REGINA BLANKS CHÂTEAUGUAY, STAYS PERFECT AT TELUS CUP

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – Clarke Flegel stopped all 29 shots he faced, and Tyron Brown and Owen Sillinger each had a goal and an assist to lead the Regina Pat Canadians to a 5-0 win over the Grenadiers de Châteauguay on Tuesday afternoon at the 2015 TELUS Cup.

Riley Woods, Tylor Ludwar and Tyler Adams had the other goals for the Pat Canadians, who posted their second five-goal win in as many days; they beat Toronto 7-2 in Monday’s tournament opener.

Regina finished the first period outshot 18-8, but took a 3-0 advantage to the intermission.

Woods converted on a two-man advantage midway through the first, taking a pass from Sillinger and roofing a wrist shot over the glove of Châteauguay goaltender Kyle Jessiman.

Another five-on-three led to another goal just 77 seconds later; Ludwar’s point shot bounced off bodies in front before finding the back of the net, pushing the Regina lead to 2-0.

Brown rounded out the first period scoring with 1:28 left, beating Jessiman through the five-hole.

Flegel was at his best in the opening frame, making 18 of his 29 saves as the Grenadiers swarmed, trying to take an early lead and avoid attempting a second comeback in as many days.

The Pat Canadians added to their lead with the lone goal of a physical second period; Adams redirected a perfect back-door pass from Brown past Jessiman to make it a 4-0 game after 40 minutes.

Sillinger took sole possession of the tournament scoring lead with his goal late in the third period, giving him six points (three goals, three assists) in the first two games.

Regina managed two goals on 11 power play opportunities, including multiple two-man advantages, while the Grenadiers went without a goal on their five chances.

The final shots-on-goal tally favoured the West Region champions, 33-29.

Regina is the third team in the last 10 years to open Canada’s National Midget Championship with back-to-back wins by at least five goals, joining the 2006 Prince Albert Mintos and 2011 Vancouver NW Giants.

It looks to remain undefeated Wednesday when it takes on the Strathmore Bisons (4 p.m. ET), while Châteauguay will be on the ice at Centre Premier Tech for a matinee match-up against the Newbridge Academy Gladiators (noon ET).

Riley Woods, Tylor Ludwar et Tyler Adams ont inscrit les autres buts pour les Pat Canadians, lesquels ont affiché leur deuxième victoire par cinq buts en autant de jours; ils ont défait Toronto 7-2 au match d’ouverture du tournoi lundi.

Regina a fini la première période avec un bilan de tirs au but de 18-8 en sa faveur, mais a pris un avantage de 3-0 en se dirigeant à l’entracte.

Woods a profité d’un avantage numérique de deux joueurs à mi-chemin du premier vingt en interceptant une passe de Sillinger et en effectuant un tir du poignet juste au-dessus de la mitaine du gardien de but de Châteauguay Kule Jessiman.

Une autre supériorité, cette fois de cinq contre trois, a mené vers un autre but seulement 77 secondes plus tard; un tir de la pointe de Ludwar a rebondi sur des joueurs devant, avant de suivre sa route jusqu’au fond du filet, faisant grimper l’avance de Regina à 2-0.

Brown a conclu le pointage de la première période avec 1 min 28 s à écouler, en plaçant une rondelle entre les jambières de Jessiman.

Flegel a été à son meilleur en première période, effectuant 18 de ses 29 arrêts alors que les Grenadiers fourmillaient pour essayer de prendre une avance tôt en période et ainsi éviter de tenter un deuxième retour comme ce fut le cas les autres jours.

Les Pat Canadians ont renchéri leur avance avec le seul but marqué au cours d’une robuste deuxième période; Adams a fait dévier une passe arrière parfaite venant de Brown derrière Jessiman faisant passer le compte à 4-0 après quarante minutes de jeu.

Sillinger est devenu le meilleur pointeur du tournoi avec son but marqué vers la fin de la troisième période, cumulant six points (trois buts et trois mentions d’aide) lors de ses deux premières rencontres.

Regina a réussi à marquer deux buts au cours des 11 occasions en avantage numérique qui se sont offertes à elle, dont plusieurs avantages de deux joueurs, alors que les Grenadiers n’ont inscrit aucun but lors de leurs cinq occasions.

Le compte final des tirs au but a favorisé les champions de la région Ouest, 33-29.

Regina est la troisième équipe au cours des dix dernières années à avoir disputé le match d’ouverture du Championnat national midget du Canada avec des victoires consécutives remportées avec un écart de cinq buts, rejoignant ainsi les Mintos de Prince Albert en 2006 et les Giants de Vancouver NW en 2011.

Regina cherchera à rester invaincue mercredi lorsqu’elle se mesurera aux Bisons de Strathmore à 16 h HE, alors que Châteauguay sera de nouveau sur la patinoire au Centre Premier Tech pour un match en matinée contre les Gladiators de Newbridge Academy à midi HE.
