  BAST’S SHOOTOUT WINNER GIVES CHIEFS THIRD PLACE

  RED DEER, Alta. – Carley Wlad (Red Deer, Alta.) scored with 1:25 left in regulation and Mairead Bast (Red Deer, Alta.) had the only goal of the shootout as the Red Deer Chiefs defeated the Central Plains Capitals Thursday night and clinched third place heading into the 2015 Esso Cup playoffs.

  The Capitals will play the Sudbury Lady Wolves in one semifinal on Friday (3:30 p.m. MT), while the Chiefs will meet the Saskatoon Stars in the other (7 p.m. MT).

  Until Wlad put Skylar Colonna’s (Red Deer, Alta.) centering pass in the back of the net the Chiefs hadn’t shown the fight they had in their first four games. The team managed only 11 shots through the first two periods and didn’t register its first shot of the third until 15:07 had been played.

  Both teams, in fact, played a choppy game and were in danger of collaborating to break the record for fewest combined shots on goal. Their 40 shots exceeded the record set by the Calgary Flyers and Edmonton Thunder in 2009 by two, but they played five more minutes than the two Alberta teams did in the first Esso Cup.

  With this year’s Thunder losing earlier in the day, the Chiefs and Capitals clinched the last two playoff berths. The only thing left to decide was where each team would finish and who each would play.

  The Capitals’ top line gave it an early lead. Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.) drove toward the goal line, and just before going behind the net dished out front to Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.).

  The team doubled its lead 1:41 into the second, when Tamara McVannel’s (MacGregor, Man.) shot from just outside the top of the face-off circle trickled in.

  Central Plains’ failure to capitalize on two early power play opportunities in the third came back to haunt it with less than five minutes to go in regulation.

  After Abagael Thiessen (Red Deer, Alta.) held the puck in at the blue line, she danced around one defender, used another as a screen and picked the corner to finally put Red Deer on the board.

  That gave the Chiefs the kick they needed, setting the scene for Wlad’s heroics minutes later and sending Central Plains to its second shootout of the week.

  Sarah Murray (Calgary, Alta.) made 20 saves and picked up her third win of the week.

  Kathleen Kosior (Winnipeg, Man.) faced 18 shots in her second start at the Esso Cup.

  RED DEER, Alb. – Carley Wlad (Red Deer, Alb.) a compté avec 1 min 25 s à faire en temps réglementaire et Mairead Bast (Red Deer, Alb.) a été l’unique marqueuse en tirs de barrage, alors que les Chiefs de Red Deer ont défait les Capitals de Central Plains jeudi soir, confirmant leur troisième place à l’aube de la ronde éliminatoire de la Coupe Esso 2015.

  Les Capitals affronteront les Lady Wolves de Sudbury en demi-finale vendredi (15 h 30 HR), alors que les Chiefs croiseront le fer avec les Stars de Saskatoon dans l’autre (19 h HR).

  Jusqu’à ce que Wlad dirige la passe centrée de Skylar Colonna (Red Deer, Alb.) dans le fond du filet, les Chiefs n’avaient pas démontré la même combativité qu’au cours des quatre premières parties. L’équipe n’a dirigé que 11 tirs au filet au cours des deux premières périodes et a obtenu son premier tir de la troisième seulement après 15 min 07 s de jeu.

  Les deux formations ont joué un match chancelant et ont failli battre le record du plus petit total combiné de tirs au but. Leurs 40 tirs ont permis de battre le record des Flyers de Calgary et du Thunder d’Edmonton en 2009 par deux, mais elles ont joué cinq minutes de plus que les deux équipes albertaines à la première Coupe Esso.    

  Le Thunder a perdu plus tôt aujourd’hui, ce qui confirmait la place des Chiefs et des Capitals en troisième et quatrième position en vue de la ronde éliminatoire. La seule chose qu’il restait à décider, c’était à quel rang ces deux équipes allaient terminer.

  Le meilleur trio des Capitals a frappé dès le début du match. Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.) a foncé vers le filet et a passé le disque à Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.) avant d’aller en arrière du filet.

  L’équipe a doublé son avance après 1 min 41 s de jeu au deuxième tiers, lorsque le tir de Tamara McVannel (MacGregor, Man.) décoché du haut du cercle de mise au jeu a pénétré dans le filet.

  Central Plains n’a pu faire mouche lors de deux jeux de puissance en début de troisième période, ce qui les a hanté avec moins de cinq minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire.

  Abagael Thiessen (Red Deer, Alb.) s’est retrouvée avec la rondelle à la ligne bleue, a déjoué une défenseure, en a utilisé une autre comme écran et a tiré dans le coin avant d’inscrire Red Deer au pointage.

  Cela a donné l’élan nécessaire aux Chiefs, mettant la table pour le moment de gloire de Wlad, qui a permis à Central Plains de jouer pour la deuxième fois en tirs de barrage cette semaine.

  Sarah Murray (Calgary, Alb.) a effectué 20 arrêts, signant une troisième victoire cette semaine.

  Kathleen Kosior (Winnipeg, Man.) a reçu 18 tirs à son deuxième départ à la Coupe Esso.
