  BRIDGES SCORES TWO MORE, CANADA BLANKS CZECHS AT SLEDGE WORLDS

  BUFFALO, N.Y. – Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) scored another two goals, leading Canada’s National Sledge Team to a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in the preliminary round finale for both on Wednesday at the 2015 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship.

  The win means Canada finishes the round robin atop Group A with a perfect 3-0 record, and will face Russia in Friday’s semifinals at HarborCenter (time to be determined). The U.S. faces Norway in the other semifinal.

  Bridges has scored Canada’s last four goals, and pulled even with frequent linemates Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) and Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) atop the tournament scoring race. Each has 10 points (Bridges: 7-3—10; Westlake: 6-4—10; Bowden: 3-7—10).

  Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) earned his third shutout in as many starts; he needed to make just three saves on Wednesday – one in the first period, one with 1:38 left and one with 0.4 seconds to go.

  Bridges got the scoring started at the 10:32 mark of the first period, taking a pass from Tyler McGregor (Forest, Ont.) and outwaiting Michal Vapenka before flicking a backhand past the Czech goaltender.

  Westlake had a glorious chance to double the lead; the Canadian captain was awarded a penalty shot just 14 seconds after Bridges’ goal after Jiri Berger handled the puck in his own crease, but his hard shot went wide.

  Both teams locked down defensively after that. A scoreless second period included just four shots on goal – all by the Canadians, leaving the Czechs with just a single shot through 30 minutes.

  Bridges finally gave Canada some insurance 10 minutes into the third, redirecting an Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) shot up and over Vapenka, who was spectacular at times in the Czech goal.

  The Canadians finished the preliminary round with nine more goals scored (24) than shots allowed (15).

  BUFFALO, N.Y. – Billy Bridges (Summerside, Î.-P.-É.) a marqué deux autres buts, menant l’équipe nationale sur luge du Canada à un gain de 2-0 contre la République tchèque au dernier match de la ronde préliminaire des deux équipes, mercredi, au Championnat mondial de hockey sur luge 2015 du CIP.

  Avec cette victoire, le Canada termine sa ronde préliminaire au sommet du groupe A avec une fiche immaculée de 3-0 et affrontera la Russie en demi-finale vendredi, au HarborCenter (heure à déterminer). Les Américains croiseront le fer avec les Norvégiens dans l’autre demi-finale.

  Bridges a inscrit les quatre derniers filets du Canada et se trouve à égalité au premier rang des pointeurs avec des partenaires fréquents de trio, soit Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) et Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.). Les trois joueurs ont 10 points (Bridges: 7-3—10; Westlake: 6-4—10; Bowden: 3-7—10).

  Westlake a eu une superbe chance de doubler l’avance des siens; le capitaine canadien s’est vu accorder un tir de punition seulement 14 secondes après le but de Bridges lorsque Jiri Berger a touché la rondelle avec sa main dans le demi-cercle de son gardien, mais son tir vif a raté la cible.

  Les deux formations ont fermé le jeu par la suite. Au cours de la deuxième période, seulement quatre tirs ont été dirigés vers le filet adverse, tous par les Canadiens, et aucun but n’a été enregistré. Après 30 minutes de jeu, les Tchèques n’avaient obtenu qu’un seul tir au filet.
