  GOLD WINGS GO TO 2-0

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – On paper it had the makings of a mismatch. The Weyburn Gold Wings, winners of the West Region, were playing its second Esso Cup game ever; the Edmonton Thunder, the Pacific-Alberta champions, their 36th.

  In the end, the underdogs prevailed.

  Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) had a goal and two assists, while Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.) and Jenica Whitrow (Yellow Grass, Sask.) a goal and an assist apiece to lead the Gold Wings past the Thunder 4-2 on Monday afternoon.

  The line of Pirlot, Bourassa and Whitrow finished with eight points.

  “We were moving the puck well with one another,” Bourassa said. “We knew where each other were on the ice and were able to put pucks in the net.”

  After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the deadlock was broken just past the halfway point of the second. Whitrow – the hero of Weyburn’s opening day win over the Sudbury Lady Wolves – brought the puck out from the corner and slide a backhand five-hole on Edmonton goalie Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alta.).

  Edmonton equalized minutes later when Weyburn got into penalty trouble. With Tessa Wilson (Mazenod, Sask.) serving a double minor and Kassidy Sjostrand (Midale, Sask.) a minor, the Thunder went to work on an extended power play. Jessica Healey (Edmonton, Alta.) was allowed to walk in from the blue line; her wrist shot went off Jane Kish’s (Weyburn, Sask.) glove and in.

  Things finally opened up more in the third. Kish stoned Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta.) just outside the crease, minutes after denying a streaking Cayle Dillon (Edmonton, Alta.) at the doorstep.

  Bourassa soon rewarded her tender’s efforts, on a goal eerily similar to Whitrow’s.

  “I brought it out from the corner, pulled it around the defender and then backhanded it five-hole,” Bourassa said.

  Weyburn extended its lead on a two-on-one, when Pirlot put home a Whitrow rebound.

  Edmonton cut the deficit back to one when Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta.) buried a rebound on the doorstep.

  But the underdogs were not to be denied. Caitlin Dempsey (Heward, Sask.) sent a wrist shot high into the twine with less than three minutes to go to seal the win for the Gold Wings.

  Kish picked up her second win in as many starts, stopping 18 of 20 shots.

  Kikuchi faced 23 shots and took the loss in the Thunder net.

  Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) a marqué un but et a obtenu deux mentions d’aide, alors que Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.) et Jenica Whitrow (Yellow Grass, Sask.) ont chacune marqué un but et ajouté une aide menant les Gold Wings à un gain de 4-2 aux dépens du Thunder lundi après-midi.

  Le trio constitué de Pirlot, Bourassa et Whitrow a fini le match avec huit points.

  « Nous déplacions bien la rondelle entre nous, » souligne Bourassa. « Nous savions où chacune de nous se trouvait sur la glace et avons pu placer des rondelles dans le filet. »

  Après une période d’ouverture sans but, la forteresse a été ébranlée à mi-temps du deuxième tiers. Withrow – l’héroïne de la victoire du match d’ouverture de Weyburn contre les Lady Wolves de Sudbury – a ramené la rondelle du coin de la patinoire et l’a glissée d’un tir du revers entre les jambières de la gardienne de but d’Edmonton, Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alb.).

  Edmonton a créé l’égalité quelques minutes plus tard lorsque Weyburn s’est retrouvée à purger des punitions. Avec Tessa Wilson (Mazenod, Sask.) écopant d’une punition mineure double et Kassidy Sjostrand (Midale, Sask.), d’une mineure, le Thunder s’est mis à la tâche pour tirer profit de cet avantage numérique prolongé. Jessica Healey (Edmonton, Alb.) a pu entrer dans la zone à partir de la ligne bleue, et d’un tir du poignet, elle a propulsé la rondelle qui a heurté le gant de Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) puis est allée se placer au fond du but.

  Les choses se sont mises à bouger davantage en dernière période. Kish a bloqué un tir d’Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alb.) qui se trouvait à la limite de l’enclave, quelques minutes après avoir repoussé un tir de Cayle Dillon (Edmonton, Alb.) qui passait en trombe à sa porte.

  Bourassa a vite récompensé les efforts de sa passeuse, avec un but étrangement semblable à celui de Whitrow.

  « J’ai sorti la rondelle du coin, l’ai ramenée en contournant la défenseure, puis je l’ai fait passer entre les jambières de la gardienne de but avec un tir du revers, » précise Bourassa.

  Weyburn a porté son avance à deux buts lorsque Pirlot est allée placer un rebond de Whitrow là où il le fallait.

  Edmonton a réduit le déficit à un seul but lorsqu’Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alb.) a réussi à faire pénétrer un rebond dans le filet.

  Celles que l’on voyait perdantes n’avaient toutefois pas dit leur dernier mot. Caitlin Dempsey (Heward, Sask.) a propulsé un tir du poignet dans la partie supérieure avec moins de trois minutes de jeu à écouler, scellant la victoire pour les Gold Wings.

  Kish a récolté sa deuxième victoire en autant de matchs, bloquant 18 des 20 tirs en sa direction.

  Kikuchi a affronté 23 tirs de ses rivales devant le filet du Thunder, portant la défaite à sa fiche.
