  PATRIOTS SCORE FIVE UNANSWERED, BEAT TERRIERS FOR FIRST RBC CUP WIN

  VERNON, B.C. – Andreas Tsogkas scored once and added two assists, and Michael Prapavessis had a goal and a helper, leading the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots to a 5-1 win over the Yorkton Terriers in Sunday afternoon action at the 2014 RBC Cup.

  The victory is the first ever for the Patriots at Canada’s National Junior A Championship.

  Rory Bell, Ryall Ledyard and Nathan Feric also scored for Toronto Lakeshore (1-1), which had the game’s final five goals and finished with a 32-23 advantage in shots on goal.

  Tayler Thompson had the lone goal for Yorkton (0-1), which dropped to 3-2 all-time in opening games at the national championship.

  Brady Norrish was the only other Terriers skater to record a point, picking up an assist.

  The fifth and final team to debut at Kal Tire Place, the Terriers got off to a fantastic start when Norrish dug out a loose puck at the side of the Patriots net and fed Thompson, who jammed in the game’s first goal just 1:18 after the puck dropped.

  But that lead would last all of 22 seconds; Prapavessis walked in off the blue-line and wired a shot from between the hash marks that a screened Kale Thomson never saw, tying the game.

  Toronto Lakeshore struck again at the 5:56 mark, with Bell tapping in a pretty cross-crease feed from Nicholas Ursitti, giving the Patriots a lead they would not relinquish.

  Despite the quick start from both teams, shots were just 5-4 in favour of Yorkton through one period.

  The Patriots carried the play in the middle frame and were rewarded with a pair of goals.

  Tsogkas made it a 3-1 game at 5:48, jumping on the rebound of a Shier shot and beating Thomson for a power play goal, and Ledyard tipped in a Prapavessis point shot at 7:45 for a 4-1 lead.

  Toronto Lakeshore outshot the Terriers 13-10 in an anticlimactic third period, and Feric capped the scoring on the power play with 7:26 remaining, just getting the puck past Thomson for his first of the tournament.

  The Patriots will enjoy their first off day Monday before taking on the Carleton Place Canadians on Tuesday afternoon (2 p.m. PT), while the Terriers will be in action in Monday’s lone game, meeting the host Vernon Vipers (7 p.m. PT).

  VERNON, C.-B. – Kevin Shier, Michael Prapavessis et Andreas Tsogkas ont obtenu un but et une aide chacun, menant les Patriots de Toronto Lakeshore à un gain de 5-1 contre les Terriers de Yorkton dimanche après-midi, à la Coupe RBC 2014.

  Cette victoire est la toute première des Patriots au Championnat national junior A du Canada.

  Rory Bell et Ryall Ledyard ont également fait mouche pour Toronto Lakeshore (1-1), qui a inscrit les cinq derniers buts de la partie, terminant avec un avantage de 32-23 dans la colonne des tirs au but.

  Tayler Thompson a été l’unique marqueur de Yorkton (0-1), qui a maintenant une fiche de 3-2 dans l’histoire du championnat national dans un contexte de match d’ouverture.

  Brady Norrish a été le seul autre patineur des Terriers à enregistrer un point, cumulant une mention d’aide.

  Cinquième et dernière équipe à entrer en scène à la Kal Tire Place, les Terriers ont connu un départ fantastique lorsque Norrish s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre à côté du filet des Patriots pour la refiler à Thompson qui a inscrit le premier but de la rencontre après seulement 1 min 18 s de jeu.

  Toutefois, cette avance n’aura duré que 22 secondes. Prapavessis a fait une incursion en zone adverse avant de décocher un tir alors qu’il se trouvait entre les lignes hachurées que le cerbère Kale Thomson n’a jamais vu puisque sa vue était voilée, créant ainsi l’égalité.

  Toronto Lakeshore a encore touché la cible à 5 min 56 s. Bell a compté grâce à une superbe passe dans l’enclave de Nicholas Ursitti, permettant aux Patriots de prendre une avance qu’ils n’auront jamais perdue par la suite.

  Malgré le départ canon des deux équipes, Yorkton n’avait qu’une priorité de cinq tirs contre quatre après 20 minutes.

  Les Patriots ont contrôlé le jeu en période médiane et ont été récompensés en inscrivant deux filets.

  Tsogkas a creusé l’avance des Patriots à 3-1 à 5 min 48 s, s’emparant d’un retour de Shier pour battre Thomson en avantage numérique et Ledyard a fait dévier un tir de la pointe de Prapavessis à 7 min 45 s, augmentant la priorité des siens à 4-1.

  Toronto Lakeshore a dirigé 13 tirs contre 10 pour les Terriers au cours d’une troisième période plutôt tranquille et Shier a fermé les livres en supériorité numérique avec 7 min 26 s à faire, battant Thomson pour son premier du tournoi.

  Les Patriots profiteront d’une première journée de repos lundi avant de revoir l’action mardi après-midi (14 h HP) contre les Canadians de Carleton Place. Les Terriers affronteront les hôtes, les Vipers de Vernon, (19 h HP) lors du seul match à l’horaire lundi.
