  FOUR-GOAL FIRST HELPS CANADA TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT HLINKA GOLD

  BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team scored four times in a 13-minute span of the first period to help it to a 6-2 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday and a seventh consecutive gold medal at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

  Canada has taken home every gold medal from the annual summer under-18 tournament since 2008, winning a remarkable 31 of 33 games over that span. It was 5-0 this year, outscoring its opponents 32-10.

  Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL), Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL), Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) and Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) scored in the opening 20 minutes for Canada to put the game out of reach early.

  Crouse finished with two goals, while Nicolas Roy (Amos, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL) was the other Canadian to put his name on the scoresheet.

  Marner finished with a goal and two assists, Roy had a goal and a helper, and Jérémy Roy (Richelieu, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) and Matthew Spencer (Oakville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) chipped in with two assists apiece.

  The Canadians quieted the sold-out, pro-Czech crowd at Alcaplast Arena early, with Strome taking a pass from Marner and tucking it past Czech goaltender Daniel Vladar just 3:34 in.

  Crouse doubled the lead on a Canadian counterattack at 9:06, snapping a shot past Vladar, and Marner found a loose puck in a scramble in front of the Czech net to make it 3-0 less than four minutes later.

  Konecny finished the offensive onslaught – and ended Vladar’s night – with three minutes left in the opening period, hammering home a slap shot on a Canadian power play.

  Despite the big Canadian lead, the teams were even in shots on goal after one period, 8-8.

  The Czechs got one back with the man advantage early in the second period, but Nicolas Roy restored the four-goal lead midway through the middle frame, tipping in a Spencer point shot.

  The tournament co-hosts made it 5-2 before the end of the second, but Crouse scored the lone goal of the third, redirecting shot from Marner for his team-leading sixth goal of the tournament.

  Canada finished with a 24-19 advantage in shots on goal.

  Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) had another solid performance in the Canadian goal, making 17 saves. For the tournament, Sawchenko finished a perfect 4-0, with a 2.25 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.

  BRECLAV, République tchèque – L’équipe nationale masculine estivale des moins de 18 ans du Canada a marqué quatre fois en 13 minutes en première période pour vaincre la République tchèque 6-2, samedi, et remporter sa septième médaille d’or consécutive à la Coupe commémorative Ivan Hlinka des M18.   

  Le Canada a remporté l’or à chaque tournoi estival annuel des moins de 18 ans depuis 2008, gagnant 31 de ses 33 matchs au cours de cette période; un exploit remarquable. Cette année, il a accumulé une fiche de 5-0, dominant ses adversaires 32-10.

  Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL), Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL), Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) et Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) ont marqué au cours du premier vingt pour mettre rapidement le match hors de portée.

  Crouse a terminé la rencontre avec deux buts. Nicolas Roy (Amos, Qc/Chicoutimi, LHJMQ) a été l’autre buteur des Canadiens.  

  Dans le match, Marner a accumulé un but et deux mentions d’aide, Roy, un but et une aide, et Jérémy Roy (Richelieu, Qc/Sherbrooke, LHJMQ) et Matthew Spencer (Oakville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL), deux mentions d’aide chacun.

  Les Canadiens ont rapidement fait taire la foule protchèque qui avait rempli l’aréna Alcaplast quand Strome a capté une passe de Marner et déjoué le gardien tchèque Daniel Vladar après seulement 3 min 34 s de jeu.

  Crouse a doublé l’avance canadienne lors d’une contre-attaque à 9 min 6 s, décochant un tir frappé court et déjouant Vladar. Moins de quatre minutes plus tard, Marner s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre lors d’une mêlée devant le filet pour creuser l’écart à 3-0.

  Konecny a mis fin à la poussée offensive – et chassé Vladar de son poste devant le filet – alors qu’il restait trois minutes au premier tiers en décochant un puissant tir frappé pendant que le Canada profitait d’un avantage numérique.

  Malgré l’importante avance canadienne, les deux formations étaient à égalité 8-8 au chapitre des tirs au but après une période de jeu.

  Les Tchèques ont réduit l’écart pendant une supériorité numérique tôt en deuxième période, mais Nicholas Roy a redonné une avance de quatre buts aux siens au milieu de la période, déviant un tir de la pointe de Spencer. 

  Les cohôtes du tournoi ont porté la marque à 5-2 avant la fin du deuxième tiers. Crouse a ensuite réussi le seul but de la troisième période en redirigeant un tir de Marner, inscrivant ainsi son sixième but du tournoi, un sommet dans l’équipe.

  Le Canada a terminé le match avec une avance de 24-19 dans la colonne des tirs au but.

  Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alb./Moose Jaw, WHL) a réussi une autre excellente performance devant le filet du Canada, effectuant 17 arrêts. Il termine le tournoi avec une fiche de 4-0, une moyenne de buts contre de 2,25 et un pourcentage d’arrêts de 0,907.
