  EXPRESS COMPLETE COMEBACK WITH SHOOTOUT WIN

  WEYBURN, Sask. – Éloïse Dubé (St-Hyacinthe, Que.) and Joannie Garand (Otterburn Park, Que.) scored in the shootout as the Express du Richelieu erased a three-goal deficit to defeat the Brantford Ice Cats 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

  Richelieu’s first skater, Dubé waited out goaltender Emma Verbruggen (Ancaster, Ont.) and swept the puck into an open net. Garand then sent a backhand high into the net to seal the win.

  Forcing the game past regulation clinched the Express a spot in the medal round.

  When Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ont.) went low stick side from the high slot to make it 4-1 at the 16:10 mark of the second period, Brantford seemed well on its way to its fourth win in five games.

  It did spell the end of goaltender Carolanne Franc-Brown’s (McMasterville, Que.) day, and in came Marithé Lévesque (Baie-Comeau, Que.).

  Two days earlier against the Weyburn Gold Wings, the Express changed goalies mid-game – with Franc-Brown relieving Lévesque – and staged a two-goal comeback.

  Today, nine seconds off the ensuing face-off, Floriane Dion (Verchère, Que.) fed Dubé, who went forehand to backhand to deke Verbruggen and bring the Express to within two.

  Six minutes into the third, Sandrine Cyr (St-Bruno, Que.) sent a pass up ice to Juliette Auger (St-Hyacinthe, Que.), who tipped the puck around Paige Cohoon (St. George, Ont.) and went high short side from the bottom of the face-off circle.

  Seven minutes after that the comeback was complete, when Camille Fleury (Ste-Julie, Que.) sent a cross-crease pass to Katyanne Lebrun (St-Hilaire, Que.) for a one-timer.

  Brantford had control of the first 40 minutes, gaining a 26-10 advantage in shots on net.

  It got on the board early. Paige Rynne’s (Ancaster, Ont.) shot from the slot was stopped, but Franc-Brown was unable to cover the puck. Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) punched in the rebound at the side of the net, and it was 1-0 Ice Cat only 1:27 in.

  The team doubled its lead midway through the period. Three Ice Cats took on four Express players down low, and after repeated attempts at the puck, Rynne was the one putting it in the net

  Richelieu got one back with only 1:30 remaining in the first. Flavie Cadorette (St-Hilaire, Que.) took a few strides in from the side boards and sent a shot past the glove of a screened Verbruggen.

  Midway through the second, Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ont.) sent a centering pass from behind the net to Rynne, whose shot went through Franc-Brown and in, then making it 3-1.

  L’EXPRESS RÉUSSIT SA REMONTÉE ET GAGNE EN TIRS DE BARRAGE

  WEYBURN, Sask. – Éloïse Dubé (St-Hyacinthe, Qc) et Joannie Garand (Otterburn Park, Qc) ont marqué en tirs de barrage après que l’Express du Richelieu eut comblé un déficit de trois buts pour battre les Ice Cats de Brantford 5-4, jeudi après-midi.

  Dubé, la première tireuse de Richelieu, a attendu que la gardienne de but Emma Verbruggen (Ancaster, Ont.) se compromette avant de balayer la rondelle dans un filet grand ouvert. Garand a ensuite décoché un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure du filet pour sceller l’issue de la rencontre.  

  Puisque le match a été décidé après le temps réglementaire, l’Express est assuré de participer à la ronde des médailles.

  Quand Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ont.) a marqué d’un tir bas du côté du bâton du haut de la zone privilégiée à 16 min 10 s de la deuxième période pour porter la marque à 4-1, Brantford semblait en voie de remporter une quatrième victoire en cinq matchs.

  Ce but de Kelly a chassé la gardienne Carolanne Franc-Brown (McMasterville, Qc) de son poste. Elle a été remplacée par Marithé Lévesque (Baie-Comeau, Qc).

  Deux jours plus tôt, dans son match contre les Gold Wings de Weyburn, l’Express avait changé de gardienne au milieu du match – Franc-Brown remplaçant alors Lévesque – et avait réussi à combler un déficit de deux buts.

  Aujourd’hui, neuf secondes après la mise au jeu suivant le la substitution, Floriane Dion (Verchères, Qc) a remis la rondelle à Dubé, qui a effectué une feinte du coup droit au revers pour déjouer Verbruggen et réduire l’écart à deux buts.  

  À la sixième minute de la troisième période, Sandrine Cyr (Saint-Bruno, Qc) a effectué une longue passe avant à Juliette Auger (Saint-Hyacinthe, Qc), qui a contourné Paige Cohoon (St. George, Ont.) et décoché un tir dans la partie supérieure alors qu’elle se trouvait au bas du cercle de mise au jeu.

  Puis, sept minutes après ça, l’Express a complété la remontée quand Camille Fleury (Sainte-Julie, Qc) a effectué une passe transversale à Katyanne Lebrun (Saint-Hilaire, Qc) qui a fait mouche avec un tir sur réception.

  Brantford avait contrôlé les 40 premières minutes de jeu, obtenant 26 tirs au but contre 10.  

  Les Ice Cats ont ouvert la marque tôt. Le tir de Paige Rynne (Ancaster, Ont.) de la zone privilégiée a été bloqué, mais Franc-Brown n’a pu immobiliser la rondelle. Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) s’est emparée du rebond pour marquer et porter la marque à 1-0 après seulement 1 min 27 s de jeu.

  L’équipe a doublé son avance au milieu de la période. Trois Ice Cats ont affronté quatre joueuses de l’Express dans le bas de la zone et après plusieurs tentatives, Rynne est parvenue à marquer.  

  Richelieu a répliqué alors qu’il ne restait que 1 min 30 s à jouer au premier tiers. Flavie Cadorette (Saint-Hilaire, Qc) a quitté la bande de côté et a décoché un tir par-dessus la mitaine de Verbruggen qui avait la vue voilée.

  Au milieu du deuxième vingt, Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ont.) a réussi une passe au centre à Rynne de l’arrière du filet et le tir de celle-ci a trompé la vigilance de Franc-Brown, portant alors la marque à 3-1.
