  FIVE PLAYERS SCORE, MUSTANGS BEAT THUNDERBIRDS FOR FIRST RBC CUP WIN

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – The Melfort Mustangs scored three times in less than two minutes in the first half of the first period to take an early lead, and held off a third-period push to earn a 5-3 win over the Soo Thunderbirds in Monday’s lone game at the 2015 RBC Cup.

  The victory is the first of the tournament for the Mustangs, who jumped into a three-way tie for second place at 1-1 with the Penticton Vees and Portage Terriers as the preliminary round reached the halfway mark.

  Adam Fauchoux, Regan Wilton and Eric Young scored for Melfort in a span of 1:54 in the first period, while Travis Mayan and Dexter Bricker added goals in the second.

  Owen Headrick scored twice and Matt Caruso added one for Soo, which dropped to 0-2.

  Both coming off shutout losses in their tournament openers, the Mustangs and Thunderbirds came out firing in search of an early goal, and Fauchoux got it for Melfort at 6:39 when he took a pass in the slot from David Heath and snapped a shot past Soo goaltender Brian Kment.

  Wilton doubled the lead just 16 seconds later, and Young beat Kment up top from a sharp angle at 8:33 to make it 3-0 and chase Kment, who gave up three goals on 10 shots.

  Mario Culina went the rest of the way for the Thunderbirds, stopping 20 of 22.

  Mayan, the runaway scoring leader in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this season, scored his first goal in nine games for a 4-0 advantage just 1:57 into the second period; he last found the back of the net in Game 3 of the SJHL final on April 15.

  Headrick finally got the first goal of the tournament for Soo at 4:39 of the middle frame, but Bricker converted a tap-in after hard work down low by Dakota Boutin to restore the four-goal lead after 40 minutes.

  The Thunderbirds managed just four shots in the third period (and 19 overall) but made good on two of them to get within a pair and add a little excitement to the final minutes.

  Caruso scored the 5-2 goal five minutes into the period, showing off his quick hands in close before slipping a shot under Melfort goaltender Richard Palmer, and Headrick’s shot from the point made its way through traffic and past Palmer to cap the scoring at 12:41.

  Melfort will watch from the sidelines Tuesday before facing the Carleton Place Canadians on Wednesday night (7 p.m. CT), while the Thunderbirds are back on the ice at the PCU Centre on Tuesday night to face the host Portage Terriers (7 p.m. CT).

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Les Mustangs de Melfort ont marqué trois fois en moins de deux minutes dans la première moitié du premier tiers pour prendre une rapide avance et ont freiné une poussée des Thunderbirds de Soo en troisième période pour signer une victoire de 5-3 dans le seul match à l’horaire lundi à la Coupe RBC 2015.

  Ce gain est le premier du tournoi des Mustangs qui sont maintenant à égalité avec les Vees de Penticton et les Terriers de Portage au deuxième rang avec une fiche de 1-1, alors que la première moitié de la ronde préliminaire est complétée.

  Adam Fauchoux, Regan Wilton et Eric Young ont touché la cible pour Melfort en l’espace de 1 min 54 s au premier vingt, alors que Travis Mayan et Dexter Bricker ont compté en période médiane.

  Owen Headrick a inscrit un doublé et Matt Caruso a marqué une fois pour Soo, qui a maintenant une fiche de 0-2.

  Les deux équipes ayant subi un revers par jeu blanc en lever de rideau, les Mustangs et les Thunderbirds étaient à la recherche d’un but rapide. Fauchoux a réussi pour Melfort à 6 min 39 s quand il a accepté une passe dans l’enclave de David Heath pour battre le cerbère de Soo, Brian Kment.

  Wilton a doublé l’avance des siens 16 secondes plus tard et Young a trompé la vigilance de Kment d’un angle restreint à 8 min 33 s pour porter le compte à 3-0 et chasser le gardien de but du match après avoir accordé trois buts sur 10 tirs.

  Mario Culina a complété la partie pour les Thunderbirds, bloquant 20 des 22 rondelles dirigées vers lui.

  Mayan, le meilleur pointeur de la Ligue de hockey junior de la Saskatchewan cette saison, a inscrit son premier filet en neuf rencontres pour procurer une avance de 4-0 à son équipe après seulement 1 min 57 s en deuxième période. Son dernier but remontait au match no 3 de la finale de la SJHL le 15 avril.

  Headrick a finalement cassé la glace dans ce tournoi pour Soo à 4 min 39 s du deuxième vingt, mais Bricker a logé le disque dans le filet après un bel effort de Dakota Boutin dans le fond de la zone pour redonner une priorité de quatre buts à sa formation avant de retraiter au vestiaire.

  Les Thunderbirds n’ont obtenu que quatre tirs au but en troisième période (et 19 au total), mais ont produit sur deux d’entre eux pour se rapprocher à deux buts et créer de l’excitation pour les dernières minutes.

  À la cinquième minute du troisième tiers, Caruso a réduit l’écart à 5-2, mettant en valeur ses mains rapides avant de glisser la rondelle sous le portier de Melfort, Richard Palmer, et le tir de Headrick de la pointe a fait son chemin dans la circulation lourde pour battre Palmer, le dernier filet de la rencontre, à 12 min 41 s.

  Melfort sera au repos mardi avant de croiser le fer avec les Canadians de Carleton Place mercredi soir (19 h HC), alors que les Thunderbirds retourneront sur la glace du PCU Centre mardi soir face à l’équipe hôte des Terriers de Portage (19 h HC).
