O’LEARY SCORES WINNER WITH NINE SECONDS LEFT, GOLD BEATS BLUE AT U17 CAMP
JASON LA ROSE
CALGARY, Alta. – Michael O’Leary (Halifax, N.S./Salisbury School, USHS) scored his second goal of the game with just nine seconds remaining to give Gold a wild 4-3 win over Blue in Monday night’s third-place game at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.
Blue had erased a two-goal deficit in the final 3:22 thanks to two goals by Matthew Timms (Waterdown, Ont./Hamilton, OMHA), but O’Leary jammed in the winner in the dying seconds.
Tanner Kaspick (Brandon, Man./Brandon, MMAAAHL) and Jonah Gadjovich (Whitby, Ont./Whitby, OMHA) also scored for Gold, which won despite being outshot 27-18.
The line of O’Leary, Kaspick and Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Okanagan, BCMML) combined for eight points; O’Leary had two goals an assist, Kaspick a goal and a helper, and Jost three assists.
Tyler Steenbergen (Sylvan Lake, Alta./Red Deer, AMHL) joined Timms as goal scorers for Blue.
O’Leary opened the scoring with just under five minutes left in the first period, sliding a shot through the five-hole of Blue goaltender Dylan Wells (St. Catherines, Ont./Niagara, OMHA) for the lone goal of the opening frame.
Kaspick pushed the lead to two on a power play late in the second period, tipping a bouncing puck past Daniel Toews (Chase, B.C./Thompson, BCMML), who replaced Wells midway through the game, but Steenbergen got Blue on the board just 1:37 later, making it a one-goal game again.
Gadjovich went five-hole on Toews 4:35 into the third period to give Gold a little bit of breathing room, but Timms would score with 3:22 to go, and again 1:51 later to tie the game, setting up O’Leary’s winner.
Joseph Raaymakers (Chatham, Ont./Chatham-Kent, MHAO) got the start in goal for Gold, stopping all 12 shots he faced, while Evan Fitzpatrick (Lower Sackville, N.S./Newbridge Academy, NSMMHL) turned aside 12 of the 15 directed his way.
Wells and Toews both made seven saves in the Blue goal; Wells went seven-for-eight, while Toews stopped seven of 10.
O’LEARY MARQUE LE BUT GAGNANT À NEUF SECONDES DE LA FIN ET LES OR BATTENT LES BLEUS AU CAMP DES M17
JASON LA ROSE
CALGARY, Alb.
