WHITE GETS FIRST WIN AT U18 CAMP, BEATS RED IN SHOOTOUT

CALGARY, Alta. – Sarah Hine (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) and Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton, AMMFHL) scored in the shootout, leading White to its first win at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, 3-2 over Red in the camp finale on Saturday afternoon.
The game was the last chance for players to impress the Team Canada staff before the final 22-player roster for the three-game series against the United States is named on Sunday morning.
After Hine and Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, JWHL) traded goals in round one of the shootout, Poznikoff beat Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL) and Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) stopped Kaitlin Tse (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL).
Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man./Central Plains, MFMHL) then missed her chance to win it for White, but Neatby turned away Lydia Murray (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, Midget AA) to preserve the victory.
Audrey Belzile (St-Hyacinthe, Que./Québec Nord, LHFDQ) and Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) scored in regulation for White, which held 1-0 and 2-1 leads before needing extra time to earn the victory.
Murray and Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) had the goals for Red, which had scored 3-1 and 3-2 victories in the first two games of the intrasquad series.
White got on the board first with a shorthanded marker just three minutes in; Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL) stole the puck behind the Red net before finding a wide-open Belzile, who went up and over the blocker of Red goaltender Kristen Campbell (Brandon, Man./Shaftesbury Academy, CAHS).
That would be the lone goal of an evenly-matched first period that saw Red hold a slim 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
It took until the 16:31 mark of the second period for Red to draw even; good work behind the net allowed Madison Field (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) to find Murray in front, and she wired a wrist shot past Neatby.
White got the lead back midway through the third period when Vinkle’s shot from a sharp angle found its way past Vandyk and trickled over the goal line, but O’Neill tied it for Red with 4:18 left.
Both teams had a power play in overtime, but neither could convert and the game headed to a shootout.
Red finished regulation and overtime with a 36-26 advantage in shots on goal, including 19-9 over the final 25 minutes.

CALGARY, Alb. – Sarah Hine (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) et Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alb./Edmonton, AMMFHL) ont marqué en tirs de barrage, menant les Blancs à leur première victoire au camp de sélection de l’équipe nationale féminine des moins de 18 ans du Canada, un gain de 3-2 sur les Rouges dans le dernier match du camp samedi après-midi.
Ce match était la dernière occasion pour les joueuses d’impressionner le personnel d’Équipe Canada avant l’annonce, dimanche matin, des 22 joueuses choisies pour participer à une série de trois matchs contre les États-Unis.
Après que Hine et Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, C.-B./Pursuit of Excellence, JWHL) se soient échangé des buts lors de la première ronde des tirs de barrage, Poznikoff a déjoué Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL), et Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) a bloqué le tir de Kaitlin Tse (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL).

Murray et Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) ont fait mouche pour les Rouges qui ont gagné les deux premiers matchs intraéquipes du camp 3-1 et 3-2.
Les Blancs ont ouvert la marque grâce à un but en infériorité numérique après seulement trois minutes de jeu; Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL) a dérobé la rondelle derrière le filet des Rouges avant de la passer à Belzile qui était seule. Cette dernière a décoché un tir par-dessus le gant bloqueur de la gardienne des Rouges, Kristen Campbell (Brandon, Man./Shaftesbury Academy, CAHS).
Ce but a été le seul de la première période au cours de laquelle les deux formations se sont livré une chaude lutte, les Rouges ayant une légère avance de 9-8 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Il aura fallu attendre jusqu’à 16 min 31 s de la deuxième période pour voir les Rouges niveler la marque; du beau travail derrière le filet a permis à Madison Field (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) de repérer Murray devant le but. Celle-ci a ensuite décoché un tir des poignets pour déjouer Neatby.
Les Blancs ont repris les devants au milieu du troisième tiers quand le tir de Vinkle d’un angle aigu s’est faufilé derrière Vandyk et a franchi la ligne des buts, mais O’Neill a créé l’égalité pour les Rouges alors qu’il restait 4 min 18 s à jouer.
Les deux équipes ont profité d’une supériorité numérique en prolongation, mais ni l’une ni l’autre n’ont pu marquer. Le match allait donc être décidé en tirs de barrage.
Les Rouges ont dominé les Blancs 36-26 dans la colonne des tirs au but, incluant 19 tirs contre neuf au cours des 25 dernières minutes.
