  IRWIN, JOHNSTON CUE ANOTHER CANADIAN COMEBACK

  KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) scored 46 seconds apart in the third period as Canada erased a late one-goal deficit to defeat the United States and send 4,500 fans home happy Wednesday night.

  With just over five minutes to play, Irwin reeled in a centering pass just behind her in the slot, spun and slid the puck in on her backhand.

  Less than a minute later, with Hilary Knight sitting two for roughing, Johnston tipped Courtney Birchard’s (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) point shot past American goalie Alex Rigsby.

  Johnston finished with two goals on the night. Birchard and Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) added two assists each, while Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Calgary, CWHL) and Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) added an assist a piece. The point was Krzyzaniak’s first with the National Women’s Team.

  Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, CWHL) made 30 saves in the win.

  Dani Cameranesi and Shiann Darkangelo scored for the Americans. Rigsby made 18 saves in the loss.

  The game marked the first time the two sides had seen each other since the gold medal game of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Despite the fact that half of the players on each roster were not in Sochi, the intensity that’s come to define the rivalry was still there.

  The Americans got on the board first only two minutes in. Some sustained pressure down low ended when Emily Pfalzer sent a pass from below the goal line out front to Cameranesi. Her initial shot was stopped, but the winger whacked in the rebound.

  Canada equalized midway through the period on the power play. Rattray fed Bram below the goal line, who one-timed a pass to Johnston in front.

  The Americans regained the lead 4:18 into the second on a power play of their own, when Darkangelo pounced on a rebound just outside the crease.

  There are no games Thursday at the 4 Nations Cup. Canada next plays Friday night (10 pm ET/7 pm PT) against Finland, while the United States takes on Sweden in the afternoon (4 pm ET/1 pm PT).

  Avec un peu plus de cinq minutes à écouler, Irwin a capté une passe centrée derrière elle dans l’enclave avant de tourner sur elle-même et de glisser la rondelle dans le filet d’un tir du revers.

  Mois d’une minute plus tard, avec Hilary Knight au cachot pour rudesse, Johnston a fait dévier un tir de la pointe de Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) derrière la cerbère américaine Alex Rigsby.

  Johnston a terminé la partie avec deux buts. Birchard et Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) ont accumulé deux aides chacune, alors que Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Calgary, LCHF) et Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./Université du Dakota du Nord, WCHA) ont récolté une aide chacune. Le point de Krzyzaniak était son premier dans l’uniforme de l’équipe nationale féminine.

  Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, CWHL) a repoussé 30 rondelles dans une cause gagnante.

  Dani Cameranesi et Shiann Darkangelo ont compté pour les Américaines, alors que Rigsby a effectué 18 arrêts dans la défaite.

  Les deux équipes croisaient le fer pour la première fois depuis le match pour la médaille d’or des Jeux olympiques d’hiver de 2014 à Sotchi. Malgré le fait que la moitié des joueuses des deux formations n’étaient pas à Sotchi, l’intensité qui définit cette rivalité était bien présente.

  Les États-Unis se sont d’abord inscrits au pointage après seulement deux minutes de jeu. La pression des Américaines a été bien contenue en fond de territoire jusqu’à ce qu’Emily Pfalzer dirige une passe de derrière la ligne des buts en avant du filet à Cameranesi. Son tir initial a été bloqué, mais l’ailier a compté sur le retour. 

  Le Canada a créé l’égalité à mi-chemin dans la période lors d’une supériorité numérique. Rattray a passé le disque à Bram près de la ligne des buts qui l’a aussitôt redirigée vers Johnston devant le filet.

  Les Américaines ont repris l’avance à 4 min 18 s en deuxième période lors d’un jeu de puissance. Darkangelo a fait mouche sur un rebond tout juste en dehors du demi-cercle.   

  Aucun match n’est prévu jeudi à la Coupe des 4 nations. Le Canada jouera vendredi soir (22 h HE/19 h HP) face à la Finlande, tandis que les États-Unis feront face à la Suède en après-midi (16 h HE/13 h HP).
