OFFENCE BREAKS OUT AS CANADA FINISHES PERFECT PRELIMS AT HLINKA CUP

JASON LA ROSE

BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) sparked the offence with a hat trick, and Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team capped an unblemished preliminary round with a 9-2 win over Switzerland on Wednesday at the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

The win officially clinches top spot in Group A for the Canadians, and sets up a semifinal showdown with Russia on Friday (time to be confirmed following the end of preliminary round play).

Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) was the top point-getter for Canada, scoring once and adding three assists; in total, 13 players got their names on the scoresheet, and six recorded multi-point performances.

Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) wasn’t busy in the Canadian goal, making 13 saves – including a third-period penalty shot – to post his second win in as many starts.

The Canadians struck early and often in the first period. Benson got it started at 5:41, cutting to the middle of the ice before beating Swiss netminder Philip Wüthrich on the backhand, and Jost buried his own rebound on a power play at 8:36 for a 2-0 lead.

Kale Clague (Lloydminster, Alta./Brandon, WHL) converted on another man advantage to make it 3-0 at 14:10, and set up Jost’s second goal with a picture-perfect slap-pass just 2:37 later.

Cyril Oehen got Switzerland on the board late in the opening period, and Nico Hischier made it a 4-2 game early in the second, but it would be all Canada after that.

Samuel Girard (Roberval, Que./Shawinigan, QMJHL) knocked in a rebound after Benson hit the post, and Jost took a cross-ice pass from Dillon Dubé and rifled home his hat trick goal to put the Canadians ahead 6-2 after 40 minutes.

Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL), Sam Steel (Sherwood Park, Alta./Regina, WHL) and Josh Mahura (St. Albert, Alta./Red Deer, WHL) all added goals in the final seven minutes to finish the scoring.

Hart didn’t need to make more than six saves in a period, and finished his performance by turning away Hischier on a penalty shot attempt with less than four minutes to go.

The Canadian power play awake from its tournament-long slumber, scoring twice on seven chances after going a combined 0-for-7 in the first two games.

Canada held a 49-15 advantage in shots on goals, and has outshot its opponents 127-52 in three games.
