  SPECIAL TEAMS HELP CANADA TO U18 WIN OVER U.S.

  CALGARY, Alta. – Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) had a goal and an assist to pace the offence, leading Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team to a 5-2 win over the United States in the second game of their three-game series Friday night.

  The Canadians have won the first two games of the series (they scored a 3-2 victory on Thursday) and are assured of a series win over their North American rivals for the fourth consecutive year.

  Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL), Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL), Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) and Micah Hart (Saanichton, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) had the other goals for Canada, which relied on its special teams; the Canadians scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded.

  Carly Jackson (Amherst, N.S./Cumberland County, Midget AA) was a stand-out in her international debut in the Canadian goal, finishing with 21 saves as the Americans held a 23-22 advantage in shots on goal.

  Rebecca Gilmore and Alexis Mauermann did the scoring for the United States.

  It took more than 10 minutes for the game’s first shot to be recorded, and it was the game’s first goal; O’Neill picked up a loose puck with the Canadians shorthanded and tucked a shot around U.S. goaltender Alex Gulstene on the breakaway.

  That would be it for scoring in the first period, but the floodgates opened in the second.

  Gilmore brought the U.S. even on the power play at 1:23, sweeping the rebound of a Jincy Dunne point shot past Jackson, and Mauermann ripped home a one-timer 86 seconds later to give the Americans their first lead.

  But it would take less than two minutes for the Canadians to draw even; off a scramble in front of the U.S. net, Gebhard poked the puck past Gulstene for a power play goal, tying the game 2-2.

  Labbe then gave Canada the lead for good, following up on a rebound after Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) had been pulled down on a breakaway.

  Hart capped a busy second period, blasting a point shot past Gulstene on another Canadian man advantage.

  The Americans carried the play in the third period, outshooting Canada 11-5, but couldn’t find a way to beat Jackson, and Agnew hit the empty net with just five seconds to go to round out the scoring.

  Canada will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon when the teams meet at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park; the puck drops at 1:30 p.m. MT.

  Les Canadiennes ont remporté les deux premiers duels de la série (elles ont triomphé 3-2 jeudi) et elles sont assurées de remporter les honneurs de la série contre leurs rivales nord-américaines, pour une quatrième année de suite.

  Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL), Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL), Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alb./Warner School, JWHL) et Micah Hart (Saanichton, C.-B./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) ont été les autres buteuses du Canada, qui a su profiter de ses unités spéciales, comptant deux fois sur le jeu de puissance et une fois en infériorité numérique.

  Hart a mis fin à une deuxième période occupée, décochant un tir de la pointe derrière Gulstene au cours d’un autre avantage numérique.

  Les Américaines ont contrôlé le jeu en troisième période, dominant les Canadiennes de 11 tirs contre 5 sans toutefois battre Jackson. Agnew a compté dans une cage déserte avec seulement cinq secondes à écouler pour sceller l’issue du match.

  Le Canada tentera de balayer son adversaire dimanche après-midi dans un duel au Markin MacPhail Centre de WinSport du Parc olympique du Canada. La partie s’amorcera à 13 h 30 HR.
