  NEWELL’S FOUR POINTS HELP VEES TO PRELIM-ENDING WIN AT RBC CUP

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Patrick Newell scored twice and added two assists to power the Penticton Vees to a 5-2 win over the Soo Thunderbirds in the preliminary round finale for both teams Thursday at the 2015 RBC Cup.

  The victory pushes Penticton into first place, depending on the outcome of Thursday night’s Portage-Melfort game; a win in regulation by the host Terriers will leave them first and drop the Vees to second place, but any other result will give Penticton top spot heading into Saturday’s semifinals.

  Steen Cooper, Tyson Jost and Dakota Conroy scored the other goals for the Vees, who won three in a row to finish the round robin after a tournament-opening loss to Portage on Saturday afternoon.

  Demico Hannoun added three assists, while Cooper had a goal and a helper.

  Brett Jeffries had both goals for Soo, which finished without a win in four games and saw its season end.

  Penticton scored the lone goal of the first period; Cooper stripped a Thunderbirds defenceman in the neutral zone and broke in alone, going to the backhand to beat Soo goaltender Mario Culina at 7:28.

  Newell needed just 1:28 of the second period to double the lead, slamming on the brakes at the face-off dot and snapping a shot past Culina, and finished off gorgeous tic-tac-toe passing on a Vees power play at 6:23, with Cooper and Connor Chartier providing the assists.

  Jeffries pulled the Thunderbirds back within two at the 13-minute mark of the middle frame, taking advantage of a turnover at the Penticton blue-line and going five-hole on netminder Hunter Miska.

  He then added a second just 88 seconds into the third period, tipping in a Caleb Boman point shot to make it a one-goal game.

  But Jost buried a feed from Newell on a Vees power play less than three minutes later, and Conroy finished off another ridiculous passing play on a two-man advantage at 16:45 to cap the scoring.

  Penticton will wait for its semifinal opponent, while Soo finishes a successful season with a 53-13-1-7 (W-L-T-OTL) record, a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League championship a Dudley Hewitt Cup title.

  Cette victoire place Penticton au sommet du classement, en attendant le résultat de la rencontre Portage-Melfort de jeudi soir; une victoire en temps règlementaire par les Terriers, les hôtes du tournoi, les placerait en première position et relèguerait les Vees au deuxième rang, mais tout autre résultat donnera à Penticton une place au sommet du classement en vue des demi-finales samedi.

  Steen Cooper, Tyson Jost et Dakota Conroy ont compté les autres buts des Vees, lesquels ont remporté trois matchs consécutifs pour terminer le tournoi à la ronde après une défaite en ouverture de tournoi aux mains de Portage samedi après-midi.

  Demico Hannoun a ajouté trois mentions d’aide, alors que Cooper a obtenu un but et une aide.

  Brett Jeffries a inscrit les deux buts de Soo, laquelle a terminé ses quatre matchs sans victoire, mettant ainsi fin à sa saison.

  Penticton a inscrit le seul but de la première période; Cooper a déjoué un défenseur des Thunderbirds en zone neutre pour ensuite entrer seul, effectuer un tir du poignet et battre le gardien de but de Soo, Mario Culina, à 7 min 28 s.

  Newell n’a eu besoin que d’une minute et vingt-huit secondes au deuxième vingt pour doubler l’avance, freinant soudainement au point de mise au jeu et décochant un tir derrière Culina, et il a mis la touche finale à un somptueux jeu de passes en tic-tac-toe lors d’un avantage numérique des Vees à 6 min 23 s, avec Cooper et Connor Chartier lui fournissant les aides.

  Jeffries a réduit l’écart à deux buts pour les Thunderbirds à la marque des 13 minutes du deuxième vingt, tirant profit d’un revirement de Penticton à la ligne bleue pour placer la rondelle entre les jambières du gardien de but Hunter Miska.

  Il en a ensuite ajouté un autre après seulement 88 secondes de jeu en troisième période en déviant un tir de la pointe de Caleb Boman; l’écart n’était plus que d’un but.

  Mais Jost a marqué après avoir capté une passe de Newell lors d’un avantage numérique des Vees moins de trois minutes plus tard, et Connor a terminé le travail à la suite d’un autre superbe jeu de passe lors d’un avantage de deux joueurs à 16 min 45 s, mettant un terme au pointage.

  Penticton devra attendre pour connaître qui sera sa rivale en demi-finale, alors que Soo conclut une saison réussie avec une fiche de 53-13-1-7 (V-D-N-DP), un Championnat de la Ligue de hockey junior du nord de l’Ontario et un titre à la Coupe Dudley-Hewitt.
