  ONTARIO BEATS ATLANTIC TO STAY PERFECT

  SYDNEY, N.S. – Once Ontario and Atlantic stepped onto the ice Monday night at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, it took only a few shifts for the Centre 200 crowd to realize the all-Canadian match-up was going to be a typical Canadian game – high tempo and very physical.

  In the end, it was Ontario earning a 5-1 victory to remain unbeaten and keep pace with the United States atop Group B, although it was the 2,000-plus fans in Sydney who went home as winners.

  Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) led the way with two goals for Ontario, while Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL), with a goal and an assist, and Blake Speers (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), with two helpers, also had multiple-point nights.

  Knott got the scoring started just 4:25, and Ontario looked set to pull away early with back-to-back five-on-three power plays midway through the opening period, but the Atlantic penalty kill got the job done, holding Ontario to just three shots.

  Atlantic was strong while shorthanded all night, holding Ontario’s lethal five-man unit without a goal in eight chances, thanks in large part to goaltender Blade Mann-Dixon (Antigonish, N.S./Valley, MHL), was the early hero for the hosts.

  Strome doubled the Ontario lead midway through the second period with a beautiful goal, winning a defensive zone face-off before streaking around an Atlantic defender and squeezing a wrist shot past Mann-Dixon.

  Knott’s second of the game made it 3-0 after two periods.

  Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) added his first goal of the tournament less than two minutes into the third period for a 4-0 lead before Colby Tower (Troy, N.S./Valley, MHL) set up Nicholas Welsh (Halifax, N.S./Shawinigan, LHJMQ), uncovered in the slot, with a terrific cross-crease backhand pass to get Atlantic on the board on the power play.

  Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont./Niagara, OHL) added the final Ontario goal in the last minute.

  Atlantic is back at it Tuesday night (7 p.m. AT) for a New Year’s Eve showdown with the U.S., in Sydney, while Ontario won’t play again until 2014; it faces Russia on Wednesday night (7 p.m. AT) at Centre 200.

  L’ONTARIO BAT L’ATLANTIQUE ET DEMEURE INVAINCU

  SYDNEY, N.-É. – Lorsque l’Ontario et l’Atlantique se sont avancés sur la glace lundi soir au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2014, la foule réunie au Centre 200 a rapidement réalisé que cet affrontement entre deux formations canadiennes allait être un match typiquement canadien, c’est-à-dire à l’allure vive et très robuste.  

  Au bout du compte, l’Ontario a porté un gain de 5-1 à sa fiche pour demeurer invaincu et rester au sommet du groupe B à égalité avec les États-Unis, mais ce sont les plus de 2 000 amateurs qui ont assisté au match à Sydney qui ont été les grands gagnants.

  Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) a mené l’offensive ontarienne en marquant deux buts tandis que Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) accumulait un but et une aide, et Blake Speers (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), deux aides.

  Knott a ouvert la marque à 4 min 25 s de la première période. L’Ontario aurait ensuite pu mettre le match hors de portée en profitant de deux supériorités numériques consécutives de cinq contre trois au milieu du premier tiers, mais l’unité de l’Atlantique affectée au désavantage numérique a été à la hauteur, limitant l’Ontario à seulement trois tirs au but.

  L’Atlantique a bien fait en désavantage numérique toute la soirée, tenant tête à l’attaque à cinq de l’Ontario qui a fait chou blanc en huit tentatives,  grâce en grande partie au travail du gardien de but Blade Mann-Dixon (Antigonish, N.-É./Valley, MHL) qui a été le héros de l’équipe hôte en début de rencontre.

  Strome a doublé l’avance de l’Ontario au milieu de la deuxième période en marquant un superbe but après avoir remporté une mise au jeu en zone défensive et contourné un défenseur de l’Atlantique pour déjouer Mann-Dixon d’un tir des poignets. 

  Le deuxième but du match de Knott a creusé l’écart à 3-0 après deux périodes.

  Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) a réussi son premier but du tournoi moins de deux minutes après le début du dernier tiers, portant la marque à 4-0, puis Colby Tower (Troy, N.-É./Valley, MHL) a effectué une superbe passe transversale du revers à Nicholas Welsh (Halifax, N.-É./Shawinigan, LHJMQ), laissé seul en zone privilégiée, et l’Atlantique avait enfin un but à son actif, un but marqué en supériorité numérique.

  Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont./Niagara, OHL) a inscrit le dernier but de l’Ontario au cours de la dernière minute de jeu.

  L’Atlantique sera à nouveau en action mardi soir (19 h HA) pour un duel contre les États-Unis à la veille du jour de l’An à Sydney tandis que l’Ontario ne jouera pas avant 2014; il affrontera alors la Russie, mercredi soir (19 h HA) au Centre 200.
