LATE GOAL SENDS CANADA TO SECOND LOSS AT DEUTSCHLAND CUP

MUNICH, Germany – A Zach Hamill (Vancouver, B.C./HPK Hämeenlinna, FIN) goal late in the second period was all the offence Canada’s National Men’s Team could muster as it dropped a 2-1 decision to Switzerland on Saturday at the 2014 Deutschland Cup.
After Canada’s tournament-opening loss to Slovakia on Friday, and with Germany’s win over the Slovaks earlier Saturday, the Canadians needed a regulation time victory over the Swiss to keep their hopes alive.
But with the game tied 1-1 in the final minute, Team Canada coach Jeff Tomlinson called goaltender Chris Mason (Red Deer, Alta./Augsberg, GER) to the bench, and Dino Wieser found the unprotected cage to give the Swiss the victory and take Canada out of championship contention.
Despite outshooting Switzerland 17-7 in the opening period, Canada headed to the dressing room down a goal after 20 minutes thanks to Samuel Walser, who beat Mason just past the 11-minute mark.
The Canadians had their chances, aided by four Swiss penalties in the first 26 minutes, but it took until the 14:32 mark of the second period, when Jared Aulin (Calgary, Alta./Örebro HK, SWE) and Liam Reddox (Whitby, Ont./Växjö, SWE) set up Hamill, for Canada to draw even.
But that would be the lone puck to beat Sandro Zurkirchen, who was spectacular in a 36-save performance.
The best Canada can hope for now is to play spoiler when it takes on host Germany in its tournament finale on Sunday (10:45 a.m. ET/7:45 a.m. PT).

MUNICH, Allemagne – Le but de Zach Hamill (Vancouver, C.-B./HPK de Hämeenlinna, FIN) en fin de deuxième période a été le seul que l’offensive de l’équipe nationale masculine du Canada a su produire dans sa défaite de 2-1 aux mains de la Suisse, samedi à la Coupe Deutschland 2014.
À la suite de la défaite du Canada lors de son match d’ouverture vendredi aux mains de la Slovaquie et de la victoire de l’Allemagne sur les Slovaques plus tôt samedi, les Canadiens devaient battre la Suisse en temps réglementaire pour garder espoir de remporter le championnat.
Mais, alors que le pointage était égal 1-1 au cours de la dernière minute du match, l’entraîneur-chef d’Équipe Canada, Jeff Tomlinson, a rappelé le gardien de but Chris Mason (Red Deer, Alb./Augsberg, GER) au banc, et Dino Wieser a marqué dans un filet désert pour donner la victoire aux Suisses et éliminer le Canada de la lutte pour le championnat.
Malgré le fait qu’il a dominé la Suisse 17-7 au chapitre des tirs au but au premier tiers, le Canada s’est retiré à son vestiaire avec un retard d’un but auprès 20 minutes de jeu puisque Samuel Walser avait déjoué Mason peu après la 11e minute de jeu.
Les Canadiens ont eu des occasions de marquer, notamment grâce aux quatre punitions imposées aux Suisses au cours des 26 premières minutes, mais il aura fallu attendre à 14 min 32 s de la deuxième période pour voir
Jared Aulin (Calgary, Alb./Örebro HK, SWE) et Liam Reddox (Whitby, Ont./Växjö, SWE) préparé le jeu pour Hamill qui a nivelé la marque pour le Canada.
Ce fut la seule rondelle à déjouer Sandro Zurkirchen qui a été spectaculaire devant son filet, réalisant 36 arrêts.
La seule chose que le Canada peut maintenant espérer est de jouer le trouble-fête lorsqu’il affrontera son hôte, l’Allemagne, à son dernier match du tournoi, dimanche (10 h 45 HE/7 h 45 HP).
