SWEDES BLANK CANADA WHITE, ADVANCE TO U17 SEMIFINALS

SARNIA, Ont. – Filip Gustavsson was terrific, turning aside all 35 shots he faced to help Sweden shut out Canada Red 2-0 on Thursday night and move into the semifinals at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The Swedes will meet the unbeaten United States in Friday’s semifinals; the Americans knocked off Sweden 6-3 on Sunday in the opening preliminary round game for both in Lambton Shores, Ont.
Linus Lindström and Lias Andersson had the goals for Sweden, scoring 1:36 apart in the second period.
Samuel Harvey (Alma, Que./Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL) was the hard-luck loser in the Canada White goal, finishing with 22 saves.
The Canadians controlled the play right off the opening face-off, coming close twice before 60 seconds had come off the clock. But, as he would be all night, Gustavsson was up to challenge.
Sweden held an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, helped out by a trio of power plays, although Harvey and the Canadian penalty kill kept the game scoreless into the first intermission.
Canada Red continued to pressure in the second, outshooting the Swedes 10-5 in the middle frame, but Lindström finally broke through at 13:20, circling out of the corner and snapping a shot low past Harvey.
Andersson doubled the lead at 14:56, finding a loose puck at the side of the Canadian net and beating Harvey from a sharp angle, giving the Swedes a 2-0 advantage through 40 minutes.
The third period was all about Gustavsson; the Swedish netminder made 16 of his 35 saves in the final 20 minutes, constantly keeping the Canadians at bay, and clinching Sweden’s third trip to the semifinals in the last four years.
Canada Red didn’t have much opportunity to do damage on special teams; the Swedes took just a single penalty, a too many men on the ice call in the first period.
The Canadians will travel to Lambton Shores on Friday night to face Canada Red in an all-Canadian fifth-place game at The Shores Recreation Centre (7 p.m. ET).

SARNIA, Ont. – Filip Gustavsson a été fantastique; il a bloqué les 35 tirs en sa direction aidant la Suède à blanchir Équipe Canada Blancs 2-0 jeudi soir et à accéder aux demi-finales du Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2014.
Les Suédois affronteront l’équipe invaincue des États-Unis en demi-finale vendredi. Les Américains ont surpassé les Suédois 6-3 dimanche lors du match d’ouverture de la ronde préliminaire entre ces deux formations à Lambton Shores, Ont.
Linus Lindström et Lias Andersson ont inscrit les buts suédois en marquant à 1 min 36 s d’intervalle en deuxième période.
Samuel Harvey (Alma, Qc/Rouyn-Noranda, LHJMQ) a été le perdant devant le but d’Équipe Canada Blancs, terminant le match avec 22 arrêts.
Les Canadiens ont maîtrisé le jeu dès la première mise au jeu, passant très près de compter à deux reprises avant même que le chronomètre n’eût écoulé ses soixante premières secondes. Mais, comme il l’a fait tout au long de la rencontre, Gustavsson n’a pas baissé la garde.
La Suède a eu l’avantage des tirs au but 11-9 en première période, en partie grâce à trois avantages numériques, bien que Harvey et l’unité affectée au désavantage numérique des Canadiens aient repoussé l’adversaire jusqu’au premier entracte.
Canada Blancs a maintenu la pression au deuxième tiers, dominant 10-5 au chapitre des tirs au but jusqu’au milieu de la période, mais Lindström a finalement ouvert la marque à 13 min 20 s lorsqu’en sortant du coin, il a décoché un tir bas et déjoué Harvey.
Anderson a doublé l’avance des siens à 14 min 56 s, saisissant une rondelle libre au côté du filet canadien et battant Harvey d’un angle très fermé, procurant aux Scandinaves une avance de 2-0 après 40 minutes de jeu.
La dernière période a été celle de Gustavsson; le gardien de but suédois a réussi 16 de ses 35 arrêts au cours des 20 dernières minutes, protégeant constamment son enclave contre l’assaut de l’équipe canadienne, et procurant aux Suédois leur troisième qualification pour les demi-finales des quatre dernières années.
Canada Blancs n’a pas eu beaucoup d’occasions de profiter de son unité affectée à l’avantage numérique; les Suédois n’ont eu qu’à un seul passage au banc des punitions pour avoir eu trop de joueurs sur la patinoire en première période.
Les Canadiens se rendront à Lambton Shore vendredi soir pour affronter Équipe Canada Rouges dans un duel tout canadien pour la cinquième place au Shores Recreation Centre à 19 h HE.
