HUGE FIRST PERIOD LEADS CANADA RED PAST SWEDEN AT U17S

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Antoine Morand (Mercier, Que..Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL) scored twice in a dominant first period as Canada Red topped Sweden 4-1 on Monday night in preliminary round action at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The win leaves the Canadians as the lone undefeated team in Group B; it can clinch first place with a win over Russia in Tuesday night’s preliminary round finale at North Peace Arena (7 p.m. MT).

Josh Brook (Roblin, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) and Joël Teasdale (Beloeil, Que./Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) did the rest of the scoring for Red, which jumped all over Sweden in the first period, outshooting the Scandinavians 18-2 and taking a 3-0 lead to the intermission.

Morand got it started at 6:56, wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Swedish goaltender Arvid Söderblom off the left wing, and Brook blasted a point shot through traffic and through Söderblom on a Canadian power play just over eight minutes later.

Red clicked again with the man advantage at 17:19, Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver, B.C./Lethbridge, WHL) spun in the slot and got his shot through, and Morand was there to bury the rebound for his second of the period.

Olle Eriksson Ek replaced Söderblom to start the second period and the Swedes came out firing, outshooting Red 11-9. But just as he did in Sunday’s tournament-opening win over Finland, netminder Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont,/Windsor, OHL) always had the answer, keeping the Swedish offence at bay.

Teasdale added to the lead with just 5.1 seconds left in the period; he tried to feed MacKenzie Entwistle (Georgetown, Ont./Hamilton, OHL) on a 2-on-0, but the puck bounced off a Swedish defenceman and past Eriksson Ek for a 4-0 advantage through 40 minutes.

The Swedes continued to press in the third period and finally beat DiPietro at the 7:33 mark, with Timothy Liljegren rifling a wrist shot over the Canadian goaltender’s blocker.

That would be it for the offence, though, and Red dropped Sweden to 0-2.

An all-Nordic match-up is the other game on the Tuesday schedule as Sweden meets Finland (2:30 p.m. MT).

FORT ST. JOHN, C.-B. – Antoine Morand (Mercier, Qc/Acadie-Bathurst, LHJMQ) a inscrit un doublé au cours d’un premier vingt dominé par Canada Rouges qui a pris la mesure de la Suède au compte de 4-1 lundi soir en ronde préliminaire du Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015.

Avec ce gain, Canada Rouges demeure la seule formation invaincue dans le groupe B; elle pourrait confirmer sa première place en battant la Russie mardi soir à l’occasion de son dernier match de la ronde préliminaire à l’aréna North Peace (19 h HR).

Josh Brook (Roblin, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) et Joël Teasdale (Beloeil, Qc/Blainville-Boisbriand, LHJMQ) ont également trouvé le fond du filet pour les Canadiens, qui ont complètement dominé la Suède au premier tiers, bombardant les Scandinaves avec 18 tirs contre 2, se donnant une avance de 3-0 avant le premier entracte.

Morand a cassé la glace à 6 min 56 s, décochant un tir des poignets par-dessus la mitaine du cerbère suédois Arvid Söderblom en provenance de l’aile gauche, puis Brook a tiré de la pointe dans la circulation pour battre Söderblom lors d’un jeu de puissance, seulement huit minutes plus tard.

Canada Rouges a encore fait mouche avec l’avantage d’un homme à 17 min 19 s; Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver, C.-B./Lethbridge, WHL) s’est amené dans la zone privilégiée pour tirer et voir Morand marquer sur son retour, son deuxième de la période.

Olle Eriksson Ek a remplacé Söderblom en début de deuxième période et les Suédois sont arrivés gonflés à bloc, dominant 11-9 quant aux tirs au but. Mais comme il l’a fait en lever de rideau du tournoi dimanche, dans une cause gagnante, le cerbère Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) a dit non à chaque reprise, ne laissant rien aux Suédois.

Teasdale a ajouté à l’avance des siens avec seulement 5,1 secondes à jouer dans la période; il a essayé d’alimenter MacKenzie Entwistle (Georgetown, Ont./Hamilton, OHL) lors d’un 2 contre 0, mais la rondelle a rebondi sur un défenseur de la Suède et derrière Eriksson Ek et c’était 4-0 Canada Rouges après 40 minutes. 

Les Suédois ont continué de mettre de la pression au troisième tiers et ont finalement trompé la vigilance de DiPietro à 7 min 33 s, alors que Timothy Liljegren a décoché un tir des poignets par-dessus le bloqueur du portier canadien.

Cependant, Canada Rouges n’a rien concédé ensuite, la Suède terminant le match avec une fiche de 0-2.

Un duel nordique sera aussi à l’horaire mardi, alors que la Suède a rendez-vous avec la Finlande (14 h 30 HR).
