  RUSSIA DEFEATS ONTARIO IN SHOOTOUT THRILLER

  SYDNEY, N.S. – Mitchell Marner’s (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) second hat trick of the tournament wasn’t enough, as Russia defeated Ontario in a gripping 6-5 shootout Wednesday night at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  Ivan Kashtanov was mobbed by his teammates after scoring the only goal of the shootout.

  Ontario rebounded from a poor second period to outscore Russia 4-1 in the third and send the game to overtime – and beyond.­

  Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) and Kyle Capobianco (Mississauga, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) also scored for Ontario. Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) added two assists.

  Ontario set a high-paced tempo out of the gate. They fired 11 shots on net before Russia registered one.

  But that one got Russia on the board first; Dmitry Zhukenov picked Marner’s pocket in front of the Ontario net and Ivan Emets fired home the loose puck.

  Strome scored the equalizer by picking up a loose puck in front of the Russian net, spinning around and firing top shelf, blocker side.

  Russia took control with three goals in the middle frame. Artur Tyanulin launched a missile into the far corner for his team-leading fourth goal. Kashtanov and Danila Kvartalnov both were on the receiving end of passes from behind the net to put Russia up 4-1 going into the second intermission

  The third period started better than the second one ended for Ontario. The ice was still wet when Marner atoned for his earlier blunder and finished off a pretty passing play from Knott and Strome to make it 4-2. Forty-three seconds later the lead was down to one when Capobianco scored off the face-off.

  Less than a minute after Denis Gurianov restored Russia’s two-goal lead, Marner scored on a delayed penalty to cut the deficit back to one. And with just over a minute and a half left in the third, the comeback was complete, with Marner netting his tournament-leading sixth goal, forcing extra time

  The win leaves Russia two points behind Ontario for second in Group B, but keeps alive its hope for a semifinal spot and a third straight trip to the gold medal game.

  Russia and Ontario both close out their preliminary round schedules Thursday in Sydney. Russia takes on Atlantic in the early game (2 p.m. AT), and Ontario plays the United States in the evening (7 p.m. AT).

  SYDNEY, N.-É. – Le deuxième tour du chapeau du tournoi de Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) n’a pas suffi à sauver la donne alors que la Russie l’a emporté de façon palpitante 6-5 sur l’Ontario en tirs de barrage, mercredi soir, au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans de 2014.

  Ivan Kashtanov a été pris d’assaut par ses coéquipiers après avoir marqué le seul but des tirs de barrage.

  L’Ontario a rebondi d’une deuxième période médiocre, dominant la Russie 4-1 au troisième tiers, amenant le match en prolongation et même au-delà.

  Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) et Kyle Capobianco (Mississauga, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) ont aussi inscrit des buts pour la formation ontarienne. Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) a quant à lui ajouté deux mentions d’aide.

  Ce ne fut qu’un tir, mais il leur a permis d’être les premiers à s’inscrire à la feuille de pointage; Dmitry Zhukenov a soutiré la rondelle à Marner devant la cage de l’Ontario et Ivan Emets l’a logée au bon endroit.

  Strome a marqué le but égalisateur en reprenant une rondelle libre devant le filet des Russes, effectuant une virevolte et décochant son tir dans le haut de la lucarne, du côté du bloqueur.

  Les Russes ont pris le contrôle de la rencontre avec trois buts comptés au cours de la période médiane. Artur Tyanulin a largué un missile dans le coin éloigné du but, inscrivant le quatrième but de son équipe. Kashtanov et Danila Kvartalnov ont chacun accepté une passe venant d’en arrière du filet pour permettre à la Russie de prendre une avance de 4-1 avant le second entracte.

  L’Ontario a connu un meilleur début de troisième période qu’au deuxième tiers. La glace était encore mouillée lorsque Marner s’est racheté pour sa gaffe précédente et a complété un joli jeu de passes de Knott et de Strome, portant le compte à 4-2. Quarante-trois secondes plus tard, l’avance a diminué encore lorsque Capobianco a compté directement après la mise au jeu.

  Moins d’une minute plus tard, Denis Gurianov a restauré l’avance de deux buts des Russes, puis Marner a marqué au cours d’une punition à retardement, ramenant l’écart à seulement un filet. Avec un peu plus d’une minute et demie à jouer dans le match, la remontée a été complétée lorsque Marner a compté son sixième, un sommet dans ce tournoi, forçant ainsi la tenue d’une prolongation.

  Ce gain place la Russie deux points derrière l’Ontario pour la deuxième place du groupe B, mais la garde bien en vie et lui permet d’espérer de jouer en demi-finale et d’obtenir une troisième chance de suite de participer au match pour la médaille d’or.

  La Russie et l’Ontario mettront fin tous les deux à leur ronde préliminaire jeudi à Sydney. La Russie affrontera l’Atlantique en après-midi (14 h HA) et l’Ontario se mesurera aux États-Unis en soirée à (19 h HA).
