  SUDBURY SHUTS OUT CENTRAL PLAINS, ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

  RED DEER, Alta. – At the 2014 Esso Cup the Sudbury Lady Wolves looked up at the end of their semifinal, saw the scoreboard read 3-0 and could only hang their heads.

  Fast-forward one year minus a day later and that same score line now shined over them.

  Carley Olivier (Sudbury, Ont.), Kailey Lapensee (Sudbury, Ont.) and Tayler Murphy (Sudbury, Ont.) provided the offence as the Lady Wolves defeated the Central Plains Capitals 3-0 Friday afternoon.

  For the nine returning players, they hope to ride the momentum of a semifinal shutout to a gold medal at the Esso Cup, just like the Weyburn Gold Wings did last year.

  Danika Ranger (North Bay, Ont.), named the tournament’s Top Goaltender earlier in the day, stopped 23 shots to earn the shutout and pick up her fourth win of the week.

  What decided this game were special teams. Clicking at a rate of 26 percent, the Lady Wolves’ power play had been the event’s most successful during the preliminary round. The Capitals’ penalty kill had allowed only one goal in 18 man-disadvantages. Sudbury connected twice in the second period, doubling what Central Plains had allowed in five games in just over 12 minutes.

  Three minutes after play resumed Olivier slowly walked around her defender and let a wrist shot fly from the bottom of the face-off circle, beating Lauren Taraschuk (Winnipeg, Man.) high short side.

  Just past the 15-minute mark Sudbury doubled its lead. A puck shot in from the side boards found its way to the crease. With Taraschuk obstructed by her own teammate pinning her opponent on her, Lapensee had the whole net to shoot in to.

  Easily the week’s top offensive team – with 22 goals and +15 goal differential – what tended to get lost in the conversation was how good the Sudbury defence had been. While the Capitals allowed the fewest goals during the preliminary round (nine), the Lady Wolves surrendered only one more.

  The shot count read 23-20 in favour of Central Plains, but numbers can be deceiving. The Lady Wolves never really allowed the Capitals the chance to make a game of it.

  With still more than 12 minutes to go, Central Plains shortened its bench, seemingly sending its top line of Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.), Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.) and Mekaela Fisher (Warren, Ont.) over the boards every other shift.

  The Capitals pulled Taraschuk with just over three minutes to go, but the only goal scored was by Murphy into an open net.

  The gold medal game goes Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. MT). Central Plains will play for bronze earlier in the day (12 p.m. MT).

  RED DEER, Alb. – Après leur demi-finale à la Coupe Esso 2014, les Lady Wolves de Sudbury ont levé les yeux vers le tableau indicateur, ont vu la marque de 3-0, et ont baissé la tête.

  Un an moins un jour plus tard, le tableau indicateur indique le même résultat, mais cette fois-ci, elles gardent la tête haute.

  Carley Olivier (Sudbury, Ont.), Kailey Lapensee (Sudbury, Ont.) et Tayler Murphy (Sudbury, Ont.) ont fourni l’offensive qui a permis aux Lady Wolves de vaincre les Capitals de Central Plains 3-0, vendredi après-midi. 

  Les neuf joueuses de retour cette année espèrent poursuivre l’élan que ce jeu blanc en demi-finale leur a fourni pour entreprendre le match pour l’or à la Coupe Esso, tout comme l’ont fait les Gold Wings de Weyburn l’an dernier.

  Danika Ranger (North Bay, Ont.), nommée Meilleure gardienne de but du tournoi plus tôt dans la journée, a bloqué 23 tirs pour réussir le jeu blanc et sa quatrième victoire du tournoi.

  Les unités spéciales ont été l’histoire du match. Affichant un taux d’efficacité de 26 pour cent, le jeu des Lady Wolves en supériorité numérique avait été le meilleur du tournoi en ronde préliminaire. Le jeu des Capitals en désavantage numérique n’avait accordé qu’un but en 18 infériorités numériques. Sudbury a marqué deux fois en un peu plus de 12 minutes en deuxième période, doublant ainsi le nombre de buts accordés par Central Plains à leurs cinq matchs.

  Trois minutes après le début de période médiane, Oliver a lentement contourné une défenseure et a décoché un tir du poignet du bas du cercle de mise au jeu pour déjouer Lauren Taraschuk (Winnipeg, Man.) d’un tir haut du côté court.

  Puis, peu après la 15e minute, Sudbury a doublé son avance. Une rondelle provenant de la bande sur le côté s’est retrouvée dans l’enclave. Alors que Taraschuk avait la vue voilée par une de ses coéquipières, Lapensee s’est trouvée devant un filet béant et elle n’a pas raté l’occasion.

  Sudbury a offert la meilleure offensive de la semaine – 22 buts et un différentiel de +15 –, mais les gens ont semblé oublier qu’elle avait aussi une très bonne défensive. Les Capitals avaient accordé le moins de buts en ronde préliminaire – neuf –, mais les Lady Wolves n’en avaient accordé qu’un de plus.

  Le tableau des tirs au but indiquait 23-20 pour Central Plains, mais les chiffres ne disent pas tout. Les Lady Wolves n’ont jamais vraiment permis aux Capitals de revenir dans le match.

  Alors qu’il restait plus de 12 minutes à jouer dans la rencontre, Central Plains a raccourci son banc, déléguant son meilleur trio formé de Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.), Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.) et Mekaela Fisher (Warren, Ont.) sur la glace à toutes les deux présences.

  Les Capitals ont retiré Taraschuk alors qu’il restait un peu plus de trois minutes au chronomètre, mais le seul but qui a été marqué a été celui de Murphy dans un filet désert.
  Le match pour la médaille d’or aura lieu samedi après-midi (15 h 30 HR). Central Plains jouera pour le bronze plus tôt dans la journée (12 h HR).
