BITTEN SCORES SHORTHANDED WINNER IN OT; WHITE WINS GAME 1 AT U18 CAMP

WENDY GRAVES

CALGARY, Alta. – William Bitten (Gloucester, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) scored shorthanded 2:38 into overtime to lead White over Red 4-3 on Sunday night in the first of three intrasquad games at Canada’s National Men’s Summer-Under-18 Team selection camp.

With his team on the power play, Red goalie Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) left his net to push the puck ahead, but Bitten intercepted his pass near the blue-line and fired the game-winner into an open net.

White controlled play most of the game – holding a 31-19 advantage in shots – and appeared to be on its way to an opening-game victory after Brandon Saigeon (Grimsby, Ont./Hamilton, OHL) gave his team its first lead seven minutes into the final frame.

But with just over two to go in the third period, Ryely McKinstry (Calgary, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) one-timed a pass from Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) from the face-off circle for the late equalizer.

Despite being outplayed Red had built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. It took advantage of an early power play for the camp’s first goal. Samuel Girard’s (Roberval, Que./Shawinigan, QMJHL) initial shot was handled by netminder Stuart Skinner (Edmonton, Alta./Lethbridge, WHL), but Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) was waiting at the side of the net for the rebound.

Less than four minutes later Tye Felhaber (Pembroke, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) doubled the lead. Left alone in the low slot he had plenty of time to take Beck Malenstyn’s (Delta, B.C/Calgary, WHL) pass from the behind the net and fire it high to the glove side.

Despite being beat twice early Skinner, the second-youngest player at the camp, showed he wasn’t rattled, laying out to make two nice saves with five minutes to play in the opening period and another one with his team down a man barely a minute into the second.

White rewarded its goalie’s work just before the midway mark of the second period. Jake Bean (Calgary, Alta./Calgary, WHL) beat Evan Fitzpatrick (Lower Sackville, N.S./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) cleanly with a one-timer straight on from just inside the blue-line.

Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) scored the equalizer four minutes into the third, hammering a one-timer from the face-off dot with White enjoying a power play.

Skinner and Dylan Wells (St. Catharines, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) split time in net for the win.

BITTEN MARQUE EN DÉSAVANTAGE NUMÉRIQUE EN PROLONGATION ET LES BLANCS GAGNENT LE PREMIER DUEL AU CAMP DES M18

WENDY GRAVES

CALGARY, Alb.
