ROY’S HAT TRICK LEADS CANADA TO BIG WIN IN U18 WORLDS OPENER
JASON LA ROSE
ZUG, Switzerland – Jérémy Roy (Richelieu, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) had a hat trick – three of the six goals scored by defencemen – and Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team scored six unanswered goals in the second period to earn an 11-5 win over Latvia on Thursday in its opening game at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship.
It’s the first time Canada has scored 11 goals in a game at the world championship since an 11-3 win over Belarus in the preliminary round at the 2010 tournament in Minsk.
Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) added two goals for the Canadians, and Nicolas Roy (Amos, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL), Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL), Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C./Prince George, WHL), Kyle Capobianco (Mississauga, Ont./Sudbury, OHL), Guillaume Brisebois (St-Hilaire, Que./Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL) and Ethan Bear (Ochapowace, Sask./Seattle, WHL) had one apiece.
It was Latvia who led 3-2 after a back-and-forth first period, with Nicolas Roy and Jérémy Roy scoring to erase one-goal Canadian deficits before a late Latvian goal gave them the advantage after 20 minutes.
The offensive floodgates opened in the second period; Canada scored six times before the midway point of the middle frame.
Howden tied the game at 3:05, tipping a Thomas Chabot (Ste-Marie-de-Beauce, Que./Saint John, QMJHL) shot past Latvian netminder Denijs Romanosvkis, and Harkins finished a set-up from Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) just 69 seconds later to give Canada its first lead.
After Mareks Mitens replaced Romanovskis, Jérémy Roy redirected a Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) feed past the new goaltender for a 5-3 advantage, and Stephens made it 6-3 just 13 seconds later.
Capobianco banked a pass in off a Latvian defender just 58 seconds after Roy’s goal – bringing Romanovskis back into the game – and Brisebois cleaned up his own rebound at 9:54 to cap a wild spurt – six goals by six players in 6:49, and an 8-3 lead.
Jérémy Roy’s hat trick goal, on another pretty Barzal pass, highlighted the third period, in which the teams found the back of the net three times apiece. Stephens and Bear also scored in the final stanza.
In all, 15 of the 17 Canadian skaters recorded at least a point.
Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) picked up the victory in goal for Canada, making 16 saves.
Canada is back in action Saturday in Zug, taking on Switzerland in Group B action (12:45 p.m. ET/9:45 a.m. PT), live on TSN.
