  STONEY CREEK WINS BATTLE OF ONTARIO

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Nine days ago the Sudbury Lady Wolves defeated the Stoney Creek Sabres for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association championship.

  On Tuesday night the Sabres exacted a little revenge.

  Alexa Vasko’s (St. Catharines, Ont.) shorthanded goal with 26 seconds left in the second proved to be the difference, as the host team improved to 3-0 at this year’s Esso Cup, joining the Weyburn Gold Wings atop the leaderboard.

  Emily Calligan (Hannon, Ont.) had the other Stoney Creek goal.

  Karli Shell (Lively, Ont.) scored the lone marker for Sudbury.

  Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) picked up her second win of the tournament. Stephanie Pascal (Val Caron, Ont.) took the loss.

  After Olympic champions Becky Kellar and Laura Fortino (herself a former Sabre) helped drop the ceremonial first puck, the teams took to the ice and set a blistering pace for the first 10 minutes.

  You couldn’t help but feel that Sudbury felt extra motivated tonight. A tweet – #redemption – sent out by defenseman Sarah Jarome (Stoney Creek, Ont.) earlier in the day hinted as much.

  “We knew we had to get on them and we didn’t want to lose to them ever again,” Vasko confirmed after the game.
   
  Stoney Creek would get on the board first.

  With the ice still wet for the start of the second period, Stoney Creek brought the fans not still in line at the concession stands to their feet. With her teammates creating traffic in front of the crease, Kayla Vespa (Stoney Creek, Ont.) threw the puck on net. Callligan pounced on the loose puck.

  It would take eight minutes for Sudbury to equalize. After winning the face-off back to Kennedy Lanktree (Mindemoya, Ont.), Shell drove to the net and positioned herself perfectly for the rebound on the point shot.

  The Lady Wolves continued to create the best scoring chances, twice being turned away by the crossbar in the second half of the period. When Sabres captain Mallory Young (Caistor Centre, Ont.) was called for tripping with 63 seconds to go in the second, it looked like Sudbury had the extra advantage it needed.

  Instead, it was Vasko picking up a deflected clearing attempt by the Sabres’ penalty kill, driving in alone and beating Pascal high.

  Stoney Creek came close to adding an insurance marker in the third, when Claire Merrick (Oakville, Ont.) beat Pascal from the slot. However, the goal was waved off and Victoria Klimek (Orangeville, Ont.) sent to the penalty box for goalie interference.

  With the win the host team once again sent its fans home happy. And the crowd’s vocal support hasn’t gone unnoticed by the players.

  “We can see and hear them cheering,” said Vasko, “and it’s just awesome to have that behind us to carry us through this journey.”

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Il y a neuf jours, les Lady Wolves de Sudbury avaient battu les Sabres de Stoney Creek, gagnant ainsi le championnat de l’Association de hockey féminin de l’Ontario.

  Mardi soir, les Sabres ont pris une petite revanche.

  Le but d’Alexa Vasko (St. Catharines, Ont.) avec 26 secondes à écouler au deuxième tiers a fait la différence et l’équipe hôte a amélioré sa fiche à 3-0 à la Coupe Esso, rejoignant les Gold Wings de Weyburn au sommet du classement.

  Emily Calligan (Hannon, Ont.) a été l’autre buteuse de Stoney Creek.

  Karli Shell (Lively, Ont.) a été la seule joueuse de Sudbury à toucher la cible.

  Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) a signé un deuxième gain dans le tournoi. Stephanie Pascal (Val Caron, Ont.) a subi la défaite.

  Les championnes olympiques Becky Kellar et Laura Fortino (elle-même un ancienne membre des Sabres) ont participé à la mise au jeu protocolaire avant le match et les équipes ont amorcé le match avec beaucoup d’énergie au cours des dix premières minutes.

  Stoney Creek semblait sentir un élan additionnel de motivation ce soir. Un gazouillis, #rédemption, publié aujourd’hui par la défenseure Sarah Jerome (Stoney Creek, Ont.) le laissait présager.  

  « Nous savions que nous devions avoir le dessus sur elles et nous ne voulions plus jamais perdre contre elles », a confirmé Vasko après la partie.

  Stoney Creek a été la première à s’inscrire au pointage.

  Dès les premiers instants de la rencontre, Stoney Creek a fait plaisir aux partisans locaux. Alors que ses coéquipières créaient de la circulation devant le demi-cercle, Kayla Vespa (Stoney Creek, Ont.) a dirigé la rondelle vers le filet. Callligan a poussé la rondelle libre.

  Sudbury n’a eu besoin que de huit minutes pour remettre les pendules à l’heure. Après avoir gagné la mise au jeu au profit de Kennedy Lanktree (Mindemoya, Ont.), Shell a foncé au filet avant de se placer parfaitement pour le rebond du tir de la pointe.

  Les Lady Wolves ont continué de créer les meilleures chances de marquer, étant deux fois frustrées par la barre horizontale dans la deuxième moitié de la période. Lorsque la capitaine des Sabres Mallory Young (Caistor Centre, Ont.) a écopé d’une punition pour avoir fait trébucher, Sudbury a semblé avoir l’avantage dont il avait besoin.

  À la place, Vasko a profité d’une tentative de dégagement déviée des Sabres en désavantage numérique pour filer seule et battre Pascal dans la partie supérieure.

  Stoney Creek a passé près de marquer un but d’assurance en troisième période, lorsque Claire Merrick (Oakville, Ont.) a trompé la vigilance de Pascal dans l’enclave. Toutefois, ce but a été refusé et Victoria Klimek (Orangeville, Ont.) a dû aller au cachot pour obstruction sur la gardienne de but.

  Avec cette victoire, l’équipe hôte a encore une fois fait plaisir à ses partisans. Les joueuses ont d’ailleurs remarqué leur soutien vocal.

  « On peut les voir et les entendre nous encourager », a confié Vasko. « C’est superbe de pouvoir les avoir avec nous durant cette aventure. »
