TOLVANEN’S FOUR GOALS HELP FINNS TO PRELIM-ENDING WIN AT U17S

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Eeli Tolvanen was the story Tuesday afternoon, scoring four goals and adding an assist to lead Finland to a 6-3 win over Sweden in the preliminary round finale for both at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The Finns finished the round robin with a 2-1 record, and wait for the result of Tuesday night’s game between Canada Red and Russia to find out who, when and where they’ll play their quarter-final on Thursday.

Sweden went without a win in the preliminary round, and will face the United States on Thursday.

It took just over six minutes for Finland to strike first; a weak wrist shot from Henri Jokiharju found its way through Swedish netminder Olle Eriksson Ek for an early lead.

Miro Heiskanen used his helmet to keep the puck in at the Swedish blue-line before feeding Tolvanen, who ripped a one-timer past Eriksson Ek to double the Finnish advantage on the power play at 17:47.

Just 24 seconds into the second period, Tolvanen’s wrist shot came off Eriksson Ek and onto the stick of Joni Ikonen, who poked the rebound home, and Tolvanen added his second at 12:13, finding a loose puck in a scramble in front of the Swedish goal and making it 4-0.

The Swedes refused to go away, though, and found the back of the net twice in quick succession to get back in the game; Timothy Liljegren got Sweden on the board only nine seconds after Tolvanen’s goal, popping the water bottle over the short-side shoulder of Finnish netminder Lassi Lehtinen, and Lucas Elvenes redirected a Sebastian Walfridsson shot past Lehtinen just 99 seconds later to make it a two-goal game.

But Tolvanen would strike again in the final minute of the middle frame, hammering in a cross-crease feed on the power play to finish his hat trick and send the Finns to the intermission up 5-2.

Goal No. 4 came just 29 seconds into the third as Tolvanen capitalized on a turnover in the Swedish zone and beat Eriksson Ek, who was under fire all afternoon; the Swedish netminder faced 38 shots.

Rickard Hugg added a consolation goal in the final three minutes for the Swedes.

FORT ST. JOHN, C.-B. – Eeli Tolvanen a volé la vedette mardi après-midi, accumulant quatre buts et une aide pour mener la Finlande à une victoire de 6-3 sur la Suède lors du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire des deux équipes au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015.

Les Finlandais, qui terminent la ronde préliminaire avec une fiche de 2-1, devront attendre le résultat du match mardi soir entre Canada Rouges et la Russie pour connaître contre qui et quand ils joueront en quart de finale jeudi.
 
La Suède, qui n’a remporté aucun match en ronde préliminaire, affrontera les États-Unis, jeudi.

Il aura fallu un peu plus de six minutes à la Finlande pour ouvrir la marque. Un faible tir du poignet d’Henri Jokiharju a déjoué le gardien de but suédois Olle Eriksson Ek.  

Miro Heiskanen a utilisé son casque pour garder la rondelle en jeu à la ligne bleue suédoise avant de la remettre à Tolvanen qui a décoché un puissant tir sur réception pour battre Eriksson Ek et doubler l’avance de la Finlande pendant une supériorité numérique à 17 min 47 s.

Après seulement 24 secondes de jeu au deuxième tiers, le tir du poignet de Tolvanen a bondi sur Eriksson Ek pour se retrouver sur la lame du bâton de Joni Ikonen qui a fait mouche en s’emparant du rebond. Tolvanen a ensuite réussi son deuxième du match à 12 min 13 s après avoir récupéré une rondelle libre lors d’une mêlée devant le filet suédois pour creuser l’écart à 4-0.

Mais les Suédois ont refusé de baisser les bras. Ils ont marqué deux buts rapprochés pour revenir dans le match; Timothy Liljegren a réussi le premier but de la Suède seulement neuf secondes après le but de Tolvanen lorsqu’il a fait sauter la bouteille d’eau du gardien de but finlandais à l’aide d’un tir par-dessus son épaule. Seulement 99 secondes plus tard, Licas Elvenes a dévié un tir de Sebastian Walfridsson derrière Lehtinen pour réduire l’écart à deux buts.

Mais Tolvanen allait de nouveau faire vibrer les cordages au cours de la dernière minute de jeu en deuxième période, captant une passe transversale pendant un avantage numérique pour compléter son tour du chapeau et porter l’avance des Finlandais à 5-2 après 40 minutes de jeu.

Le quatrième but de Tolvanen est survenu après seulement 29 secondes en troisième période lorsqu’il a profité d’un revirement en zone suédoise et trompé la vigilance d’Erikkson Ek qui a été bombardé tout l’après-midi, faisant face à 38 tirs.  

Le Suédois Rickard Hugg a ensuite inscrit un but de consolation à moins de trois minutes de la fin.
