  SAWCHENKO’S 43 SAVES HELP CANADA EDGE CZECHS AT U18 WORLDS

  ZUG, Switzerland – Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) stopped 43 of the 45 shots he faced, backstopping Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team to a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic on Sunday at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship.

  The win keeps Canada perfect through three games in Group B and sets up a first-place showdown with Finland in the preliminary round finale on Tuesday (9:45 a.m. ET/6:45 a.m. PT).

  Anthony Beauvillier (Sorel, Que./Shawinigan, QMJHL) scored twice, including the game-winner, and Parker Wotherspoon (Surrey, B.C./Tri-City, WHL) added one for Canada.

  Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) set up both of Beauvillier’s goals, and sits tied for the tournament scoring lead with Vili Saarijarvi of Finland; both have eight points through three games.

  The Czechs got the scoring started when Pavel Zacha slipped a shot through Sawchenko at the 6:21 mark of the first period, but Wotherspoon’s seeing-eye shot found its way through traffic and past goaltender Ales Stezka to tie the game 10 minutes later.

  Beauvillier gave Canada its first lead six minutes into the second period, taking a pass from Barzal and snapping a shot under the arm of Stezka, but Radek Koblizek capitalized on a turnover in the Canadian zone to bring the teams even again late in the middle frame.

  The Barzal-to-Beauvillier combination struck for a second time early in the third, with Beauvillier banging in his second of the game and third of the tournament on the power play to give Canada the lead for good.

  Sawchenko did the rest, stopping all 14 shots he faced in the final 20 minutes. He had 19 saves in the first period and 10 more in the second to record his second win in as many starts.

  The Czechs finished with a 45-39 advantage in shots on goal.

  ZOUG, Suisse– Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alb./Moose Jaw, WHL) a repoussé 43 des 45 rondelles dirigées vers lui, permettant à l’équipe nationale masculine des moins de 18 ans du Canada de battre la République tchèque dimanche au Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace des M18 2015 de l’IIHF.

  Avec ce gain, le Canada conserve une fiche parfaite après trois rencontres dans le groupe B, ce qui met la table pour un duel de la première place contre la Finlande à l’occasion de son dernier match de la ronde préliminaire mardi (9 h 45 HE/6 h 45 HP).

  Anthony Beauvillier (Sorel, Qc/Shawinigan, LHJMQ) a compté deux buts, dont celui de la victoire, et Parker Wotherspoon (Surrey, C.-B./Tri-City, WHL) a également touché la cible pour le Canada.

  Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, C.-B./Seattle, WHL) a préparé les deux filets de Beauvillier. Il occupe le premier rang des pointeurs du tournoi, à égalité avec le Finlandais Vili Saarijarvi, les deux ayant huit points en trois parties.

  Les Tchèques ont ouvert la marque quand Pavel Zacha a battu Sawchenko à 6 min 21 s du premier tiers, mais dix minutes plus tard, le tir précis de Wotherspoon a fait son chemin dans la circulation et trompé la vigilance du cerbère Ales Stezka pour niveler le pointage.

  Beauvillier a donné une première avance au Canada à la sixième minute de la période médiane, acceptant une passe de Barzal pour loger le disque sous le bras de Stezka, mais Radek Koblizek a profité d’un revirement en territoire canadien pour remettre les pendules à l’heure, peu de temps avant le deuxième entracte.

  La combinaison Barzal-Beauvillier a frappé pour une deuxième fois en début de troisième période, Beauvillier récoltant son deuxième de la partie et troisième du tournoi lors d’un avantage numérique. Le Canada n’a jamais regardé derrière par la suite.

  Sawchenko s’est occupé du reste, bloquant les 14 tirs dirigés vers lui au troisième vingt. Il a effectué 19 arrêts lors des 20 premières minutes et 10 autres au deuxième tiers, signant une deuxième victoire en autant de sorties.

  Les Tchèques ont dominé 45-39 au chapitre des tirs au but.
