  CZECH REPUBLIC COMES BACK TO DEFEAT ATLANTIC IN SEVENTH-PLACE GAME

  PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – Two goals 34 seconds apart early in the third period was the difference in a 3-2 Czech Republic win over Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. The victory gave the Czechs seventh place at the 2104 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  With the win, the Czechs also avenged their loss to Atlantic in the 2012 seventh-place game in Windsor, Ont.

  Atlantic came close to tying the game several times in the closing moments. Czech goalie Ales Stezka stoned Nathan Noel (St. John’s, N.L./Saint John, LHJMQ) on the doorstep and two Atlantic players rang shots off the post in the last 90 seconds.

  Noel and Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) scored for Atlantic. Mitchell Balmas (Sydney, N.S./Cape Breton, NSMMHL) added two assists.

  Filip Suchy, Simon Stransky and Vojtech Budik scored for the Czechs.

  The Czech Republic opened the scoring just over six minutes in, when Suchy finished off a three-on-two rush from the left face-off circle.

  Frédéric Foulem (Dieppe, N.B./Stanstead College, Cdn. Prep) wasn’t busy during the first period, but made several key saves when called upon, stopping Suchy on a breakaway and Jiri Bambula on a partial breakaway moments later. His teammates rewarded him for keeping them in the game three minutes before the first intermission. Noel skated from just inside his own blue-line, cut in front of the goalie and slid the puck under his pads for the equalizer.

  There was finally a break in the back-and-forth affair late in the second period. Noel took the puck from his zone around one defender, then through another, before finding Jacob trailing behind him for the go-ahead goal.

  The Czechs fought back to tie it up five minutes into the third. Stransky passed to himself off the left boards and scored short side on Foulem.

  Half a minute later they took the lead for good. The puck found Budik along the left boards, whose quick shot found its way through traffic.

  Atlantic outshot the Czech Republic 31-27.

  PORT HAWKESBURY, N.-É. – Deux buts en 34 secondes au troisième vingt ont fait la différence pour la République tchèque qui l’a emporté 3-2 sur l’Atlantique samedi après-midi. Cette victoire permet aux Tchèques de terminer en septième position du Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2014.

  Avec ce gain, la République tchèque a également vengé son échec subi contre l’Atlantique au match pour la septième place de 2012, à Windsor, Ontario.

  L’Atlantique a passé près de créer l’égalité à plusieurs occasions. Le cerbère tchèque Ales Stezka a fermé la porte à Nathan Noel (St. John’s, T.-N.-L./Saint-Jean, LHJMQ) et deux joueurs de l’Atlantique ont frappé le poteau au cours des 90 dernières secondes.

  Noel et Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.-B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) ont marqué pour l’Atlantique. Mitchell Balmas (Sydney, N.-É./Cap-Breton, NSMMHL) a cumulé deux aides.

  Frédéric Foulem (Dieppe, N.-B./Collège Stanstead, école privée canadienne) a été peu occupé au premier tiers, mais a effectué plusieurs arrêts clés à des moments opportuns, bloquant Suchy sur l’attaque massive et Jiri Bambula alors qu’il était presque en échappée quelques instants après. Ses coéquipiers l’ont récompensé de les avoir gardés dans le match, avec trois minutes à faire avant le premier entracte. Noel a patiné de l’intérieur de sa ligne bleue jusqu’au filet adverse où il a coupé devant avant de pousser le disque sous les jambières du gardien de but, créant ainsi l’égalité.

  L’impasse a finalement été brisée en fin de deuxième période, alors que les deux équipes provoquaient tour à tour des choses en attaque. Noel s’est emparé de la rondelle dans sa zone, a contourné un défenseur, puis un autre, avant de repérer Jacob qui se trouvait derrière lui pour le but qui a donné l’avance à l’Atlantique.

  Les Tchèques ont bataillé fort pour créer l’égalité à la cinquième minute de la troisième période. Stransky s’est fait une passe pour lui-même sur la bande de gauche et a battu Foulem du côté rapproché.

  Trente secondes plus tard, les Tchèques ont pris l’avance pour de bon. La rondelle s’est retrouvée sur la palette de Budik le long de la bande de gauche. Il a décoché un tir rapide qui s’est faufilé dans la circulation.

  L’Atlantique a dominé la formation tchèque 31-27 au chapitre des tirs au but.
