CANADA WHITE ERASES TWO-GOAL DEFICIT, BEATS CANADA BLACK AT U17S

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Gabe Vilardi (Kingston, Ont./Windsor, OHL) scored the winner late in the third period as Canada White came from behind to beat Canada Black 5-3 in the opening game both at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Sunday afternoon.

Vilardi parked himself in front of the net and redirected a Jarrod Gourley (Calgary, Alta./Prince Albert, WHL) point shot with just 3:56 left to give White the early advantage atop Group A.

White dominated play in the first, but it was Black that found the back of the net in the opening period. 

After a trio of early penalty kills, Black got the first goal of the game at 16:33 on a five-on-three power play.  Antoine Crete-Belzile (Quebec City, Que./Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) and David Levin (North York, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) set up Stelio Mattheos (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL), wasted no time on the 1-0 goal.

Just 58 seconds later, Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Halifax, QMJHL) drained a shot from the hashmarks to give Black a two-goal lead ahead of the second period.

White got on the board at 12:10 of the middle frame when James Hamblin (Edmonton, Alta./Medicine Hat, WHL) beat goaltender Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael’s, OJHL) from the point on the power play, with assists going to Nick Suzuki (London, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) and Owen Tippett.

It pulled even with just over a minute left in the second; Robert Thomas (Aurora, Ont./London, OHL) found Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alta./Spruce Grove, AJHL) in front, and the blue-liner snuck a shot over McGrath’s glove to send the game to the intermission even 2-2.

The White power play looked to strike early in the third period, but is was Black that took the lead when Alex-Olivier Voyer (Sherbrooke, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL) broke free and converted a shorthanded breakaway.

The lead would last only 57 seconds, though; Hamblin made a beautiful cross-ice pass in close to Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Ottawa, OHL), who reached out and tipped it past McGrath to tie the game 3-3 at 8:47.

Hamblin, the Canada White captain, found the empty net with 13 seconds left to cap the scoring.

White will try to make it two in a row on Monday when it takes on the United States (2:30 p.m. MT), while Black meets the Czech Republic in the second game of the day at the Encana Events Centre (7 p.m. MT).

DAWSON CREEK, C.-B. – Gabe Vilardi (Kingston, Ont./Windsor, OHL) a marqué le but gagnant vers la fin de la troisième période après que Canada Blancs eut comblé un déficit de deux buts pour battre Canada Noirs 5-3 lors du premier match des deux équipes au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015 dimanche après-midi.

Vilardi s’est posté devant le filet et a dévié un tir de la pointe de Jarrod Gourley (Calgary, Alb./Prince Albert, WHL) alors qu’il restait seulement 3 min 56 s à jouer pour permettre aux Blancs de se hisser au sommet du groupe A.

Les Blancs ont dominé le jeu en première période, mais ce sont les Noirs qui ont ouvert le pointage.

Après avoir résisté à trois avantages numériques en début de rencontre, les Noirs ont marqué le premier but du match à 16 min 33 s pendant une supériorité numérique à cinq contre trois. Antoine Crete-Belzile (Québec, Qc/Blainville-Boisbriand, LHJMQ) et David Levin (North York, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) ont préparé le jeu pour Stelio Mattheos (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) qui n’a pas tardé à porter la marque à 1-0.

Seulement 58 secondes plus tard, Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Qc/Halifax, LHJMQ) a décoché un puissant tir des lignes hachurées pour donner une avance de deux buts aux Noirs avant le deuxième tiers.  

Les Blancs ont réussi à marquer à 12 min 10 s de la période médiane lorsque James Hamblin (Edmonton, Alb./Medicine Hat, WHL) a déjoué le gardien de but Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael’s, OJHL) d’un tir de la pointe pendant une supériorité numérique avec l’aide de Nick Suzuki (London, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) et Owen Tippett.

Les Blancs ont ensuite créé l’égalité alors qu’il restait un peu plus d’une minute au chronomètre en deuxième;
Robert Thomas (Aurora, Ont./London, OHL) a repéré Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alb./Spruce Grove, AJHL) devant le filet et le défenseur a tiré la rondelle par-dessus la mitaine de McGrath, nivelant la marque à 2-2 après quarante minutes de jeu.

Alors que les Blancs profitaient d’un jeu de puissance tôt en troisième période, ce sont les Noirs qui ont pris les devants quand Alex-Olivier Voyer (Sherbrooke, Qc/Rimouski, LHJMQ) s’est échappé et a fait mouche en infériorité numérique.  

Mais l’avance n’a duré que 57 secondes; Hamblin a effectué une superbe passe transversale vers Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) près du but et celui-ci a allongé le bras et dévié la rondelle derrière McGrath pour niveler la marque à 3-3 à 8 min 47 s.

Hamblin, le capitaine de Canada Blancs, a marqué le dernier but de la partie dans un filet désert à 13 secondes de la fin.

Les Blancs tenteront de gagner un deuxième match de suite lundi lorsqu’ils affronteront les États-Unis (14 h 30 HR) tandis que les Noirs croiseront le fer avec la République tchèque dans le deuxième match de la journée au Encana Events Centre (19 h HR).
