  SPARROW’S HAT TRICK LEADS VIPERS OVER TERRIERS AT RBC CUP

  VERNON, B.C. – Colton Sparrow opened and closed the scoring, and added another in between, helping the host Vernon Vipers to their first win of the 2014 RBC Cup, 6-4 over the Yorkton Terriers in the lone Monday game at Kal Tire Place.

  The victory was the Vipers’ fourth in five all-time meetings with Yorkton at Canada’s National Junior A Championship; this year marks the fourth time the teams have qualified for the tournament in the same year.

  Liam Coughlin, Brett Mulcahy and Michael McNicholas had the other goals for Vernon (1-1), which scored three times in a span of 41 seconds – and four in 2:57 – early in the second period to take a seemingly commanding 5-0 lead.

  But Brett Boehm, Dylan Johnson, Tanner Lishchynsky and Tyson Enzie scored to pull Yorkton (0-2) within a goal with 9:28 to go before Sparrow’s hat trick goal into an empty net in the final minute secured the two points for the Vipers.

  Austin Smith earned the win with a 40-save performance in the Vernon goal, while Kale Thomson took the loss for Yorkton after allowing five goals on 18 shots.

  Riley Medves stopped all 14 shots he faced in relief for the Terriers.

  The Vipers had the lone goal of the first period off the stick of Sparrow, who stepped into the slot and snapped a shot to the right of Thomson as the Yorkton goaltender was headed left.

  The floodgates opened for the Vipers early in the second period, as the hosts quadrupled their lead before the two-minute mark of the middle frame.

  First it was Coughlin just 51 seconds in, going bar down over the shoulder of Thomson, followed 17 seconds later by Mulcahy, who picked the top corner past the glove of the Yorkton netminder.

  Sparrow made it a 4-0 game 24 seconds after that, banging in a loose puck that had snuck through Thomson, and McNicholas capped the offensive spurt at 3:48 to put Vernon up by five and ended Thomson’s night.

  Boehm got the Yorkton comeback started late in the second, beating Smith from the slot, and the Terriers pumped in three in 6:38 in the first 10:32 of the third period, two on the power play, to set up a wild finish.

  But despite holding a 16-6 edge in shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, and 44-33 overall, there would be no miracle finish for the West Region champions; Sparrow danced around two Yorkton skaters to cap his hat trick with 43.2 seconds left.

  Vernon will try to make it back-to-back wins on Tuesday night when it takes on the unbeaten Dauphin Kings (7 p.m. PT), while Yorkton will see the ice next on Wednesday, when it faces the Carleton Place Canadians (2 p.m. PT).

  VERNON, C.-B. – Colton Sparrow a ouvert et fermé la marque, et a inscrit un autre but entre temps, afin d’aider les hôtes les Vipers de Vernon à obtenir une première victoire à la Coupe RBC 2014, remportant l’unique match de la journée 6-4 contre les Terriers de Yorkton à Kal Tire Place lundi.

  Il s’agit de la quatrième victoire en cinq rencontres totales des Vipers contre la formation de Yorkton au Championnat national junior A du Canada; cette année est la quatrième fois que les deux équipes se qualifient pour le tournoi dans la même année.

  Liam Coughlin, Brett Mulcahy et Michael McNicholas ont inscrit les autres buts de Vernon (1-1), qui a marqué trois fois en l’espace de 41 secondes, et quatre fois en 2 min 57 s, en début de deuxième période, accordant ainsi une avance décisive de 5-0 aux hôtes.

  Brett Boehm, Dylan Johnson, Tanner Lishchynsky et Tyson Enzie ont cependant mis tout en œuvre pour permettre à Yorkton (0-2) de réduire l’écart à un but à 9 min 28 s au cadran, jusqu’à ce que Colton Sparrow compte le but final de son triplé dans un filet vide à quelques minutes de la fin du match, accordant l’écart de deux points aux Vipers.

  Austin Smith s’est vu accorder la victoire pour les 40 tirs qu’il a bloqués devant le filet de Vernon, alors que Kale Thomson essuie la défaite de Yorkton après avoir encaissé cinq buts sur 18 tirs.

  Riley Medves a repoussé les 14 tirs au but qu’il a reçus comme substitut dans le filet des Terriers.

  Les Vipers ont obtenu l’unique but de la première période, marqué à partir de la zone privilégiée par Sparrow, qui a tiré à droite de Thomson alors que le cerbère de Yorkton se dirigeait à gauche.

  Puis ce fut la succession pour les Vipers en début de deuxième tiers, alors que les hôtes ont multiplié leur avance par quatre à deux minutes avant la fin de la période.

  Liam Coughlin a été le premier à marquer à 51 s, logeant la rondelle par-dessus l’épaule de Thomson, suivi 17 secondes plus tard par Brett Mulcahy, qui a rasé la mitaine du gardien de Yorkton pour placer le disque au coin supérieur.

  Ensuite au tour de Colton Sparrow, qui porte la marque à 4-0 que 24 secondes plus tard, tapant une rondelle perdue devant Thomson avant que Michael McNicholas ne couronne l’enchaînement en offensive à 3 min 48 s pour donner une avance de cinq à Vernon et mettre fin à la soirée de Thomson.

  C’est Boehm qui a lancé la virevolte de Yorkton en fin de deuxième tiers, déjouant Smith en zone privilégiée afin d’aider les Terriers à compter trois buts en 6 min 38 s, dont deux en avantage numérique, dans les premières 10 min 32 s de la troisième période et ainsi mettre en jeu une fin surprenante.

  Mais malgré une supériorité de 16-6 au chapitre des tirs au but au cours du dernier vingt, et un total de 44-33, les champions de la région de l’Ouest n’ont pas réussi à accomplir des miracles; Colton Sparrow a contourné deux joueurs de Yorkton pour aller confirmer son tour de chapeau 43,2 secondes avant le retentissement de la sirène.

  Vernon tentera de remporter deux victoires consécutives mardi soir alors que l’équipe affrontera les Kings de Dauphin (19 h HP), toujours invaincu, alors que Yorkton reviendra sur la glace mercredi soir pour s’opposer aux Canadians de Carleton Place (14 h HP).
