LAZAR’S HAT TRICK KEEPS CANADA UNBEATEN AT SUMMER CAMP
DAVID BRIEN
SHERBROOKE, Que. – Curtis Lazar (Vernon, B.C./Edmonton, WHL) opened and closed the scoring with shorthanded goals, part of a hat trick performance to lead Canada to a 6-3 win over Russia on Thursday night at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp.
The win is Canada’s second in as many nights against the Russians – it scored a 5-2 victory on Wednesday – and its third straight at summer camp, with one game left.
Lazar added an assist for a four-point night, while Sam Bennett (Holland Landing, Ont./Kingston, OHL) and Nick Baptiste (Ottawa, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) recorded a goal and an assist apiece.
Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver, B.C./Kootenay, WHL) was the other Canadian goal scorer, and Haydn Fleury (Carlyle, Sask./Red Deer, WHL) had two helpers.
For the Russians, Ivan Barbashev, Nikita Cherepanov and Vladislav Gavrikov found the back of the net.
Lazar broke the ice at 6:29 of the opening period, capitalizing on a shorthanded breakaway with a perfectly placed wrist shot.
After killing off three-and-a-half Russian power plays in the first period, Canada finally gave up a man advantage tally early in the second period; Cherepanov’s wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic and past Canadian netminder Tristan Jarry (Delta, B.C./Edmonton, WHL) to tie the game.
But the Canadian power play struck back late in the period; power-play markers from Baptiste and Bennett were sandwiched around a Reinhart goal to put Canada up 4-1 through 40 minutes.
The three quick-strike goals came in a span of 4:51 and capped a period that saw Canada register 23 shots.
Russia pulled back within two at the 4:21 mark of the third period thanks to Gavrikov, but Lazar answered just 28 seconds later to restore the three-goal advantage.
Barbashev scored Russia’s second power play goal to make it 5-3, but Lazar rounded out the scoring, and his hat trick, into an empty net with 28 seconds left and the Canadians shorthanded.
Canada split its goaltending duties between Jarry, who stopped eight of the nine shots sent his way, and Zach Fucale (Rosemère, Que./Halifax, QMJHL), who made 17 saves on 19 chances.
In the Russian goal, Ilya Sorokin took the loss with a 34-save effort.
Canada will play its final game at camp Thursday (noon ET) against the Czech Republic at Ed Meagher Arena on the Concordia University campus, while Russia will meet Sweden on Saturday night (7 p.m. ET) in Sherbrooke.
LE TOUR DU CHAPEAU DE LAZAR PERMET AU CANADA DE RESTER INVAINCU AU CAMP ESTIVAL
DAVID BRIEN
