  LARSON SCORES IN OVERTIME, CANADIANS ADVANCE TO RBC CUP FINAL

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Jordan Larson scored 3:43 into double overtime, sending the Carleton Place Canadians back to the championship game at the RBC Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win over the Penticton Vees on Saturday afternoon.

  It’s the second consecutive trip to the final for the Canadians, who gave back a two-goal lead in the final three minutes and lost in overtime to the Yorkton Terriers last year.

  Early in the second extra period, Tyson Stewart kept the puck in at the Penticton blue-line before going cross-ice to Ryker Killins, whose low shot was kicked out by Vees goaltender Hunter Miska. Larson was Johnny-on-the-spot, knocking in the rebound to give the Canadians the thrilling victory.

  Stephen Baylis had the lone Carleton Place goal in regulation time, while Tyson Jost replied for Penticton.

  The game was a goaltending duel from the first puck drop, with Miska and Carleton Place netminder Guillaume Therien going save for save in the first 20 minutes, combining for 17 stops.

  Jost finally broke through just past the six-minute mark of the second period, outmuscling a Canadians defender in front of Therien and banging in the rebound of a Connor Chartier for a 1-0 lead.

  Baylis equalized for Carleton Place at 17:55 of the middle frame, taking advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone and absolutely wiring a wrist shot over Miska’s glove to tie the game after two periods.

  The goaltenders took over from there; both Miska and Therien made 18 saves in the third period and first overtime combined, helping get the game to a second extra period before Larson’s winner.

  Penticton thought it had the winner midway through the first overtime when a shot snuck through Therien and trickled over the goal line, but the whistle had blown before the puck entered the net.

  Final shots on goal favoured Carleton Place, 40-37.

  The game was just the 11th semifinal to go to overtime since the start of the five-team format in 1990, and was the first to reach a second overtime since Prince George beat Camrose in the longest game in tournament history, a five-overtime classic in 2007.

  LARSON COMPTE EN PROLONGATION ET LES CANADIANS AVANCENT EN FINALE DE LA COUPE RBC

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba – Jordan Larson a compté à 3 min 43 s en deuxième période de prolongation, envoyant à nouveau les Canadians de Carleton Place au match de championnat de la Coupe RBC avec une victoire de 2-1 aux dépens des Vees de Penticton, samedi après-midi.

  C’est le deuxième périple consécutif en finale pour les Canadians, qui avaient laissé filer une avance de deux buts dans les trois dernières minutes et perdu en prolongation contre les Terriers de Yorkton l’an passé.

  Tôt en deuxième période de prolongation, Tyson Stewart a gardé la rondelle à la ligne bleue de Penticton avant de diriger une passe qui a traversé la glace vers Ryler Killins, dont le tir bas a été rabroué par le gardien de but des Vees Hunter Miska. Larson était au poste et a percuté le rebond pour donner aux Canadians cette enlevante victoire.

  Stephen Baylis a inscrit le seul but de Carleton Place en temps réglementaire, alors que Tyson Jost a répliqué pour Penticton.

  Le match a été un duel de gardiens de but dès la première mise au jeu, avec Miska et le gardien de but de Carleton Place Guillaume Therien allant d’arrêt en arrêt au cours du premier vingt, combinant à eux deux 17 arrêts.

  Jost a finalement réussi à tromper la vigilance du portier adverse un peu après la marque des six minutes en deuxième période en prenant le dessus sur le défenseur des Canadians devant Therien et en frappant le rebond d’un tir de Connor Chartier, menant à une avance de 1-0.

  Baylis a créé l’égalité pour Carleton Place à 17 min 55 s de la période médiane en tirant profit d’un revirement survenu en zone neutre et en décochant un tir du poignet au-dessus de la mitaine de Miska, nivelant ainsi le compte après deux périodes de jeu.

  Les cerbères ont dès lors pris le dessus; Miska et Therien ont bloqué à eux deux 18 tirs au troisième vingt et en première période de prolongation, entraînant le match en deuxième période de prolongation avant le but victorieux de Larson.

  Penticton semblait penser qu’elle avait marqué le but victorieux à mi-chemin de la première période de prolongation lorsqu’un de ses tirs se faufila au-delà de Therien en traversant lentement la ligne des buts; mais le sifflet s’était fait entendre avant que la rondelle ne pénètre dans le but.

  Le bilan des tirs au but a penché du côté de Carleton Place avec 40-37.

  Ce match de demi-finale n’était que le 11e à recourir à une période de prolongation depuis le début de la formule à cinq équipes en 1990 et il était le premier à nécessiter une deuxième période en prolongation depuis que Prince Albert avait battu Camrose lors du plus long match de l’histoire de ce tournoi, une rencontre ayant entraîné cinq périodes de prolongation en 2007.
