WHITE HOLDS OFF RED TO OPEN U17 CAMP

ALLIE MOORE

CALGARY, Alta. - White opened the scoring in each period, and was able to withstand a third period onslaught by Red to win its first game 3-2 at Canada’s national under-17 development camp Saturday evening.

White’s Hayden Ostir (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Wild, MMAAAHL) scored the opening goal just over six minutes into the opening period, while teammate Matthew Struthers (Milton, Ont./Halton, OMHA) added a shorthanded goal in the second. Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Guelph, OMHA) made it a 3-0 game early in the third period before Red began to attempt a comeback.

Of his shorthanded goal, Struthers said, “[It was at the] end of the shift, I was pretty tired actually. Loose puck in the neutral zone, I was able to put it around the defenceman and luckily it went five hole.”

Red’s Brendan Semchuk (Kamloops, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) netted the first goal for his team, while Joël Teasdale (Beloeil, Que./College Antoine-Girouard, LHMAAAQ) added another goal on the power play. Several late attempts by other Red forwards were turned away by White netminder Aidan Hughes (London, Ont./London, MHAO).

“I think we played really well,” Struthers said. “We needed a quick start; by the third we were able to wear them out.”

Despite a flurry of scoring attempts late in the third period, Red was not able to get an equalizing goal.

“I think it showed a lot about us, a lot of character. We’re coming together as a team. They made it close, but I think we really bared down and got the win,” said Struthers.

Red’s Jordan Hollett (Langley, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) stopped 15 of 18 shots. In the White goal, Ian Scott (Calgary, Alta./Calgary Northstars, AMHL) turned aside all five shots he faced, while Hughes stopped 13 of the 15 shots Red fired on him.

LES BLANCS FREINENT LES ROUGES ET L’EMPORTENT EN LEVER DE RIDEAU DU CAMP DES M17

ALLIE MOORE

CALGARY, Alb.
