  NORTH YORK TOPS HOST VITO’S FOR FIRST TELUS CUP TITLE

  QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Aidan Casey scored two goals to pace the offence and help the North York Rangers win the TELUS Cup for the first time ever with a 4-1 win over the Saint John Vito’s on Sunday.

  It is the second consecutive year that a team from the Greater Toronto Hockey League has won Canada’s National Midget Championship; the Toronto Young Nationals claimed the national title in 2015.

  Liam Gillanders and James Turner added a goal and an assist apiece for the Rangers, who became the third Central Region champion to win gold, joining the Young Nationals and 2008 Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.

  Will Kelly had the lone goal for the host Vito’s, who equaled the best finish for an Atlantic team in tournament history – the 2002 Dartmouth Subways, led by a 14-year-old Sidney Crosby, also won silver – and are the first New Brunswick team to ever win a medal.

  The capacity crowd at the qplex had the Vito’s going early, with Anderson MacDonald getting three quality scoring chances in the opening minutes, but Rangers goaltender Jett Alexander kept the game scoreless.

  Casey got the game’s first goal at 7:35, letting go a wrist shot that beat screened Saint John netminder Jake Stewart, but Kelly buried a rebound behind Alexander 1:11 later to tie the game.

  The next goal wouldn’t come until just shy of the midway mark of the second period, and it came on a North York power play; Gillanders’ slap shot from the point hit a Saint John player on its way through and found the five-hole on Stewart to give the Rangers the lead for good.

  Defence took over from there, with North York winning puck battles, keeping possession and making sure most of the play was in the Saint John zone; the Vito’s managed just 10 shots in the final 40 minutes.

  With Saint John pressuring late for the tying goal, Casey jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and outraced everyone, going to the backhand to beat Stewart for an insurance goal with 2:16 to go.

  Turner found the empty net with 99 seconds left to clinch the win, and the national title.

  The Rangers finished with a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal; the 44 combined shots were the lowest of any game during the tournament.

  The 2017 TELUS Cup, Canada’s 44th National Midget Championship, will be held April 23-30, 2017, with the Cariboo Cougars of the B.C. Major Midget League playing host.

  QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – Aidan Casey a marqué deux buts pour mener l’offensive des Rangers de North York et aider les siens à remporter la Coupe TELUS pour la première fois de leur histoire en battant les Vito’s de Saint John 4-1, dimanche. 

  C’est la deuxième année de suite qu’une équipe de la Ligue de hockey du Grand Toronto (GTHL) remporte le Championnat national midget du Canada; les Young Nationals de Toronto se sont emparés du titre en 2015.

  Liam Gillanders et James Turner ont obtenu un but et une aide chacun pour les Rangers qui sont devenus les troisièmes champions de la région centrale à remporter l’or, se joignant au Young Nationals et aux Nickel Capital Wolves de Sudbury de 2008.

  Will Kelly a compté le seul but des Vito’s qui ont égalé le meilleur classement de l’histoire du tournoi par une équipe de l’Atlantique – les Subways de Dartmouth de 2002, menés par Sidney Crosby, qui n’avait alors que 14 ans, avaient gagné l’argent –, et ils sont la première équipe de tous les temps du Nouveau-Brunswick à remporter une médaille.

  La salle comble au qplex a énergisé les Vito’s dès le début de la rencontre; Anderson MacDonald a obtenu trois occasions de marquer de qualité au cours des premières minutes, mais le gardien de but des Rangers, Jett Alexander, a tenu le coup.

  Casey a marqué le premier but du match à 7 min 35 s en décochant un tir du poignet qui a déjoué le gardien de but de Saint John, Jake Stewart, dont la vue était voilée, mais Kelly a créé l’égalité seulement 1 min 11 s plus tard, en s’emparant d’un rebond.

  Le prochain but n’est survenu que peu avant le milieu de la deuxième période pendant un avantage numérique de North York; le tir frappé de la pointe de Gillander a heurté un joueur de Saint John pour dévier de sa trajectoire et se faufiler entre les jambières de Stewart, donnant ainsi l’avance aux Rangers pour de bon.

  La défensive a ensuite pris le contrôle de la rencontre, North York remportant les batailles pour la rondelle, gardant possession de celle-ci, et s’assurant que le jeu se déroule dans la zone de Saint John; les Vito’s n’ont réussi que 10 tirs au but au cours des 40 dernières minutes.

  Alors que Saint John exerçait une forte pression pour inscrire le but égalisateur, Casey a saisi une rondelle libre en zone neutre et a gagné la course vers le filet avant de déjouer Stewart d’un tir du revers pour marquer le but d’assurance à 2 min 16 s de la fin du temps réglementaire.

  Turner a fait mouche dans un filet désert alors qu’il restait 99 secondes au chronomètre pour sceller l’issue du match et confirmer les gagnants du titre national.

  Les Rangers ont terminé le match avec un avantage de 26-18 au chapitre des tirs au but; le total combiné de 44 tirs a été le plus faible de tous les matchs du tournoi.

  La Coupe TELUS 2017, le 44e Championnat national midget du Canada, aura lieu du 23 au 30 avril 2017 alors que les Cougars de Cariboo de la Ligue midget majeur de la C.-B. seront les hôtes.
