  YOUNG NATIONALS TOP GRENADIERS, CLINCH SEMIFINAL SPOT

  MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Steven Harland scored the game-winner late in the second period, helping the Toronto Young Nationals to their third win in a row at the 2014 TELUS Cup, 3-1 over the Grenadiers de Châteauguay on Thursday afternoon.

  The victory leaves Toronto (3-1-0) alone in top spot for the time being, and clinches a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

  Jeremy Pullara and Noah Gurr had the other goals for Toronto.

  Justin Samson scored the lone goal for Châteauguay (1-1-2), which missed an opportunity to wrap up a weekend berth of its own.

  The teams failed to record a goal in the opening 20 minutes, despite a power play opportunity each. Toronto finished the first period with a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal.

  Châteauguay found itself in penalty trouble in period No. 2, and the Young Nationals would capitalize just past the midway mark of the middle frame; Pullara scooped up a loose puck after an Adam DeLuca shot hit traffic in front, spun and snuck a shot under the arm of Grenadiers goaltender Étienne Montpetit.

  Toronto would double its lead with 3:59 left in the second.

  Max Routledge won a puck battle along the boards before dishing to Louis Di Matteo, whose wrist shot was tipped by Harland for the 2-0 goal.

  Down two entering the third period, and outshot 26-16, Châteauguay cut the lead in half at 6:35; after Mikael Sabourin poke-checked a Toronto defenceman, goaltender Oliver Jacobs tried to cover the puck, only to have it squirt free and onto the stick of Samson, who tapped it in to make it 2-1.

  But that would be as close as the Grenadiers would get, despite outshooting Toronto 8-7 in the third period.

  Gurr hit the empty net from his own zone with exactly a minute to go, putting the final nail in the Châteauguay coffin and providing the final margin of victory.

  The Young Nationals will look to solidify their spot atop the standings when they face the Okanagan Rockets in Friday’s first game (9:30 a.m. MT), while the Grenadiers meet the host Moose Jaw Generals in the preliminary round finale (4:30 p.m. MT).

  LES YOUNG NATIONALS BATTENT LES GRENADIERS ET ACCÈDENT AUX DEMI-FINALES

  MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Steven Harland a marqué le but gagnant en fin de deuxième période, aidant les Young Nationals de Toronto à remporter leur troisième match de suite à la Coupe TELUS 2014, une victoire de 3-1 sur les Grenadiers de Châteauguay, jeudi après-midi.

  Grâce à cette victoire, Toronto (3-1-0), seule au sommet du classement pour le moment, est assurée d’une place en demi-finale samedi.

  Jeremy Pullara et Noah Gurr ont inscrit les autres buts de Toronto.  

  Justin Samson a été l’auteur du seul but de Châteauguay (1-1-2) qui a raté l’occasion de se qualifier elle aussi pour le carré d’as.

  Les équipes ne sont pas parvenues à marquer au premier tiers bien que chacune ait joui d’une supériorité numérique. Toronto a dominé la formation québécoise 14-8 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période.
   
  Châteauguay a écopé de plusieurs punitions au deuxième tiers et les Young Nationals en ont profité peu après le milieu de la période. Pullara s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre après qu’un tir d’Adam DeLuca eut dévié dans la circulation devant le filet, il a pivoté sur lui-même et a décoché un tir qui s’est faufilé sous le bras du gardien de but des Grenadiers, Étienne Montpetit.

  Toronto a ensuite doublé son avance alors qu’il restait 3 min 59 s à jouer dans la période.

  Max Routledge a remporté une bataille pour la rondelle le long de la bande avant de la passer à Louis Di Matteo dont le tir des poignets a été dévié par Harland, portant la marque à 2-0.  

  Accusant un retard de deux buts et de 26-16 au chapitre des tirs au but pour entreprendre la troisième période, Châteauguay a réduit l’écart de moitié à 6 min 35 s. Après que Mikael Sabourin eut harponné la rondelle que transportait un défenseur de Toronto, le gardien de but Oliver Jacobs a tenté de la couvrir, mais la rondelle est ressortie et s’est retrouvée sur le bâton de Samson qui l’a tirée dans le filet. La marque était maintenant 2-1.

  Mais les Grenadiers n’ont pu se rapprocher davantage malgré le fait qu’ils ont obtenu huit tirs au but contre sept dans le dernier vingt.

  Gurr a marqué le dernier but de la rencontre en tirant de sa propre zone dans un filet désert avec exactement une minute à jouer, clouant ainsi le cercueil de Châteauguay.

  Les Young Nationals tenteront de consolider leur place au sommet du classement lorsqu’ils affronteront les Rockets de l’Okanagan lors du premier match vendredi (9 h 30 HR), tandis que les Grenadiers se mesureront à leurs hôtes, les Generals de Moose Jaw, dans le dernier match de la ronde préliminaire (16 h 30 HR).
