  CANADA SPREADS AROUND OFFENCE IN HLINKA-OPENING WIN OVER SWISS

  PIESTANY, Slovakia – Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) had a goal and an assist to lead Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team to a 5-1 win over Switzerland in Monday’s opening game at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

  Barzal was the lone Canadian skater to record multiple points; 11 different players had at least one.

  Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL), Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL), Mitchell Vande Sompel (London, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) and Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) did the scoring for Canada, which improved to 13-1 all-time against the Swiss in summer U18 competition.

  Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) made 20 saves to record the win in the Canadian goal.

  Strome got the scoring started for Canada at the 7:27 mark of the opening period, taking a pass from Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) at the side of the Swiss net and one-timing a shot past goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe.

  Barzal doubled the lead less than three minutes later, stepping out from behind the net and snapping a shot to the far side over van Pottelberghe’s glove, sending Canada to the first intermission up 2-0.

  Having outshot Switzerland 12-4 in the first period, the Canadians continued to fire to open the second, and were rewarded just 4:06 in when Crouse batted in a loose puck on the backhand for a 3-0 lead.

  Vande Sompel came in off the point to beat van Pottelberghe with a backhand of his own midway through the middle frame to make it 4-0, but Dominik Schmid answered for the Swiss exactly a minute later – the lone puck to beat Sawchenko.

  Stephens capped the scoring just past the two-minute mark of the third period.

  Neither team could do anything on the power play; Canada went without a goal in six chances with the man advantage, while Switzerland was unable to convert on five opportunities.

  The Canadians are right back on the ice at Zimny Stadion on Tuesday when they face Sweden at 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT, looking to take a stranglehold on their preliminary round group.

  PIESTANY, Slovaquie – Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, C.-B./Seattle, WHL) a accumulé un but et une mention d’aide pour mener l’équipe nationale masculine estivale des moins de 18 ans du Canada à une victoire de 5-1 sur la Suisse lors du premier match de la Coupe commémorative Ivan Hlinka des M18 2014.  

  Barzal a été le seul joueur canadien à inscrire plus d’un point, mais 11 joueurs différents en ont obtenu au moins un.

  Strome a ouvert le pointage pour le Canada à 7 min 27 s de la première période. Alors qu’il se trouvait sur le côté du but suisse, il a capté une passe de Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) et a décoché un tir sur réception pour déjouer le gardien de but Joren van Pottelberghe.

  Barzal a doublé l’avance des siens moins de trois minutes plus tard en s’avançant de l’arrière du filet pour décocher un tir du côté éloigné, par-dessus la mitaine de van Pottelberghe. Le Canada s’est retiré dans son vestiaire avec une avance de 2-0 au premier entracte.

  Après avoir dominé la Suisse 12-4 au chapitre des tirs au but au premier tiers, les Canadiens ont continué de viser la cible pour amorcer le deuxième tiers et leurs efforts ont été récompensés à 4 min 6 s quand Crouse a récupéré une rondelle libre et décoché un tir du revers pour creuser l’écart à 3-0.

  Vande Sompel a ensuite quitté son poste à la pointe pour tromper la vigilance de van Pottelberghe d’un autre tir du revers au milieu de la période, portant le pointage à 4-0, mais Dominik Schmid a répliqué pour la Suisse exactement une minute plus tard – son tir fut le seul à déjouer Sawchenko.

  Stephens a inscrit le dernier but de la rencontre peu après la deuxième minute de jeu au dernier vingt.  

  Ni l’une ni l’autre des formations ne sont parvenues à trouver le fond du filet en avantage numérique; le Canada a fait chou blanc à six occasions et la Suisse, à cinq.

  Les Canadiens seront de retour sur la glace du Zimny Stadion mardi pour affronter la Suède à 8 h HE/5 h HP. Ils tenteront alors de se hisser au premier rang de leur groupe en ronde préliminaire.
