MALTAIS GETS WINNER, WHITE BEATS IIHF AT U18 CAMP

ANDIE BURKE

CALGARY, Alta. – Emma Maltais had the winner on a second-period power play, leading White to its third win in as many tries at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, 2-1 over an IIHF development team on Friday night.

The IIHF team consists of players representing eight nations - Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, Norway, South Korea, and Switzerland – and is part of the IIHF Women’s High Performance Camp.

Canadian goaltenders Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, Que./Mortagne, QCJD1) and Édith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Laval, QCME), playing for the IIHF, combined to stop 42 shots and keep the international team in the game.

For the second night in a row, the Canadian and IIHF teams swapped goaltenders, with Emilie Kristiansen (NOR) tending the net for White.

Anonda Hoppner (Carp, Ont./Ottawa, PWHL) got the first goal of the game just shy of the 14-minute mark of the first period, taking advantage of a face-off win by Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, Man./St. Mary’s Academy, CAHS) and snapping a shot past Coulombe.

MALTAIS COMPTE LE BUT GAGNANT DANS UN GAIN DES BLANCS SUR L’IIHF AU CAMP DES M18

ANDIE BURKE

CALGARY, Alb.

But Jiyeon Choi (KOR) answered on an IIHF power play in the last minute of the opening frame, streaking down the left wing and beating Kristiansen over the glove from the top of the face-off circle.

White held a one-sided 21-6 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but the game went to the intermission tied 1-1 thanks to Coulombe.

The score stayed even until Maltais struck on the man advantage; with Choi off for high-sticking, Maltais redirected a shot from Olivia Knowles (Campbell River, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) through D’Astous-Moreau for the go-ahead goal.

The White defence made it stand up, holding the IIHF team to just one shot in the third period, despite spending eight minutes shorthanded in the final frame.

The final shot total registered 43-9 in favour of White; Coulombe stopped 27 of the 28 shots she faced through her 30 minutes of action, while D’Astous-Moreau turned aside 15 of 16.

Just one game remains; White will meet Red in the second and final intrasquad game on Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m. MT) to bring selection camp to an end.
