  POULIN SCORES LATE TO GIVE RED WIN IN FALL FESTIVAL OPENER

  CALGARY, Alta. – Even in an intrasquad game Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) has a flair for the dramatic.

  The two-time Olympic gold medallist and 2014 overtime hero scored with 49 seconds left in the third period to give Red a 2-1 win over Black in the opening game of Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival on Wednesday night.

  Poulin’s shot from just inside the blue-line cleanly beat Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, B.C./Princeton University, ECAC) high to the blocker side, giving Red the come-from-behind victory to open camp.

  Samantha Sutherland (Cochrane, Alta./Boston University, HE) also scored for Red, while Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Calgary, CWHL) had the lone goal for Black.

  After a day of off-ice testing and media and two days of practices, both teams were still in the getting-to-know you stage with their linemates, as neither side seemed entirely in sync through the opening 20 minutes.

  After a series of near-miss passes, Black opened the scoring on the transition 8:20 in, when Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) sent a pass from the side boards to the top of the crease, where Bram beat Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, CWHL) low to the stick side.

  Red struggled to build any momentum of its own, taking until the 8:59 mark of the period to register its first shot on goal. However, it came out of the first intermission with more intensity, dictating play more but still unable to solve Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./University of Wisconsin, WCHA).

  Just shy of the halfway point of the second period, both teams made a goalie change, with Newell replacing Desbiens for Black and Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) taking over for Lacasse for Red.

  Red took only 24 seconds to welcome Newell to the crease, with Sutherland beating the still-cold netminder from in close to tie the game 1-1.

  Lacasse and Howe combined to make 17 saves in the win. Desbiens and Newell stopped 15 shots in the loss.

  Intrasquad games continue Thursday night, with Red taking on White. Puck drop is 7 p.m. MT at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park.

  CALGARY, Alb. – Même en match intraéquipe, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Qc/Université de Boston, HE) a le don d’ajouter une touche de magie.

  La double médaillée d’or olympique et l’héroïne de 2014 en prolongation a marqué avec 49 secondes à écouler en troisième période pour permettre aux Rouges de battre les Noirs 2-1 au premier duel du Festival d’automne de l’équipe nationale féminine du Canada, mercredi soir.

  Le tir de Poulin décoché tout juste de l’intérieur de la ligne bleue a clairement battu Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, C.-B./ Université Princeton, ECAC) par-dessus le bloqueur, permettant aux Rouges de l’emporter après être revenus de l’arrière.

  Samantha Sutherland (Cochrane, Alb./Université de Boston, HE) a aussi compté pour les Rouges, alors que Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Calgary, LCHF) a été l’unique buteuse des Noirs.

  Après une journée de tests hors glace et de rencontres avec les médias et deux jours d’entraînement, les deux équipes étaient encore en phase de familiarisation avec leurs coéquipières. Au cours des 20 premières minutes, le jeu n’était pas entièrement synchronisé de part et d’autre.

  Après une série de passes manquées de justesse, les Noirs ont cassé la glace à 8 min 20 s, lorsque Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man./Université du Dakota du Nord, WCHA) a dirigé une passe en provenance de la bande jusqu’au haut de l’enclave où Bram a battu Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, LCHF) d’un tir bas du côté du bâton.

  Les Rouges ont eu de la misère à se mettre en marche, attendant jusqu’à 8 min 59 s pour enregistrer un premier tir au but. Cependant, la formation est sortie en deuxième période en démontrant plus d’intensité, dictant davantage le rythme, mais sans tromper la vigilance d’Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Qc/Université du Wisconsin, WCHA).

  À mi-chemin en période médiane, les deux troupes ont procédé à un changement de gardienne de but. Newell a pris la place de Desbiens chez les Noirs, alors qu’Erica Howe (Orléans, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) est venue en relève à Lacasse pour les Rouges.

  Les Rouges n’ont attendu que 24 secondes avant de souhaiter la bienvenue à Newell, Sutherland battant la cerbère à peine réchauffée pour créer l’égalité 1-1. 

  Lacasse et Howe ont obtenu un total combiné de 17 arrêts dans la victoire. Desbiens et Newell ont bloqué 15 rondelles dans une cause perdante.

  Les matchs intraéquipes se poursuivront jeudi soir, alors que les Rouges affronteront les Blancs. Le duel est prévu à 19 h HR au Markin MacPhail Centre de WinSport du Parc olympique du Canada.
