  STEEVES BREAKS AWAY FOR THREE, LEADS MONCTON TO FIRST WIN

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Faith Steeves (Peticodiac, N.B.) scored three times on the breakaway and Brooke Murphy (Riverview, N.B.) had two goals of her own, as the Moncton Rockets found its way into the win column with a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Thunder on Tuesday at the Esso Cup.

  Sarah Johnson (Moncton, N.B.) and Isabelle Letourneau (Moncton, N.B.) both added two assists.

  Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta.) led the Thunder with two goals and an assist, while Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) had a goal and two assists.

  It had been a rough start to the Esso Cup for the Rockets. The team had dropped its first two games by a combined 13-2 and was facing a must-win situation to have any hope of being around for Friday’s semifinals.

  “We were really focused, but there was that little bit of what-if we lose type of thinking,” Steeves said after the game. “I feel like we kept our cool and played like we should. We kind of threw the distractions in the garbage.”

  Murphy gave Moncton its first lead of the Esso Cup 4:47 into the game. A simple dump in was too casually pushed aside by Thunder goalie Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alta.). The puck bounced back out front where Murphy was waiting to pounce.

  Moncton doubled its lead just over three minutes later, when Murphy completed an on-the-fly passing play with Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, N.B.) and Letourneau.

  Moncton continued to build momentum – and its lead – as the period went on. Just over 13 minutes in, Steeves beat her defender just inside the blue line and walked in alone to beat Kikuchi low stick side.

  Edmonton finally stopped the bleeding in the closing seconds of the period. Gorda’s shot from the top of the face-off circle appeared to bounce off Boucher and in.

  The Thunder looked to build on that momentum swing on the power play early in the second. Instead, the pendulum swung back the other way, when Steeves got sprung on another breakaway.

  The Thunder responded late with a short-handed goal of its own. Poznikoff was relentless in the Moncton zone on the penalty kill, and her effort was rewarded when she brought the puck out from behind the Rockets’ net and slid it under Waterman.

  Edmonton drew within one 13 minutes into the third, when Gorda backhanded home a rebound, but Steeves restored the two-goal lead with three to play.

  Poznikoff scored her second of the game with the goalie pulled on the power play, but with less than half a minute to go, it was too little, too late.

  Brianne Waterman (Memramcook, N.B.) made 42 saves in picking up her first Esso Cup win.

  Sarah Johnson (Moncton, N.-B.) et Isabelle Letourneau (Moncton, N.-B.) ont chacune obtenu deux mentions d’aide.

  Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alb.) a mené l’offensive du Thunder avec deux buts et une aide, alors que Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alb.) a inscrit un filet et a obtenu deux mentions d’aide.

  Ce fut un départ difficile pour les Rockets à la Coupe Esso. L’équipe s’est inclinée lors de ses deux premières rencontres avec une marque combinée de 13-2 et se trouvait donc dans une situation où la victoire était la seule option possible si elle voulait entretenir quelque espoir de faire partie des demi-finales de vendredi.

  « Nous étions vraiment concentrées, mais les conséquences d’une défaite nous hantaient tout de même un peu, » a avoué Steeves à la sortie du match. « Je sens que nous avons gardé notre calme et avons joué comme il le fallait. Nous avons mis les distractions de côté. »

  Muphy a donné la première avance à l’équipe de Moncton à la Coupe Esso après 4 min 47 s de jeu. La rondelle tout simplement larguée et nonchalamment repoussée par la gardienne Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alb.) a rebondi droit devant Murphy qui n’attendait que ce moment.

  Moncton a doublé son avance environ trois minutes plus tard lorsque Murphy a achevé un jeu de passe avec Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, N.-B.) et Letourneau.

  Moncton a continué de profiter de la conjoncture – et de son avance – tandis que la période suivait son cours. Après un peu plus de 13 minutes de jeu, Steeves a réussi à déjouer une défenseure en deçà de la ligne bleue puis elle a poursuivi son chemin seule et a trompé la vigilance de Kikuchi d’un tir bas du côté du bâton.

  Edmonton a finalement arrêté l’hémorragie dans les dernières secondes de la période. Le tir de Gorda à partir du haut du cercle de mise au jeu a semblé rebondir sur Boucher et est entré dans le filet.

  Alors que l’on attendait à ce que le Thunder profite de ce tournant en avantage numérique tôt en deuxième, le pendule a oscillé dans la direction opposée et Steeves a surgi de nouveau lors d’une échappée.

  Le Thunder a réagi avec un peu de retard avec un but marqué en désavantage numérique. Poznikoff était impitoyable dans la zone de Moncton lors du jeu en désavantage numérique, et son effort a été récompensé lorsqu’elle a repris la rondelle derrière le but des Rockets et l’a glissée sous Waterman.

  Edmonton a réussi à compter après 13 minutes de jeu en troisième, lorsque Gorda s’est emparé d’un rebond et a effectué un tir du revers, mais Steeves a restauré l’avance de deux buts avec seulement trois minutes à jouer.

  Poznikoff a compté son deuxième but du match dans un filet désert, la gardienne ayant été retirée pour profiter d’un avantage numérique; mais avec moins de trente secondes à jouer, c’était trop peu, trop tard.

  Brianne Waterman (Memramcook, N.-B.) a réussi 42 arrêts et a inscrit sa première victoire à la Coupe Esso.
