  STURTZ’S THREE POINTS LEAD CANADIANS INTO RBC CUP FINAL

  VERNON, B.C. – Andy Sturtz had a goal and two assists, breaking out a tournament-long scoring slump and helping the Carleton Place Canadians to a 5-3 semifinal win over the Dauphin Kings on Saturday night, booking a spot in Sunday’s championship game at the 2014 RBC Cup.

  The Canadians will face the Yorkton Terriers Sunday night (7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT, TSN) with Canada’s National Junior A Championship on the line.

  Carleton Place is into the final in its first appearance at the national championship; the Canadians are in just their fifth season of existence, having made the jump from Junior B in 2009.

  Anthony McVeigh scored twice for Carleton Place, while Luke Edwards and Dylan Gareau added singles.

  Dylan Butler, Tanner Butler and Brayden Cuthbert replied for Dauphin.

  It didn’t take the Canadians long to open the scoring; McVeigh tipped in a Kelly Summers point shot just 2:35 in, beating Kings netminder Michael Stiliadis, who was named Top Goaltender and Most Valuable Player at Friday night’s awards banquet.

  Dauphin responded with a pair of goals in the second half of the opening period. Dylan Butler tied the game with a shorthanded goal at 11:58, going five-hole on Carleton Place goaltender Guillaume Therien, and Tanner Butler gave the Kings their first lead at 16:41, snapping a shot past Therien from the high slot.

  Down 2-1 after one and outshot 16-7, the Canadians tied the game just 2:10 into the second period when Edwards found a loose puck at the side of the Dauphin net and beat Stiliadis for the 2-2 goal.

  Cuthbert restored the Dauphin lead just past the 12-minute mark when he was left alone in front of Therien, but the advantage lasted just 43 seconds because Sturtz wired a shot over the shoulder of Stiliadis to make it 3-3.

  The goal was the first of the tournament for Sturtz, who had 104 points in the regular season and accepted the RBC Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year award on Friday, but had just a single assist in four preliminary round games.

  He picked up his third point of the night on the game-winner, dishing to Gareau, who one-timed a shot over Stiliadis’ glove midway through the third period.

  McVeigh wrapped up the scoring with 11.3 seconds to go, finding the empty Dauphin goal.

  Neither team had much chance to do damage on the power play; the Canadians and Kings each took just a single minor penalty in the game.

  VERNON, C.-B. – Andy Sturtz a récolté un but et deux aides, mettant fin à une disette offensive dans ce tournoi pour aider les Canadians de Carleton Place à l’emporter 5-3 en demi-finale contre les Kings de Dauphin, samedi soir. Les Canadians participeront au match de championnat de la Coupe RBC 2014.

  Carleton Place a rendez-vous avec les Terriers de Yorkton dimanche soir (19 h 30 HE/16 h 30 HP, TSN) avec le titre du Championnat national junior A du Canada à l’enjeu.

  Carleton Place jouera en finale à sa première présence au championnat national. Les Canadians en sont seulement à leur cinquième année d’existence, ayant fait le saut du junior B en 2009.

  Anthony McVeigh a compté deux buts pour Carleton Place, alors que Luke Edwards et Dylan Gareau ont marqué une fois chacun.

  Dylan Butler, Tanner Butler et Brayden Cuthbert ont répliqué pour Dauphin.

  Les Canadians n’ont pas tardé à ouvrir la marque; McVeigh a fait dévier un tir de la pointe de Kelly Summers après seulement 2 min 35 s de jeu, battant le cerbère des Kings Michael Stiliadis, qui avait été nommé Meilleur gardien de but et Joueur par excellence au banquet de remise de prix, vendredi soir.

  Dauphin a rebondi avec deux buts dans la deuxième moitié de la première période. Dylan Butler a créé l’égalité en désavantage numérique à 11 min 58 s, battant le portier de Carleton Place, Guillaume Therien, entre les jambières et Tanner Butler a procuré l’avance aux Kings pour la première fois à 16 min 41 s, trompant la vigilance de Therien dans la zone privilégiée.

  En retard 2-1 après une période et dominés 16-7 dans la colonne des tirs, les Canadians ont remis les pendules à l’heure à 2 min 10 s du deuxième vingt, lorsqu’Edwards s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre à côté du but de Dauphin pour battre Stiliadis.

  Cuthbert a redonné l’avance à Dauphin tout juste après la 12e minute, laissé seul devant Therien. Toutefois, cette avance n’a duré que 43 secondes puisque Sturtz a logé le disque par-dessus l’épaule de Stiliadis, portant le pointage à 3-3.

  Ce but a été le premier du tournoi de Sturtz, lui qui a amassé 104 points en saison régulière et reçu le titre de Joueur de l’année 2014 RBC de la Ligue de hockey junior canadienne vendredi. Il n’avait récolté qu’une mention d’aide en quatre parties en ronde préliminaire.

  Il a obtenu son troisième point de la soirée sur le but de la victoire, remettant le disque à Gareau qui a tiré par-dessus la mitaine de Stiliadis à mi-chemin en troisième période.

  McVeigh a fermé les livres avec 11,3 secondes à écouler, poussant le disque dans une cage béante.

  Aucune équipe n’a pu faire de dommage en avantage numérique. Les Canadians et les Kings n’ont écopé que d’une punition mineure dans le match.
