  CANADIAN COMEBACK FALLS ONE-GOAL SHORT IN SPENGLER CUP SEMIFINAL

  DAVOS, Switzerland – Canada’s National Men’s Team twice turned a five-goal deficit into a one-goal game in the third period, but dropped a 6-5 decision to HC Genève-Servette in Tuesday’s semifinals at the 2014 Spengler Cup.

  It’s the second year in a row Canada has lost to the Swiss side in the semifinals, by the same score.

  Mike Hedden (Dunnville, Ont./Ässät Pori, FIN), Ryan Parent (Sioux Lookout, Ont./St. John’s, AHL), Jérôme Samson (Greenfield Park, Que./Syracuse, AHL), Alexandre Giroux (Quebec City, Que./HC Ambri-Piotta, SUI) and Marc-Antoine Pouliot (Quebec City, Que./HC Fribourg-Gottéron, SUI) had the Canadian goals.

  Canada trailed 5-0 at the 10:25 mark of the second period, but scored three times before the end of the middle frame to make a big dent in the HC Genève-Servette lead, and got to within one at 5-4 and 6-5 in the third period.

  Inti Pestoni got the defending champions on the board first at 8:10, stepping out from behind the net and beating Canadian goaltender Drew MacIntyre (Charlottetown, P.E.I./Charlotte, AHL), and Tom Pyatt batted in the 2-0 goal in the final minute of the opening period.

  HC Genève-Servette turned it on in the second period, scoring three times in 3:39 – from Romain Loeffel on the power play, Francis Boullion at even strength and Timothy Kast shorthanded – to open up a seemingly-commanding 5-0 lead.

  Boullion’s goal meant the end of the night for MacIntyre, who gave up four goals in 23 shots.

  Hedden got the Canadian comeback started just 29 seconds after Kast’s goal, beating HC Genève-Servette netminder Janick Schwendener just one second after a power play ended to make it 5-1.

  Parent hammered a point shot past Schwendener at 16:03, and Samson spun at the top of the crease and went five-hole in the last minute of the period to cut the Swiss lead to 5-3 after two periods.

  The Canadian power play struck just 1:39 into the third period, with Giroux getting his fourth goal in as many games, but Loeffel’s second on a HC Genève-Servette man advantage restored the two-goal lead at 5:19.

  Pouliot made it a one-goal game again at 10:42, but Canada would get no closer.

  Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask./SC Bern, SUI) stopped eight of the 10 shots he faced in relief of MacIntyre.

  HC Genève-Servette, which will look for back-to-back championships when it faces Salavat Yulaev Ufa in Wednesday’s championship game (6 a.m. ET/3 a.m. PT, LIVE on TSN), outshot Canada 33-31.

  LE CANADA RÉUSSIT PRESQUE SA REMONTÉE EN DEMI-FINALE À LA COUPE SPENGLER

  DAVOS, Suisse – L’équipe nationale masculine du Canada a transformé un déficit de cinq buts en un écart d’un seul but en troisième période, mais s’incline 6-5 devant le HC de Genève-Servette en demi-finale, mardi, à la Coupe Spengler 2014.  

  C’est la deuxième année de suite que le Canada perd aux mains de la formation suisse en demi-finale, et ce, par la même marque.

  Mike Hedden (Dunnville, Ont./Ässät Pori, FIN), Ryan Parent (Sioux Lookout, Ont./St. John’s, AHL), Jérôme Samson (Greenfield Park, Qc/Syracuse, AHL), Alexandre Giroux (Québec, Qc/HC d’Ambri-Piotta, SUI) et Marc-Antoine Pouliot (Québec, Qc/HC de Fribourg-Gottéron, SUI) ont marqué pour le Canada.

  Le Canada tirait de l’arrière 5-0 à 10 min 25 s de la deuxième période, mais il a marqué trois fois avant la fin de celle-ci pour gruger considérablement l’avance du HC de Genève-Servette avant de réduire l’écart à 5-4 et à 6-5 au troisième tiers.  

  Inti Pestoni a ouvert la marque pour les champions en titre à 8 min 10 s en s’avançant de l’arrière du filet pour déjouer le gardien de but canadien Drew MacIntyre (Charlottetown, Î.-P.-É./Charlotte, AHL). Tom Pyatt a ensuite frappé la rondelle dans les airs pour doubler l’avance des Suisses à 2-0 au cours de la dernière minute du premier tiers.  

  Le HC de Genève-Servette a explosé en deuxième période, marquant trois fois en 3 min 39 s – des buts de Romain Loeffel en avantage numérique, Francis Boullion à forces égales et Timothy Kast en désavantage numérique – pour se donner une avance supposément insurmontable de 5-0.

  Le but de Boullion a chassé MacIntyre de son poste après qu’il a accordé quatre buts en 23 tirs.

  Hedden a amorcé la remontée canadienne seulement 29 secondes après le but de Kast, déjouant le gardien de but du HC de Genève-Servette, Janick Schwendener, une seconde après la fin de l’avantage numérique. La marque était maintenant de 5-1.  

  Parent a ensuite déjoué Schwendener d’un puissant tir de la pointe à 16 min 3 s, puis Samson a pivoté sur lui-même au haut de l’enceinte avant de tirer la rondelle entre les jambières du gardien pour réduire l’avance des Suisses à 5-3 après quarante minutes de jeu.

  L’unité canadienne affectée à l’avantage numérique a fait mouche à 1 min 39 s au troisième tiers lorsque Giroux a marqué son quatrième en autant de matchs, mais le deuxième but de Loeffel pendant une supériorité numérique a rétabli l’avance de deux buts de Genève-Servette à 5 min 19 s.

  Pouliot a de nouveau réduit l’écart à un but à 10 min 42 s, mais le Canada n’a pu faire mieux.

  Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask./SC de Berne, SUI) a bloqué huit des 10 tirs qu’il a affrontés après avoir remplacé MacIntyre.

  Le HC de Genève-Servette, qui tentera de remporter un deuxième championnat de suite lorsqu’il affrontera le Salavat Yulaev d’Oufa lors du match de championnat, mercredi (6 h HE/3 h HP, EN DIRECT sur TSN), a eu le dessus 33-31 sur le Canada au chapitre des tirs au but.
