ONTARIO RED SECURES SPOT IN SEMIFINALS

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) scored twice and Annie Berg (Beamsville, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL), Saroya Tinker (Oshawa, Ont./Durham West, PWHL) and Julia Edgar (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) added a goal each to lead Ontario Red to a 5-1 win over Saskatchewan and clinch its spot in the semifinals of the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Agnew added an assist for a three-point night.

Serena D’Angelo (Stoney Creek, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) made 18 saves in her first start for Ontario Red.

Nara Elia (Saskatoon, Sask./Notre Dame, PWHL) had the lone goal for Saskatchewan.

Emma Johnson (Saskatoon, Sask./Saskatoon, SFMAAAHL) was solid in net for Saskatchewan, making 27 saves.

With the all-time head-to-head record coming in completely favouring Ontario Red – 6-0 – Saskatchewan had to be considered the underdog.

Nobody told the players that.

Midway through the opening period Elia was sprung on a breakaway and slid the puck low glove side.

But the game turned Ontario Red’s way in a span of 9:18 in the second period. 

At the eight-minute mark, Anonda Hoppner (Ottawa, Ont./Ottawa, PWHL) split the defence on a three-on-two; she lost the puck, but Berg, trailing the play, picked it up and roofed a backhand.

Three and a half minutes later, Tinker joined the rush and, after a two-on-one left the puck suspended in the air, the defenceman swatted it in the net before it could hit the ground.

After coming up empty on its first five power play opportunities, Ontario Red finally converted late in the second. Edgar’s floater from the point found its way through traffic to beat Johnson high.

After holding only a one-shot advantage through the opening 20, Ontario Red fired 19 pucks at Johnson in the second (compared to only the five sent D’Angelo’s way).

Ontario Red put the game out of reach with five minutes left in the third. Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) took a turnover in tight; she hit the post, but Agnew was there to put the rebound past an out-of-position Johnson.

Agnew added an empty netter with 36 seconds remaining.

Both teams wrap up the preliminary round on Friday: Saskatchewan is on the ice first, versus Quebec (10:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. PT), with Ontario Red taking on Manitoba in the nightcap (7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT).

ONTARIO ROUGE ASSURE SA PLACE EN DEMI-FINALE

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) a enfilé l’aiguille deux fois, Annie Berg (Beamsville, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL), Saroya Tinker (Oshawa, Ont./Durham West, PWHL) et Julia Edgar (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) ont marqué un but chacune, menant Ontario Rouge à un gain de 5-1 contre la Saskatchewan et confirmant sa place en demi-finale du Championnat national féminin des moins de 18 ans 2015.

Agnew a ajouté une aide à sa fiche pour une soirée de trois points.

Serena D’Angelo (Stoney Creek, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) a réalisé 18 arrêts à son premier départ devant la cage d’Ontario Rouge.

Nara Elia (Saskatoon, Sask./Notre Dame, PWHL) a obtenu le seul filet de la Saskatchewan.

Emma Johnson (Saskatoon, Sask./Saskatoon, SFMAAAHL) a été solide devant le filet de la Saskatchewan, avec 27 arrêts.

Ontario Rouge amorçant la partie avec un dossier de 6-0 dans l’histoire de ce tournoi face à la Saskatchewan, cette dernière devait être considérée comme étant la formation négligée.

Mais personne n’a informé les joueuses de cette statistique.

À mi-chemin au premier tiers, Elia  s’est retrouvée en échappée et a glissé la rondelle sous la mitaine de la gardienne de but.

Cependant, le match a tourné en la faveur d’Ontario Rouge en l’espace de 9 min 18 s au deuxième vingt.

À la huitième minute, Anonda Hoppner (Ottawa, Ont./Ottawa, PWHL) a fait séparer la défense adverse lors d’un 3 contre 2, a perdu la rondelle, mais Berg, traînant derrière, a saisi le disque et décoché un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure.

Trois minutes et demie plus tard, Tinker a appuyé l’attaque à 2 contre 1. La rondelle est restée suspendue dans les airs et la défenseure l’a frappée dans le filet avant qu’elle ne tombe sur la glace.

Après avoir échoué à ses cinq premières tentatives en avantage numérique, Ontario Rouge a finalement fait mouche à la fin de la période. La frappe d’Edgar de la pointe a fait son chemin dans la circulation pour battre Johnson dans le haut de son filet.

Après n’avoir dominé que par un tir de plus après les 20 premières minutes, Ontario Rouge a dirigé 19 rondelles vers Johnson en deuxième période (comparativement à seulement cinq vers D’Angelo).

Ontario Rouge a mis le match hors de la portée de la Saskatchewan avec cinq minutes à écouler. Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) a frappé le poteau à la suite d’un revirement, mais Agnew était bien positionnée pour pousser le retour derrière une Johnson hors position.

Agnew a compté dans un filet désert avec 36 secondes à écouler.

Les deux formations concluront leur ronde préliminaire vendredi : la Saskatchewan sautera d’abord sur la patinoire pour affronter le Québec (10 h 30 HE/7 h 30 HP), alors qu’Ontario Rouge sera opposée au Manitoba dans le dernier duel (19 h 30 HE/16 h 30 HP).
