rondelle dans la zone à la ligne bleue et l’a tirée vers le but où Capannelli l’a déviée entre les jambières du gardien de but de Saint John, Jake Stewart.

  Mais ce fut le seul but accordé par Stewart qui a résisté à la puissante offensive des Lions en réalisant 42 arrêts.   

  Les Vito’s n’ont réussi que 13 tirs au but au cours des deux premières périodes – Lac St-Louis dominant ses adversaires 33-13 à ce chapitre après 40 minutes –, mais ils ont entrepris la troisième avec un sentiment d’urgence, dirigeant 17 tirs sur Silvestre au cours de ce qui a sans contredit été leur meilleure période de la saison. 

  Les Lions joueront pour le bronze dimanche contre les Bobcats de Lloydminster (midi HA), tentant de remporter une huitième médaille en autant de présences au championnat national.
