  JENNER’S SHOOTOUT WINNER CLINCHES 4 NATIONS CUP FOR CANADA

  KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) scored the only goal of the shootout as Canada defeated the United States 3-2 to win the 2014 4 Nations Cup.

  A late addition to the roster, Jenner rifled a backhand high stick side on Canada’s second shot of the shootout to give her country its 14 title gold medal at the event.

  Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./IK Guts, Sweden) scored both Canadian goals in regulation. Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Brampton, CWHL), Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont./Boston, CWHL), Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) and Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) added the assists.

  Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, CWHL) made 33 saves in the win.

  Brianne Decker and Hilary Knight scored for the United States. Molly Schaus stopped 26 of 28 shots in net.

  More than 5,800 fans filled the Interior Savings Centre Saturday night to see the latest chapter in the sport’s best rivalry.

  A mad scramble in front of the Canadian crease in the opening 30 seconds set the tone early. Physical play by both sides led to three penalties being called in the opening six minutes.

  An up-tempo opening 20 minutes saw its first goal almost 16 minutes in. A mere 12 seconds after Megan Keller took a seat for hooking, Wakefield tipped Watchorn’s point shot top corner.

  The ice was still wet for the start of the second period when Decker equalized for the Americans. Her wrist shot from the face-off dot beat Lacasse low far side.

  Knight gave the Americans the lead just over eight minutes later when she got sprung on a breakaway from just outside the blue line.

  A late goal gave the momentum back to Canada heading into the second intermission. Spooner sent a pass from the boards out to the face-off circle, where Wakefield spun and scored her second of the night.

  Canada nearly won it in regulation, when Spooner put a loose puck in from the low slot. A quick whistle brought the goal back.

  And Alex Carpenter twice came close to ending it in overtime for the United States. Three minutes in her backhand was saved by the post; seven minutes later Lacasse stoned the American captain on a partial breakaway.

  KAMLOOPS, C.-B. – Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Université Cornell, ECAC) a compté le seul but en tirs de barrage et le Canada a défait les États-Unis 3-2 pour gagner la Coupe des 4 nations 2014.

  Un ajout de dernière minute à la formation, Jenner, a logé un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure du côté du bâton sur le deuxième essai du Canada en tirs de barrage, permettant à son pays de gagner une 14e médaille d’or à l’événement.

  Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./IK Guts, Suède) a marqué les deux buts du Canada. Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Brampton, LCHF), Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont./Boston, LCHF), Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, LCHF) et Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) ont obtenu une aide.

  Une mêlée devant le filet canadien lors des 30 premières minutes a donné le ton. Trois punitions ont été imposées lors des six premières minutes en raison du jeu physique des deux côtés.

  Après environ 16 minutes de jeu au cours d’une période âprement disputée, un premier filet a été inscrit. Près de 12 secondes après le début de la punition de Megan Keller pour avoir accroché, Wakefield a redirigé la frappe de la pointe de Watchorn.

  Dès le début du deuxième tiers, Decker a remis les pendules à l’heure. Son tir des poignets du cercle de mise au jeu a permis de battre Lacasse bas du côté rapproché.

  Knight a donné l’avance aux Américaines seulement huit minutes plus tard lorsqu’elle s’est échappée.

  Un but tardif a permis au Canada de revenir dans le match avant le deuxième entracte. Spooner a poussé la rondelle contre la bande à la hauteur du cercle de mise au jeu, où Wakefield a inscrit son deuxième.

  Le Canada a failli confirmer sa victoire en temps réglementaire lorsque Spooner a touché la cible, mais un coup de sifflet a empêché la concrétisation de ce but.

  Alex Carpenter est venue près deux fois de mettre fin au match en prolongation pour les États-Unis. À la troisième minute, son tir du revers a touché le poteau. Sept minutes plus tard, Lacasse a frustré la capitaine américaine lors d’une échappée partielle.
