  ROCKETS, MINTOS SETTLE FOR DRAW … AGAIN

  MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Gen Bryshun and Keegan Kjargaard traded goals as the Okanagan Rockets and Prince Albert Mintos finished in a 1-1 tie Wednesday at the 2014 TELUS Cup.

  It’s the third tie in as many games for Okanagan (0-0-3), while Prince Albert (1-0-2) has draws in back-to-back games after a tournament-opening win.

  The Rockets are just the second team in the 41-year history of Canada’s National Midget Championship to have three ties in a single preliminary round. The other, the 2011 Winnipeg Thrashers, went on to win the national championship.

  Neither team gave up much defensively in the opening 20 minutes, with the Rockets holding a slight 7-6 advantage in shots on goal through one period.

  Both power plays had time to work in the opening frame, but both teams took penalties while holding the man advantage, leading to a little bit of four-on-four action.

  The offence picked up a little bit in the second period, as did the physical play; neither team was afraid to throw the body, with Prince Albert forward Jared Blaquiere leading the hit parade.

  Okanagan had a 13-5 advantage in shots in the middle frame, meaning Connor Ingram was a busy man; the Mintos’ goaltender, who finished with 31 saves, made almost half his stops in the second period, including a few highlight-reel glove saves.

  Scoreless after two, it didn’t take long for Prince Albert to find the scoreboard in the third period.

  A Mintos dump-in took an awkward hop in front of goaltender Brendan Barry, who quickly kicked out his right pad. But the rebound ended up in the slot and on the stick of Kjargaard, who rifled a shot from the hashmarks over Barry’s glove.

  Okanagan pulled even with 6:40 to go; breaking out of his own zone, Tanner Wishnowski fanned on a stretch pass, but the puck ended up on the stick of Bryshun, who walked into the Prince Albert zone and snapped a shot over the glove of Ingram.

  The assist gives Wishnowski seven points (on seven Okanagan goals) in three games.

  The Rockets finished with a 32-24 shot advantage, and neither team was successful on the power play – Okanagan was 0-for-6, while Prince Albert was 0-for-4.

  Okanagan tries again for its first win on Thursday, taking on the Halifax McDonald’s at noon MT, while Prince Albert meets Moose Jaw in an all-Saskatchewan night cap at 7:30 p.m. MT.

  LES ROCKETS ET LES MINTOS FONT MATCH NUL… ENCORE

  MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Gen Bryshun et Keegan Kjargaard se sont échangé des buts dans le match entre les Rockets de l’Okanagan et les Mintos de Prince Albert qui s’est soldé par un verdict nul de 1-1, mercredi à la Coupe TELUS 2014.  

  C’est la troisième nulle en autant de matchs pour Okanagan (0-0-3), tandis que Prince Albert (1-0-2) a accumulé deux matchs nuls de suite après avoir remporté son premier affrontement du tournoi.

  Les Rockets sont seulement la deuxième équipe en 41 ans d’histoire du Championnat national midget du Canada à accumuler trois matchs nuls en une ronde préliminaire. L’autre, les Thrashers de Winnipeg de 2011, a remporté le championnat national.

  Ni l’une ni l’autre des équipes n’ont cédé défensivement au cours des 20 premières minutes, les Rockets dominant légèrement 7-6 au chapitre des tirs au but dans la période.

  Les deux unités affectées à l’avantage numérique sont entrées en action au premier tiers, mais les deux formations ont écopé de punitions alors qu’elles jouissaient d’une supériorité numérique ce qui a entraîné des situations à quatre contre quatre.

  L’offensive a semblé se réveiller en deuxième période tout comme le jeu robuste; les deux équipes n’ont pas hésité à distribuer les mises en échec, l’avant Jared Blaquiere de Prince Albert menant le bal.

  Okanagan a obtenu 13 tirs au but contre 5 au deuxième tiers. Le gardien de but Connor Ingram a donc été occupé. Il a repoussé 31 tirs au cours de la rencontre, presque la moitié de ceux-ci en deuxième période, effectuant quelques arrêts de la mitaine dignes des faits saillants.

  Aucun but n’a été marqué au cours des deux premières périodes, mais il n’aura pas fallu attendre longtemps en troisième pour que Prince Albert ouvre enfin la marque.

  Les Mintos ont tiré la rondelle dans la zone, mais celle-ci a effectué un bond bizarre devant le gardien de but Brendan Barry, qui a rapidement avancé sa jambière droite. Mais le rebond s’est retrouvé en zone privilégiée et sur la lame du bâton de Kjargaard qui a décoché un tir précis des lignes hachurées pour déjouer Barry par-dessus la mitaine.

  Okanagan a nivelé la marque alors qu’il restait 6 min 40 s à jouer. S’échappant de sa propre zone, Tanner Wishnowski a voulu tenter une longue passe, mais il a raté son coup et la rondelle a abouti sur la lame du bâton de Bryshun qui s’est infiltré dans la zone de Prince Albert pour décocher un tir frappé court par-dessus la mitaine d’Ingram.

  Cette aide porte la fiche de Wishnowski à sept points (sur sept buts d’Okanagan) en trois matchs.

  Les Rockets ont terminé la rencontre avec une avance de 32-24 au chapitre des tirs au but et ni l’une ni l’autre des formations n’ont su tirer profit de leur jeu de puissance – Okanagan a échoué à ses six occasions, et Prince Albert n’a pu faire mieux en quatre occasions.

  Okanagan tentera de porter une première victoire à sa fiche jeudi lorsqu’elle affrontera les McDonald’s de Halifax à midi HR tandis que Prince Albert affrontera Moose Jaw dans un match opposant deux formations de la Saskatchewan à 19 h 30 HR.
